Dustbowl - FREE ALPHA (PC)
Caves1.png

http://www.dustbowl-adventure.com/
Dustbowl is an epic adventure RPG set in a bleak world that has been turned into a wasteland covered in toxic dust. You are just one of the survivors that made it through the nightmare and now you’re on your own.

Is that okay? Should I strip my LP from it and do an impression on a different post?

Yeah, including the likely kill kill Toma-Bot anyway as I didnt tell him to process links in the main body. Just post your LPs in the thread however you want and make normal posts without extra references :) Since you are the most active LP member atm though, I could possibly include your channel in the media section next month.

If I ever have a drought of games to review, I really want to marathon a gamejam. I only got through 1/4 of 7dFPS.

edit: How do you guys keep track of LD? It seems like a giant hodgepodge

Aren't there usually like hundreds of submissions for LD? Or is this one different?

Correct and we'd do exactly what you think we do if we want to give some LD impressions. Going rougly through big parts, checking which games look interesting at first sight and then just trying dozens.

Personally I don't keep track of it, just too much games. xD

I had my work christmas party last night so I feel.... worse for wear. A perfect day to play some OP indie games at the start of the month instead of at the end!

I watched a little of those game award things last night but I missed most of the cool reveals. Zelda looks ok - but No Man's Sky stole it, again.

Thousands, even. More_Badass just picked out a few from the last one.

MB is a hero. Also.... what are you working on next? I need more ways to give you money!

Alright well I'm making excellent progress on my queue. If there are games that you guys recommend I'll try to cover them as well.

Hey man - I'm just watching through your Deer God LP and I wanted to say you do a great job! Just enough chat over the top of the game - keep up the good stuff!

Thanks! I do more of a minimalist commentary. Which means I only comment on things that, well, should be commented on.

I appreciate it.

Elegy for a Dead World - PC
gif5.gif

http://www.dejobaan.com/elegy/

In Elegy for a Dead World, you travel to distant planets and create stories about the people who once lived there.

Three portals have opened to uncharted worlds. Earth has sent a team of explorers to investigate them, but after an accident, you are the sole survivor. Your mission remains the same: survey these worlds and write the only accounts of them that outsiders will ever know.

No one noticed the voting list was still the one from last month :p

Corrected now.

Really exciting week ahead with the upcoming release of The Talos Principle on December 11th! Really impressed and can't get enough of this game. Had access to it for a little over a month now and it's easily one of, if not the best game I've played this year.

mavboq.gif

It's a first-person puzzle game with a philosophical sci-fi twist and it's part-written by Tom Jubert who wrote FTL & The Swapper, and I loved The Swapper. It's hard to describe what I like about it but the game constantly surprises you with evolving puzzles as the game gradually introduces new mechanics and ways to solve them. The world itself really sucks you in and it seems there's a lot to discover and experience. The game looks great too.

There's a lot more I could say about it but I don't want to ramble on. I made a first impressions with a bunch of other videos, but the game doesn't really show it's potential until my second video. Embargo ends today so I'll be streaming and uploading more content too. Can't wait to play more.

That looks incredible :-o

But HOLY crap is it expensive. 40€? For a 3D puzzle game? Seriously? I am not one to complain about Indie game prices usually, but 40€ for a portal style puzzle game is really... tough to swallow. I assume its not that long either? How much content does it have? Most games in the genre end up around 3-5 hours.

Talos Principle looks really nice.

So a few questions for you fine people.

1.) Is there any guidelines to follow for this thread? More_badass linked Dustbowl last month and the only reason I re-added it was because a download link was now available.

2.) Is there a seperate thread for Ludum Dare, or will user-best-of be posted in here?

1. We add games once for the Future section and twice in the released section (first playable version (alpha, beta, demo)) and then on full release.

2. There are LD threads, but they get lost in the wind. It makes sense to post best of LD here and in whatever thread is the most recent for most exposure.

Actually quite a few cool relwases this week: Dog Sled Saga, Distance, Xeodrifter

All three of those games I'm looking forward to, my poor poor wallet.

The Destructoid review quoted that it look him 20 hours to see mostly everything.

To be honest with you the game is unbelievably packed with content. I've put in 13 hours so far and I have only just got to "Area C" (From what I can tell, there are three areas A, B & C) however there's tons to accomplish and discover and I can guarantee you that more lies ahead of what I believe to be the final "area". The review notes state: "The Talos Principle can easily take 15-20 hours to reach one of several endings – much more if you want to uncover everything within the game and additional endings."

So with multiple endings, side-puzzles and I believe moddable content, the life-span looks to be pretty good. From what I've played, it definitely feels like a full game and more. It's on another level compared to what you'd expect from a first-person indie puzzle game. It's right up there with Portal and Antichamber.

