I've decided I better get on the PSP bandwagon.
It's too cool to pass up.

1) Will I still be able to find one? There are a lot of stores here that "sell" video games but there are always in full stock of everything.

2) I'm getting 2 games with it. Which should they be? I'm leaning towards a racer and lumines, but I just don't know.

Thanks, GAF!
I can't wait to hook up a hotspot so I can play online!

Hit Wal-Mart or Target, they should have some in stock. As far as games, I would say Lumines and Ridge Racers would be great choices. Though I am finally starting to get into Untold Legends.

specialty stores are sold out in my area...not sure about where you live but try stores like Walmart
Lumines is ace, you'll love it
I'd have to try out Ridge Racer before I can recommend a racer, but Wipeout is great...though I guess your mileage will vary depending on how much you like the PSX wipeout game's gameplay

There are some bargains to be had on ebay, if you're that way inclined.

I finally settled on Wipeout and Lumines, after much deliberation. You can surf the web with wipeout! :P ;)

Be careful, though - the PSP is just the entry price. I found myself buying a crapload of stuff to go a long with it. Games, of course, but moreover a 512MB stick, a screen protector (a must), a case (also a must if you put your stuff in a bag)..it all adds up :lol

1) Yes. Like others said, Wal-Mart is loaded with them. The cashier probably won't know what you're talking about.

2) If you want a racer, then go with Wipeout. I prefer its fast-paced action to Ridge Racer, but the latter is also a good choice if you prefer a more 'realistic' racer. And, yes. Go with Lumines as well. And Darkstalkers if you're into that.

Oli, your girlfriend's father is going to kill you when he sees that thread at the OA. ;)

Anyway, buy Darkstalkers and Lumines.

I thought Ridge Racers was arcadey... hmmm...
Do either have online play? Which has more courses/vehicles? Which has the better single player game?

What thread?

the only games that have online at the moment are some of the crappy 989 sports games and Twisted Metal (which is, unlike the sports games, good).

Yeah, but apparently you can't really get online with Twisted Metal at the moment. I was going to pick it up instead of Lumines, but I'm holding off on it till they sort out the online troubles.

Neither RR or Wipeout is online, but wipeout will have downloadable content every month, and also has that browser hack. I'm not sure how their single player modes compare...I don't think either disappoints from that POV.

You shouldn't have any problems finding a PSP at Target, Walmart, Kmart, etc. Those stores in my area had plenty of them in stock.

As for games, it's tough to say. The game I've played the most is Untold Legends, but I'm also loving WipeOut Pure and Lumines. One of these days I'll get around to playing Twisted Meta (if they fix online play) and NFL Street. :D

Try Circuit City. The two in my area never put out the PSP (kept them all in back by CS). The one problem is that at it was bundled with Twisted Metal. This was last week so it could be different now.

The 2 year warrantee is an extra $40, it is a Sony product after all. Oh and at least at the CC I went too they did not mind if I checked it for dead pixels before I left.

I'd go with RidgeRacer and Lumines, they are the most fun IMO.

Hit walmart for Lumines, fucking store was loaded with them yesterday.

Wipeout is fun too, just a shade less fun than RR.

Get Wipeout Pure and Lumines. I've been playing Lumines for 5 days straight and it's fun and addictive. If you liked Tetris and Columns you'll love Lumines.

I also have Darkstalkers but I wouldn't reccomend it unless you're a huge fighting game fan.

I don't know about where you live, but you can't walk 20 feet without bumping into a stand full of PSPs in my area, so I don't anticipate that you'll have a problem finding one. As for which games to get, I got Wipeout Pure and Tony Hawk Underground 2. Wipeout is great, and Tony Hawk is cool too once you get past literally 4 minutes of load screens before you even grind your first rail. The load times on this game are RIDICULOUS. In fact, they are bothersome enough to the point that I wouldn't buy it had I known they were in there. Regardless of the gameplay. If you don't mind the load times, it's a fun game, but it doesn't control nearly as well as the console counterparts. It's awkward holding the PSP so you can use the d-pad, 4 face buttons, and both shoulder buttons. In short, I don't really recommend Tony Hawk.

As others have pointed out, keep in mind that 250 bucks gets you in the door. You're really looking at more than 400 bucks for a couple of games, a case, and a decent memory stick. So just make sure you got the cash available.

If you don't like load times stay away from Ape Escape, takes like 5 mins to get into a lvl because of all the load times.

Still the AAA titles like WipeOut, Lumines and Ridge Racer don't suffer absurd load times.

One more thing...
Do I need to fully charge the battery before turning it on for the first time?
And is putting mp3s on it easy?

I don't know if it has been said yet, but if you want to go online only the 989 sports titles and TM can go online.. other games you need a PC with WiFi card and XLink software to take the games online, and they don't run all that well once you do.

To put MP3's on it all you do is hook it up to your PC with the USB cable, click on the new drive that appears, create a directory called PSP, then a directory called MUSIC. All of your MP3's have to go inside of this directory. Also (and I wish the documentation didn't suck balls) if you want to use playlists you HAVE TO create subdirectories inside of music, stick MP3's in those subdirectories and include the m3u files in there. The PSP won't read m3u files directly in the MUSIC directory it seems. Also you can't make subdirectories of subdirectories in music..

but aside from all of that yeah, it is rpetty straightforward... just drop files into MUSIC from your desktop or subdirectories directly inside of MUSIC.

and is it me or was Sony just fucking dumb for not automatically creating the Movie and Music directory structures with the format option. Seriously... hmm.. if someone wants to put music and movies on their PSP, let's force them to have to make the directories themselves, nevermind that every PSP in existence is going to be using the same structure layout.

you won't like any of the games. except perhaps lumines. which your pretensions won't permit you to dislike.

