I'm pissed... ergh (Rant inside)

I just got a new HDTV yesterday (42 inch Samsung tabletop model. Got a SWEET deal on it). So now I'm ready to get into gaming in glorious HD!

So I go to the local Gamestop (mistake #1) and pick up a used Official HD compant pack. A couple hours later I get around to hooking it up and nothing. No signal.. nada, zilch. Ergh!

Of course I could take it back, until I looked at the time..5 till 6. DAMMIT. Ergh!

It wouldn't be so bad if the Xbox games didn't look so bad without the HD pack.... they look TERRIBLE through regular RCA cables.

Ah well.. just blowing off some steam over faulty hardware...

You did set your Xbox dash to 480p/720p/1080i and enable widescreen. (settings/video) And you double checked the color coding on your cables. And you made sure that everything is securely plugged in. right?

Well the PS2 has an option in certain games to turn on for progressive scan, and the system settings has one for different kinds of component connections.

I dont have an X-box, but I am willing to bet there is a similar option you are overlooking...

My dash doesnt have the option to set for 480p/720p/1080p and widescreen has been enabled. Color coding was fine. I'll check again later, but unless I'm just missing it I dont have the option to change to 1080p... which is what my TV supports.

Everything works fine through RCA cables though...

TV is fine..brand new

I forgot to mention that I picked up the cables as a "Used" item... which is why I think the cables are screwed.

You in Europe then? Because many non NTSC Xbox systems don't support HD. If you're not seeing the option to change your video outputs to include HD resolution, that's eitehr because it's pal, or you have a non hd pack plugged in.

Turn on your xbox with no game in drive

If it goes to the LIVE screen, press B to go back to the dash.

In the dashboard, the bottom option says SETTINGS

Choose that

Select VIDEO

If the only option in there is widescreen, you don't have the HD pack connected.

This is the catch 22... I cant see shit on the screen to be able to SEE the setting then. It is connected.

OK, try this. Click both thumbsticks down and press both triggers at the same time. If that doesn't work, you're screwed.

I do hope thats in the xbox instruction manual, because thats a random thing to find out to do.

It's a semi-hidden add-on feature from one of the dashboard updates, really to help folks troubleshoot HD connections.

Ok problem solved. I replaced the red video cable.. that was the problem. It had a short in it.

I'll have to return them and get a fresh set.

Thanks for your help people.
