I'm Writing A Book!

It's going to be a text book. Basically, an introduction to game design, mostly modeled after my class that I teach.

But yeah, its my first book, and I'm super psyched. I was going to do one last year on anime & manga... an encyclopedia of sorts, but things didn't pan out (I think some around here might recall me asking for contributors for that one).

Anyway, it should see print by the spring or summer of 2007. And I'll obviously be passing along info once its available.

might want to pass this a long as a good example of bad art and bad game design

Zelda: Wand of Gamelon and Link: Faces of Evil are actually two okay games.
Great music, nice 2d backgrounds, varied locations and hilarious animation.

The developers upgraded the enemies to what they should look like, true to the Zelda storyline from the comics. The real storyline for those of us who followed the comics and cartoons.
That was before Nintendo started butchering up the franchise and "re-telling" the legend in every game.

IMO cool teenage "excuuse me princess" Link > hiyaaa screming Link.

They even used the name Harkinian for the King of Hyrule. Talk about research.
Ok, so they renamed rupies to rubies.. but every enemy is adequately upgraded and looks just as I had envisioned them to be in the 16bit gen.

The games might suck to some self-titled Zelda fanatics, but I had 10 times the fun with them than I had with the Oracle games. Wireless remote controlled Zelda in 1993 FTW.

Hope it stands out from the other hundred or so design manuals and texts that have flooded the market over the past few years.

You and me both buddy. And I know full well that once the book comes out, there'll be even more books out there.

What games have you designed?

That's really the $64,000 question isn't it?

Well I have designed and worked on numerous games for various platforms (everything from cell phones to the PS2), but I'm certain you haven't heard any of them (unless you live in the UK and have played a good deal of budget games based on 80's properties). So I've never made a break out game that many people have played (well, there is one, but the last time I mentioned it on the GAF, since its adult oriented, so I guess I'll abstain)

Well, then do I have the qualification to write a book on the subject of game design? Maybe, maybe not. Though keep in mind, I'm not writing a how to book on the way to successfully make a good game. Instead, its aim is to be a guide that introduces the fundamentals of game design, and explore concepts that any person who makes a game, no matter how big or small, or what platform it is (or depending on the platform as well) should always consider. Also, along with my own examination of the subject, I'll try to have others chime in on their thoughts and ideas, as well as offer a historical context to everything, which is what I try to do in my class.

Cool, I'll definitely pick up the book! Speaking of which I still need to order Retro Gaming Hacks...

Doing (good) designs for budget games and crappy licenses is hard.

FortNinety, for months now the way my brain has separated you from the others on this forum is with the description "Game design teacher; worked on Charles in Charge RPG." If only each chapter could end with an anecdote about how these lessons apply to Charles in Charge. Damn you, missing design document! :lol

Trust me, with so many people asking for details, I pretty much am going to include something[/i[ about it if I ever want to see any sales! :)