You should fully charge it before you play any games but you can turn it on and test the screen before charging. The batt is partially charged out of the box.

ive seen many a psp at wall mart and target. meijer as well had quite a few units
games in order as follows
lumines
ridge racer
twisted metal
darkstalkers
thug 2
tiger woods
wipeout

My battery was half charged when I opened it, but I did not use the battery until I had charged it fully the first time. You should probably just plug it in when you first play with it. When it is finished charging, then you can do as you please.

Putting MP3s and pictures on the thing is VERY easy. On the memory stick, there should be a folder called "PSP". Within that folder, simply make two folders. I can't remember the names for certain, but I believe they were simply "MUSIC" and "PHOTO". If not, the names are in the manual. Regardless, once you have the proper folders created, you can just drag and drop any MP3s or pictures in there and view them from the main menu. Movies a bit different, but you can find instructions for that at www.connect.com/psp.

Ridge Racers might be a better option than Wipeout, though. There is more content, it runs at 60 fps, and is just a blast to play. Wipeout is a bit more difficult to get into initially (and the early classes are very slow) and the framerate is a bit uneven. Ridge Racer is much more difficult to find, though. If you see it, I'd go ahead and grab that. Still, it's up to you.

How much like Wipeout 64 is Wipeout PSP?
WO64 was slow and floaty and not a lot of fun. When I considered WoPSP I had thoughts of GX in my head.

From the response of numerous people I got the feeling that if your expecting something like GX it's better not to get Wipeout.

I've never played Wipeout 64, so I couldn't tell you. WO has never been like F-Zero, however. There is a reason why so many people have divided opinions between the two series. Pure becomes extremely fast as you progress, but starts out slow. It is also a bit floaty (on purpose). Fusion was the least floaty of all, and a lot of people complained about that.

Ridge Racer plays like, well, Ridge Racer. The handling is most similar to Ridge Racer V (maybe even better) and the game is fast as well. I don't know if you are into Ridge Racer or not, but the game is a blast. The game is also very polished.

Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R' Us, or Costco should definitely have PSP models, just ask around. Best Buy or Circuit City may still have stock depending on where you live. EB/Gamestop are probably sold out.

As for the two titles, I'd personally reccomend Ridge Racer and Lumines or Dark Stalkers.

If you don't like the "floaty" feel of WipeOut definitely go with Ridge Racer.

Oli, would you accept games in trade for nude pictures of your girlfriend? How about Untold Legends for a cropped pic of her left boob?

When you're selling your PSP in a few months, can you post about it here before considering eBay or another option? I think in that much time I'd like to have a second just for fucks sakes

Getting a PSP, eh? That's nice.

Needing help? Well, that's just not news. You're blowing the $250 on a PSP, you could have had a couple visits to the shrink for that kind of money.

Damn, I really would have liked to see the thread where Oli tries to sell pictures of his girlfriend and then lament and 'learn his lesson' by Page 12.

Much like his mocking "Demento Screenshots" threads, I smell massive BS all over this thread (naked photos selling included).

Smarty man Olimario outsmarts teh GAF + OA to get them back for years of making fun of him!!1

foobar, check your PMs

edit: Marconelly, I'd rather he be fooling both forums than actually selling nude pics of his ex-gf to buy a psp =\

My Target and Costco didn't have any PSP units at all. :(

Well, you can see such a thread at OA...minus the 12 pages and "learn his lesson" part that is.

Apparently, m0rphix really has more money than he knows what to do with...

I remember back then when he was posting here, he said his mother got something like several millions of dollars out of the lawsuit case with her company, as the work conditions made her very ill.

I told him to immediatelly put that money in a Switzerland bank thus giving himself and all his future generations a financial security, and ability to live off the interest, instead of blowing money on yachts and other such stupidities. No idea if he did that, as he was banned shortly after.

Oli, I thought you were a good Christian?

WHAT WOULD JESUS SAY ABOUT THIS?!

That would be my advice, but considering he dropped like a grand and a half on PSP's launch and just pent $350 for naked pix of Oli's gf I seriously doubt he did anything smart with the money. Dumbfucks allways get the $$$.

Oli, you posted a pic of your cock and naked GF for a PSP?? You that desperate?
He's too fucking lazy to get a job and actually earn his stuff.

I don't know anyone here any more. If I wasn't banned for over a year all my giveaways might have been done here. I done for now anyways, look for me again when the new Xbox hits.

<--- morphix

I still post here but OA is my home. Yes I am loaded.
Welcome back! Btw, there's tons of old crew here, but most people just keep changing usernames.

Maybe he left some spending cash aside ;)

Also, I don't really believe the naked pics story.

Good, well then I retract my previous statement...sorta. But spending $350 for naked pix of Oli's gf? WHY? There's plenty of porn out there if you're so inclined.

Power rush, being able to just convince someone to send him naked pics of his or her gf for a little dough.

And I must say, I can't think of anything more pathetic than what oli did, except doing it without his gf's permission. :lol

my PSP, from the morphix photoshop contest, should be coming this week! I can't wait. :D :D :D

Who's up for some twisted metal? :)

The mere concept of all this is just flat out depressing, regardless of authenticity. Not just simple depressing, but like, disappointed in humanity depressing.