Reviews have come out today and it's got nothing but praise from what I can tell. Every time I play it gives me something new and I'm constantly surprised and blown away. Can't get enough of it and is well worth the asking price if you like a deep narrative based games with some of the most mind blowing puzzles you'll ever encounter. It's that good.

That sounds better yeah, considering Antichamber was around 7 hours long. Looking forward to trying it eventually when the price sank a bit.

You know, I am part of the "problem" by waiting for sale prices on such games, but I do get the impression that those day 1 prices are overall rising to account for the current sale culture 1-2 months after release. Stupid spiral.

Satellite Reign this week! So hyped for that

Actually quite a few cool releases this week: Dog Sled Saga, Distance, Xeodrifter

Distance is very good. There is a definite story there, which is awesome considering it's a racing game. I only got code in for Dog Sled Saga this morning, so I won't be able to have anything up until tonight/tomorrow. I think I may have code for Xeodrifter, but I dunno. Hopefully I can get that before the game goes live.

In any event, I have a Let's Play up for Elegy for a Dead World.

Quick Impressions:

If you like Twine games and/or like making Twine games; Elegy for a Dead World is most likely up your alley. I don't really fancy myself a writer. I can write things and stuff or stuff and things in a graceful enough manner but I don't find myself actively looking to flex my pencraft muscle.

There are three portals where you can test your raconteur and within those portals your options pretty much simmer down to 'Caption Contest' and varying degrees of 'Madlibs'. But I do find it to be more of a *game* if only because of the inclusion of three simple achievements. If you can get 1000 commendations on your work, in that particular portal, you unlock the achievement.

Before I saw the achievement I thought it would be an interesting experiment. Now it's competitive writing.

Pretty neat.

Nom Nom Galaxy (PixelJunk Inc) is part of the IndieGala Monday #37 bundle. You can grab it for $1.89 along with a pack of other games.

I was excited to get my hands on it at first, but it seemed too early and a bit too expensive at the time. This deal is perfect for me.

I bought the game on GreenmanGaming with a coupon code.

23,62 euros.

Elliot Quest - I can't say how much I'm enjoying my time, o far I'm 8 hours into the game and I think I may be reaching the half of the game but still are previous areas to explore with my new a acquired abilities (I should have noted the areas that I wasn't able to reach before -_-). The losing xp on death is annoying in the start of the game, but as you progress and get more hearts and abilities it become manageable. Can't recommend this game enough.

My Let's Play of Dog Sled Saga:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzjCxopDxI4

Quick Impressions:

Mechanically speaking, there are only a handful of actions that are required of you whilst you are Dog-Sleding. You click and hold the mouse button to initiate a variable trajectory with which you try and hurl dog biscuits into your awesome dog's mouth. You'll know your dogs are hungry by their panting breath against the cold pixel-y wind.

It is actually quite easy to blunder this up. First if you try and feed your dogs before they are hungry, it will comically bounce off their noggin and you'll have lost a doggy biscuit. Second if you just clearly miss (some dogs seem to be better catchers than others) well then you're probably going to lose the race. But sometimes you can miss because you aren't paying attention to the huge TREE INCOMING sign.

So what happens if your dogs are hungry? Well, aside from going slow they trip up the works. You'll have to, in real-time, adjust the length of rope dividing the dogs to make sure it has proper length to avoid getting tangled. Outside of that, I'm not really sure. I never went that far without feeding my dogs.

Dog Sled Saga is surprisingly deep despite being pretty shallow. All of the game can be controlled via the mouse and one mouse button. You don't really need to tend to your dogs outside of the races, like a tamagotchi. The only thing you need to concern yourself with is if they are tired and if they get along with other dogs on your team and what type of position they like to be in.

Despite all of this, I did find myself becoming attached to my Dog Sled Saga team. The pixel art is wonderful to watch and the music, my goodness the music. It is great! I mean, the music is 8-bit style, but it's SO WELL DONE. Truly gets stuck in my head.

I am a fan of Dog Sled Saga even though right now it seems kind of bare-bones.

I had to go to page SEVEN to find this thread. What a disgrace.

Anyway - super stoked for some indie love this week, some really good stuff this week.

Been super busy the last few weeks, being the last weeks of my last semester and all.

You don't subscribe to threads?

Dungeonmans is officially out now. If you like turn-based roguelikes I would consider this a must buy. The game also features permanent progression if that is your kind of thing or you can skip that and go fresh every death.

Doesn't that mean I get sent a bunch of emails every time someone posts?
No, no emails unless you set it to send you emails.

Subscribing is really useful. You can go to your subscriptions page and go directly to your subscribed threads. You can also set it so you auto-subscribe when you post in a thread. I rarely venture into GAF proper, mainly sticking to my subscribed threads and the insanity that is Off Topic

Yup, it then looks like this:

I actually set the "User Control Panel" on GAF as my main website in the browser, so it always opens this page first and shows me which of my subscribed threads have new content. I think I have around 120 subscribed threads atm.
