Salads produced by Taylor Farms de Mexico and sold at U.S. restaurants appear to be the source of the cyclospora outbreak that has sickened hundreds in at least two states, Iowa and Nebraska, federal officials confirmed Friday night.

The Food and Drug Administration said an investigation revealed illness clusters at four restaurants that were traced to a common supplier, Taylor Farms de Mexico. "As a result of the current investigation FDA is increasing its surveillance efforts on green leafy products exported to the U.S. from Mexico," the FDA said in a statement.
The FDA told CBS News the restaurants include Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants in Iowa and Nebraska. Those two chains are owned by Darden Restaurants.

Darden issued a statement saying, "Nothing we have seen prior to this announcement gave us any reason to be concerned about the products we've received from this supplier. Iowa and Nebraska health authorities have said this is not an ongoing outbreak and the product is no longer in the food supply in those states. The health and safety of our guests is our top priority, and it is completely safe to eat in our restaurants."

A statement from Taylor Farms said, "The Mexico facility is state of the art and has an exceptional food safety record including an exceptional facility audit in 2011 by the FDA. The company is also working with the FDA on an environmental facility assessment of Taylor Farms de Mexico and is cooperating with the FDA in their ongoing investigation."

Yum, Olive Garden has all you can eat parasite salad.

More states than just Iowa and Nebraska MAY be affected. The FDA isn't sure yet.

Just warning people that have eaten at either chain recently.

Not surprised at all. My hatred of the Olive Garden has been well-documented.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Great, so where am I supposed to go now for authentic Italian cuisine?

See, this is the issue. If someone asked this dude "Is it safe to eat at your restaurants?" the day before this happened, he'd have said "The health and safety of our guests is our top priority, and it is completely safe to eat in our restaurants." -- now this happens, and he says "Well, that sucks, nothing we could have done. The health and safety of our guests is our top priority, and it is completely safe to eat in our restaurants."

Olive Garden: If we're not actively killing people right now, come on in!

Sea food differently lol. Worked at two Red Lobster kitchens, and at the very least its cleaner than, say, Applebees whose kitchen I also worked in. But outbreaks like this are not tied to sanitation, especially when its already been shipped to the restaurants.

Don't support those shitty chains.

It's funny you have a lot poster here complain about medium rare steaks and illness, though they never back up their claims with empirical data, yet you always here about that with salad greens. Hmm.

yea, but what exactly are they supposed to do? If they get supplied food, how are they supposed to test it for all kinds of shit?

The outbreak actually happened months ago and all offending greens been removed from circulation. I'm actually surprised at the late reporting on this.

People will be fine if they eat now and is no fault of any food chain, tbh.

A month ago my wife and I both got this. Lots of documented cases in Texas this year. Awful fucking feeling. But we didn't eat at olive garden or any of the other chains mentioned.

This is the first time I've ever heard someone ask "What are restaurants supposed to do? It's not their fault they're poisoning people."

I'm not saying the restaurant is without blame, especially if they continued to serve the food after they found out. But again, i'm asking what specifically are they supposed to do? Are they supposed to have official taste testers for all food and wait for them to keel over?

If I go to the grocery store and buy tainted meat and i'm patient 0, how is the store supposed to know?

I think there is some testing done, but I don't know. It seems like whenever you hear about these massive recalls its almost always because multiple got sick, or the animals that were recently with the dead ones got sick and or died.

The restaurant receives the salad mix from the supplier. They refrigerate and maintain a strong level of hygiene. They serve the salad. Everyone blames the restaurant instead of the supplier. Had this been some trendy, hipster ridden food establishment people would be bending over backward to defend them.

What's with the Olive Garden hate? Love me their salad and breadsticks
Because, quite frankly, the salad and breadsticks are literally the only things people ever mention liking them for, ignoring the fact that anything else on their menu is decidedly average at best and not even close to being "authentic Italian" cuisine.

I only eat "authentic" spaghetti and meatballs.

Exactly. If the safety checks fail at the farm level, and the chains do everything they need to do, then how is the restaurant at fault?

I agree with this and the folks who say the cheese biscuits at Red Lobster are worth it regardless off trouble. I'd say they're only really at fault fit being cheap in their salad by getting it from Mexico (water supply with slightly lower health standards). My family and I have always enjoyed eating there. I only remember going to an Olive Garden once and never really caring for it. I'm lucky to have an OUTSTANDING local family-based Italian place in my area.

What if it's really good spaghetti and meatballs? I don't see why that is inherently a "childish" meal.
I'm sure there are restaurants that are known for having really good spaghetti and meatballs (mostly due to the meatball recipe), but I can confidently say the Olive Garden is not one of those places.

I used to work at a place that ha about 11-14 people all get sick from the same thing. I was told it was the lettuce but by then the whole town had already formed a opoinin that are food was bad and we was closed up by the next year. Shit sucks too for something that was are suppliers fault but couldnt prove.

Well they were right, regardless if them getting sick from the food was Olive Garden's fault or not.

MOTHERFUCKER. I ate there last week because my parents wanted to bring me lunch while I was at work. I never go there on my own but was weak and hungry so I had them bring me a salad because it was healthier!!!

Jokes on me. I have diarrhea like every two weeks so that hardly counts but the muscle aches and loss of appetite seem like I could have it. Welp, so long guys, I had a good run. Thanks for all the laughs, GAF.
