IMO, Asteroids still holds up today.

I'm talking about the 1979 version. I played a version of it when I was younger, I think the Atari2600 version. I've been playing the arcade version over the past few days and I think the game still holds up well today. I can't place my finger on it, but for some reason I really enjoy the graphics of the game. I think it's because they made really good use of what they had to work with and the game looks really nice in motion. :D

vector ftw

It is because the core psychology of the game is sound. Your mission is to clear the screen and the simple act is interesting and invovling. On top of that add the excellent momentum based physics, controlled randomization, strategic elements whereby the player chooses just how chaotic the action gets and when, the asteroid vector dodging, and top with some very good sound effects and the game is classic and complete.

Asteroids does hold up well, but then so do most of the great arcade games of the past. Personally, I think Space Duel is better in every way and, given the choice, would always pick SD over plain ol' Asteroids.

I prefer Asteroids Deluxe, and I've got a cocktail cab about 6 inches from me right now! I play it more than most modern games. All these years later I'm still totally in love with the look of B&W vectors. (Color is cool too, just not as cool.)
