In WindowsXP, how do you make a folder retain it's settings?

For example, supposed I make a folder and put all my MP3s in it. Then I maximize the folder, set the view to details, then make the details show stuff like album, artist, song duration, etc.

When I come back to the folder, all the settings are lost. Is there a way to make it retain those settings so that when I come back to the folder later on, it's exactly how I left it?

It sounds like you've used more than Windows XP's default remembered folder views of 400. When it passes that value, it just forgets the settings for each subsequent modified folder.

You can edit the size like this:

These keys can be modified to make XP remember more folder settings.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools--Folder Options--View--Advanced Settings. Ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

Open Regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell. Right-click on "Shell", then follow to New--Key--DWORD Value. Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space between BagMRU and Size). Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000 (or whatever), then click OK.

Now go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam. Create another BagMRU Size DWORD Value for "ShellNoRoam". Again, give it a Decimal value of 2000 (or whatever), then click OK.

You will have two "BagMRU Size" values equal to 0x000007d0 (2000).
X-Setup Pro 6.6 (free tweaking software), also gives you the option to change the number in a more simplistic fashion. It also includes a TON of gui/system tweaks (be careful with them though, but at least you can log your changes if you run into hurdles).
