So I'm going back and I'm buying up some of the older consoles that I never had as a kid and I'm building up sort of a collection of essential games from those consoles.
I started doing that in 2012, after I had an overdose of disappointing AAA sequels in 2011 (Gears 3, Dead Space 2, Crysis 2, Modern warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Arkham City, Witcher 2). That's when I realised in which direction the industry was heading, and that 3d platformers, survival horrors, aerial shooters, jet ski, snowboard, futuristic racers, among others, are never coming back.
So I went out and bought all the consoles and games I always wanted as a kid, and keep periodically adding some widely acclaimed ones that I missed (damn you internet forums), though I'm trying to stop because the backlog is becoming ridiculous, and I never had a backlog before, when I was just a current gen gamer.
So far I have amassed: (owned Gamecube and X360 at release, and was a PC gamer in the 90s)
N64 : 13 games
Dreamcast : 6 games
PS2 : 13 games
XBOX : 14 games
PC : 19 games
still 43 that I haven't started....
I like to keep a check on myself and rationalize the whole thing, so I stick to a few rules, like always buying with the intention to play at some point, not buying games from genres I dislike even though they got amazing reviews, and also not going for stuff older than when I actively became interested in video games (1996), and since I like 3d games only and dislike 2d gameplay, I'm not really missing out anyway.
