It's weird, a friend of mine has a role in this as one of the Dylans. When he told me who he was playing, I was like WTF that's amazing. Apparantly there's far more Bob Dylans than just those headliner names.

Oh, I thought it was just Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan.

Still.......weird. I have no idea what this movie is.

wow horrible...not one of them even comes close to looking like him. The Blanchett one especially, you can tell its her.

It's about Bob Dylan at all the different stages in his life/career. That's why there are a bunch of different actors playing him.

It's Todd Haynes, so I'll be there, even though it'll hurt to support The Weinstein Company.

The supporting cast is filled with some great names too. Julianne Moore, David Cross, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Michelle Williams, Bruce Greenwood, etc.

Any word yet on whether David Cross will be reprising his role of Tobias the nevernude?

Christian Bale's not even IN this movie!!!

"Ta-da..."

In my opinion, Blanchett looks more like him than anyone else. But obviously they aren't always going for someone that looks like him (see black kid).

Admittedly, I got goosebumps watching the trailer, but maybe that's because I love Bob so much. It was cool seeing various well known scenes from his career (like the one of Bale-Dylan playing on the farm).

There's a clip floating around of him in this movie. It's unclear if he's wearing cutoffs underneath his pants.

I remember hearing Scrubs wanted to get David Cross as Tobias on their show for an episode. That's the only hope to see that character again.

Blanchett could dress like a ballerina and she'd still make you believe.

There's a 2 min clip of Blanchett/Cross on youtube, I can't paste the link atm though. She does a great job of capturing that mid 60's Dylan spacey/spazziness that he had in videos I've seen of him. Brilliant.

I'm assuming at least some level of Dylan adoration is required, because frankly, I don't get it.

I could explain it, but Wikipedia does it so damned well:
The film is said to tell its story using rather non-traditional techniques, much like the poetic narrative style utilized in Dylan's songwriting. "The film is going be inspired by Dylan's music and his ability to re-create and re-imagine himself time and time again," according to key producer, Christine Vachon. Some of Dylan's actual music will be used, such as his "Ballad of a Thin Man".

The title I'm Not There is a reference to the Dylan outtake recorded during The Basement Tapes (Sessions). It was not included in the studio album The Basement Tapes and can only be found on the CD bootleg set The Genuine Basement Tapes and the later remastered version (still considered a bootleg) of that set A Tree With Roots. I'm Not There is one of the most famous and highly regarded outtakes, not just of the Basement Tapes, but Dylan’s whole career. It has never been officially released, though it is slated to appear on the film’s soundtrack.

Plus, I'm pretty sure this was the only concept that Dylan himself was intrigued by. He approved of it.

Hmm....this actually looks really interesting. And it's directed by Payne. I'm intrigued
... no it's not. It's directed by Todd Haynes.

After Safe, I'll see pretty much anything Haynes does (though Far From Heaven didn't really work for me), and the cast is fantastic. I doubt I'll be able to see this in a theater, though -- it's only opening in 4 theaters initially, and it's way too artsy to get anything resembling a wide release.

If they're going with the idea of different actors, including a black kid and a woman, personifying the ideas behind Bob Dylan's soul, you can be pretty sure they're not aiming for a one-to-one physical representation of the man himself.

This sounds like an amazing film. Also Christian Bale is hot.

I thought the trailer looked awesome. How many stabs is that cinema has taken at trying to do Bob Dylan correctly now? I don't know much about the guy outside his music, but apparently he's destined to be made a great movie of.

Well, so far, the only really worthwhile Bob Dylan flicks are documentary-biography pieces. The msot notable (and best one) is No Direction Home, directed by Scorsese. It aired on PBS like a year and a half ago. Really good shit. But in terms of a stab at full fledged biography like Ray or Walk the Line, nothing really has come up. Until this, however. Like I said, I'm pretty sure this concept of different actors portraying different time periods in his life was the only idea that Dylan himself was into.

Bob Dylan is boring.

You shut your mouth. Watch the trailer again, it's omg.

Wow ... this is a pretty interesting (and refreshing) concept. I think I could get into this.

The weird thing, from watching the trailer ... Cate Blanchett actually seems to be the one who really nails it 0_o

Classifying Dylan as simply a celebrity is just ... wow.

I went to a Bob Dylan concernt man. He basically told us all to get fucked by not playing any of his songs and celebrating his born again status by singing hymns. I know he's written some grand songs. But yeah, it is what it is.

Saw the film in Venice - it's very good. Cate Blanchette deserves her 2nd Oscar for her role here. But be warned - the film is NOT narrative, instead it's fragmentalized and impressionalistic. So if you expect a biopic you'll be sorely disappointed. Those wanting something adventurous will lap it up.

God damn it Blanchett stop ruining movies with your weirdo performaces.

They could have at least given her Dylan in one of his crappy eras.. but the 60's?? Fuck.
