While I was in Sri Lanka this Xmas and there wasn't much to do I started reading a book my brother picked up for the trip (he reads a fair bit). Now, I never read in my spare time, but since I had nearly nothing to do, I gave in :p

The book was "Layer Cake", and it was about drug dealing and all that in the UK. Needless to say, it was quite good though sometimes got a little confusing with the lingo and overwhelmed me a little bit with so many characters. Still, books suddenly got a lot cooler.

After that, on the flights back I started reading "The Da Vinci Code", and yeah I think it's overrated (this guy writes like an 8th grader), but it's so basic and *interesting*, so it makes for a very easy, satisfying read (especially the short chapters).

I'm scared guys, I like books! :S

P.S.: "Aliterate" is a term used to classify someone who can read, but chooses not to so much. I'm not illiterate or anything ^_^

Read Ender's Game. It's the book that got me into reading, I was hooked after that...also read Musashi (if you can stomach 1000pgs).

Funny, the book did the same for me. I fucking hated reading, and my uncle gave me this for my birthday one year. I didn't end up reading it for a year until I needed something for a book report.

Good lord, did that book pull me in. I love it. I highly suggest it to everyone.

An even funnier thing about that book is, now the Ender series are the only books I can read.

i remember starting to read it late one night and i kept reading till I passed out from lack of sleep. I got up the next morning and continued reading until I finished it. After that I finally went to the bathroom and ate something. Never has a book pulled me in as much as this, even to this day (5 years later). Musashi came close, but that's due to my love for samurai's and japanese history.

GOD, I hate Ender's Game. Though I liked it at the time, if 5% as much as other people seem to go batshit insane over it.

Card's misogynistic racist theocratic asshole personal life sure has soured me on the man's books, tho.

You may have a hard time finding them (some are out of print) but books by John Cowper Powys rock.

Yay for books :D Honestly these things are good time killers while you're waiting for the next RE4 to hit. And there's just so many of them, and so many seem to be better than your average video game.

Books are better because they're more mature, realistic and gritty.

That certainly doesn't come through in Ender's Game.

Eh, I don't know much of the Mormon religion.

I read through every book in the series, and I just came away liking the whole idea behind them.

From what I understand though, some of his other series are much more Mormon-ized.

I tend to suffer from aliteracy as well. Have all my life. I just have a hard time focusing on reading something longer than a few pages, and I eventually feel as though I should be doing something that involves more than sitting motionless by myself while staring at a piece of paper in my hand for hours on end. I suck.

You're the first I've seen anywhere who likes him, other than myself :) I've never seen anything quite like his language - it's stunningly beautiful. I wouldn't recommend him to someone who's just started reading, though, since his books are both very dense with literary references and pretty long.

Did you try "The Da Vinci Code", or even Harry Potter (I've only read the first one for a book report). They're both super easy to get into, you'll surprise yourself.
