IGN's Ys VI Playtest (PS2/PSP)

so do I have a better chance of winning the powerball than this coming out in English?

I liked Ys VI a lot. Only bad thing I can say about the game is that it was short and that I definitely needed to use a gamepad for the platforming elements in the game. The second part shouldn't be a problem since its the console version (in fact I think I used a PS2 controller to play the game) but I hope they add a couple more secret dungeons into the mix. The eye candy, while not up to par with the current powerhouse games, is made up with some really good art (that is if you like Japan anime type characters). The boss fights are probably the best thing about the game and its cool that they are gonna add an option to do just the boss battles.

Edit -
Kinda off-topic question: Are they ever gonna localize Ys Books 1 and 2 Eternal?

I really enjoyed it too. I and my friend both played it using the xbox controller, but the dash/slash/jump was very hard to do. I had to use the keyboard to pull it off.

Great game tho. Was very nostalgic too, since I've been playing Ys since the SMS. :)

Heard that NEC Interchannel US was gonna release Ys Book 1 and 2 in the US but got rejected by SCEA :( Then the company went under, after releasing like only one game (Culdecept)

I've played through the Ys 6 demo and absolutely loved it. I've been waiting for a new Ys game to hit the states for YEARS. I'm not a huge fan of some of the changes Konami's made though. :(

I'm curious if the PSP and PS2 versions will be the same or not.

what changes did they make?

They did the forgettable Tube Sliders, too. Don't count NEC out, though. They've been in and out of the market a number of times in the USA. One of these times they'll stick around.

Changed the in-gameplay visuals of the characters. Got rid of the classic Ys chibi look. -_-

They didn't simply change the way they looked, they moved away from the sprites in the PC version and used actual polygons for all characters. I don't like the change much either...

Also, I was used to playing it at 60 fps on my PC...but the PS2 version is only 30. :( It felt so smooth before...

The demo was pretty awesome. I dont know wether I should get it on PS2 or wait for the PSP version, the game seems perfectly suited for PSP handheld gaming.

Yeah, I know. Disappointing, on all counts. However, aren't they supposed to be adding new content and music? That might be good...

If that's the case, I'd love to play it again. As noted, the game was kinda short...but it controlled wonderfully and was a blast to play.

I'm not sure myself either, both games look really beautiful to me. I don't know a thing about the Ys series though, are the stories linked at all? If not, I think I'd be inclined to pick up the PSP version, it seems like a nice addition to the handheld scene, especially if it looks just as good.

The game was really fun to play. The jumping animation was wonky as shit, and killing these purple squirrel like things, watching them explode into puddles of blood and flying body parts, then stepping on that blood and trailing bloody footprints, were all a little um... jarring, for a long time Ys fan, but it just felt so fun!

I miss the old 8-bit chime signifying the level up, but the treasure-acquired music was a whole lot of nostalgia!

This is technically Ys 6, and America stopped getting the games at 3 (officially.) That's why the number is being dropped for US release. I know this game involves, somehow, the Romun Empire (which was also featured in Ys 4.) I only know this because of the Ys 6 soundtrack.

Edit - I do miss the whole bumping into enemies combat mechanic, but I do like the way they handle the weapons here, varying up the gameplay a bit. And, of course, I know that Ys 3 and 5 (though not 4, strangely enough) had done away with that archaic bit of gameplay anyway.

ys IV -- the PC engine version, anyway -- shits on ys III and V. mostly because of atmosphere, yeah, not because of gameplay. i really need to replay it... now that magic engine supports CD audio under XP i should really consider doing so.

the SFC version of ys IV, which is a totally different game (has the same or at least similar scenario, though) IMO is nothing special, though.

Agreed. I played through a fan translation of SNES Ys IV, from beginning to end, and it left me a bit cold.

I imported a copy of Ys IV PC Engine from Japan (to rip its music, really), and fiddled with it for a bit, and it felt more "right." Ys III was fun, I liked it almost as much as Zelda II. Ys V I barely played, and don't have much of an opinion on it. It's probably the most relevant to Ys VI, since it also featured a top-down view with weapon-swinging and jumping.

It's a bit fuzzy in my head, but isn't Ys 4 where the story diverged and there were two licenses given for the same chapter? The PC-Engine one was Dawn of Ys, and the SNES one was Mask of the Sun, if I remember right. The PCE version was the "true" chapter 4, from what I heard at the time, and the SNES "Mask" one was a money grab. At the time I played the PC-Engine version I remember the only disappointment I had was that true animation sequences were mostly missing. It was lots of panning stills for the "movies", and that was a bit of a disappointment.

I am surprised Konami dropped the number from the upcoming release, though.

You got that right, only I heard that the SNES Mask of the Sun was the true Ys IV. Supposedly. It's all really confusing. I mean, I'm pretty sure both take place at the same time, either 2 years before Ys I & II, or 2 years after... I forget which exactly. And both feature some of the same story characters and scenarios, though they are, ultimately, significantly different games.

the SFC version was the version that was included with the preorder bonus disc for ys vi in japan, but i have a feeling that had to do with the fact it could be easily included and emulated as anything. if falcom says it's the "official" version then they're stupid -- it's a mediocre game at best, whereas the PCE ys IV is the best game in the series, IMO.

Actually after looking at the PSP version, that video/trailer thing. I'm gonna have to go with the PS2 version. It looks like they scaled down on things quite a bit to fit it all in, including the graphics somewhat. And the PS2 version just look plain spectacular to me.

Though, my question didn't quite get answered and I couldn't quite get it out of the follow posts. But are the Ys stories related at all? Mainly, would it be safe to start with this one?

They're mostly related, but aside from the first 2, work very well as stand alone games as well.

I don't know what the "official" line is, but I heard the bit about the PC-Engine version of Ys IV being the "real" version and the SNES one being a money grab around the time we were doing Popful Mail debugging in Japan (yes, we used to travel to Japan for final debug before we did conversions in-house). It's been a while, but the person who told me was in a position to know those things. Having played both, I completely believe it.

Hell, even if it weren't true, I'd rather say it was. IIRC, I read otherwise in a rather obscure interview (possibly not legit, in hindsight) at one of the 'classic' Ys fansites that no longer exists today.

Oh good, thanks. :) Maybe I'll have to backtrack on the older ones too if I've got the chance. This new game really caught my eye though. I do think I remember seeing shots of one of the other games and it was really cute. I might be mistaken though.

Interesting. Only Ys game i ever played was Ys 3 on the SNES. I thought it was pretty cool and beat it twice actually, but I understand that that game was actually a bit of a temporary change for the Ys series (side scrolling rather than the traditional top down perspective).

looking forward to this one.

I own 1-4 on the Turbo... haven't really played 4 yet, cuz I'm waiting for this (been refreshing this page every day). 1 and 2 kicked ass, though 3 was annoying (the scrolling made me nauseous)... 4 looks great, but I'm gonna try playing the English SFC translation first, even though I hear it's not that great.

I played a tiny bit of 5, but it just didn't feel right to me... graphics were nice, but they looked too muted, a far cry from the bright primary colors used in the Turbo Ys games...
