More OP impressions, Deity Quest:
deity_quest_meteor.png
This game is noticeably inspired by Pokemon while adding some twists to the standard formula. The game is way behind Pokemon obviously, but most of these games are, so thats not inherently a negative in itself. It took me a while to understand how the main battle mechanics work and the first impression wasnt the best, mainly because the game seems very unresponsive at first and the levels are extremely generic. However, though not the deepest, the main battle mechanic is actually intriguing enough to motivate me playing the game for a while. Levelled up monsters learn new skills and the monsters automatically attack in a fight and you can then choose the skills they use on the fly without a traditional "attack, defend, items" menu option for each monster. That system also differentiates between melee/ranged attacks and some monsters even have equip slots for their weapons. The game needs a LOT more polish on everything, and the battle system itself could use some improvements too, but its an interesting concept. Working on the monster party and figuring out a good setup is pretty rewarding, too bad that the actual exploration is not terribly well designed, otherwise this could be actually a fun game.

Epic Flail
Very simple highscore game and surprisingly fun. You only one move which you need to use to outmaneuver enemies: Dashing. With increasing difficulty, you also collect the equipment of enemies, which doubles as your armor/increased health. Not much else to say about this game, fun. You guys should try it.

Farsh
Puzzle game with a fairly well known formula of moving and tilting an object to maneuver around obstacles/along a certain path. The game is a bit simple though and I am not too fond the way the game structures the challenges/levels. I really love the backstory of the art design of the game though, unfortunately that doesnt make the game much more "fun", so I cant give it a thumbs up.

Fearless Fantasy
Challenge based RPG with time based action combat. The combat is very fun, since it keeps the player on his toes and rewards with coins and experience for equipment and skill upgrades. I also love the enemy designs. Unfortunately, I feel like I am really missing the actual RPG world around it and its a bit of a shame that the game is only about those combat challenges, even if the combat itself is fun enough.

No big highlights for me this month so far, Epic Flail is sweet, but its just a small game.

400 Years - Surprisingly relaxing, as other(s) pointed out the character moves very slow but it fits the in the game. The puzzles so far are smart and even if there are only one main mechanic you still need to think how much time you need to wait to solve the puzzle. Recommended.

I didn't know Ironclad Tactics was from the dev of SpaceChem. Is it good? Currently $10 on Gamefly

Yeah, it's good, sort of a real time/turn based strategy game. The vs multiplayer is probably dead right now and honestly the weakest part of the game, but the single player missions are worth playing through. Worth noting you can play most of the campaign on co-op and that is worth doing if you have a mate, it's pretty fun.

Very good game, even if it doesn't reach the status that SpaceChem has for me.

I might be remembering wrong, but wasn't the multiplayer required to unlock some things?

Yeah, you unlock some cards by doing MP, but they arent required to finish the game.

Might have found my highlight for june. Impressions coming up later, cant stop playing :p

Going to keep us in suspense?

Gotta keep up the play a bit to draw out the excitement! I am still working through the tutorial missions, but the only way this game could possibly fail now is if the promised "single player campaign" is nonexistant or only consists of 3 levels that I am seeing at the end of the tutorial. If its just that, I'd be hugely disappointed but the game would still probably land at the top of my list this month.

Grid Legion, Voyage.

I hate that stupid "fog" filter, but the rest of the game is absolutely ace. I just really hope it has enough content.

OP impressions at the speed of light:

For SCIENCE!
Interesting concept that is mostly bogged down by accessibility issues and the necessity of making it into more of a game. The game basically offers you empty spaces on the world map, in which you can build your own factories and research labs. I like how the different areas of the world have different stats, as in "expensive market, but cheap undergrads", which will affect how the exact effectivity of your buildings turn out to be. A basic example would be to build a manufactory that creates computational parts, then set up a few work shops that need to be linked to the manufactory to increase its output, and then link the manufactory to a storage space to have a simple, but working production chain. The design of these seems to be modelled after real life counterparts, which is a cool touch, however it also makes the layout a bit confusing since its hard to tell at one glance what each building is doing if their design does not clearly represent its purpose. One example of that would be the library, the mail desk and the normal work desk all being desk with a chair and stuff around them. Sure, you eventually get used to the nuances of these, but its an additional hurdle that makes the concept a bit hard to grasp, in addition to other issues like building descriptions that dont clearly tell a player how that building will need to be used in ingame concepts and some seemingly arbitrary rules about how some buildings need to be connected to give output, while others dont, for example how a research lab needs to be connected to a work desk to create biology papers (which lets you research more advanced technology), while a cubicle desk doesnt need to be connected at all and does... something? I am really not all that dense when it comes to games, but the game really would need someone to improve the accessibility before it has any chance of gathering some interest. Still, intriguing nonetheless.

Grid Legion, Voyage
Sooo, there you have it. My highlight for this month.Apparently for SP, there really are only the tutorial levels and 4 "proper" levels with 4 difficulties, but even those should keep you plenty busy if you like the combat system, with the promise of competetive, cooperative and draft plays coming soon. Its a Collectible Card battle game with quite a few interesting ideas, of which the most important one is the battle arena itself. The battle area has 5 rows, which limits the usability of the cards as most cards can only be placed in certain rows, which creates a very interesting dynamic to considera certain combination of cards in favor of others or whether to waste action points on relocating cards to make space for others. That aspect is even further developed by the individual grid tiles, which have different effects and bonusses, that may range from "no unit can be build here", over "any building here gets will be activated faster" to "a unit here gets +5 damage". The amount of different possibilities and ways to plan/restructure a battle layout is incredibly appealing as there is quite a lot to consider. The tutorials do a great job of easing you into the game, but unfortunately, and here is my biggest gripe, it seems like the "Single Player campaign" really only consists of tutorials and 4 (challenging) levels in the end. You'll still probably get 6-8 hours of content out of this game if you want to finish the content, but its a bit of a wasted opportunity to downright unlock all cards of every color instead of earning them a bit slower in a better paced campaign with different and eventually more devious arena grids. Anyway, even considering this, the concept and current execution is very, very good (outside of the stupid fog filter). Bonus points for an intuitive and easily usable control scheme even without a mouse and the ability to marvel at the full size art work done by several DevianArtists, for which I assume he got the permission.(Press A on a card and then S on the picture). Very well thought out battle system, nice art work, deep tactical possibilities and challenging combat. Ace.

Icebound
More of a visual novel than a game with about 90% reading and 10% puzzle game. The puzzle parts are rather weak, and even though the integration of the puzzle game makes sense since its moments in which the main character actively adjusts/solves a problem in the story, I would have preferred a more interesting puzzle mechanic. The story itself is pretty interesting however, with unique races/characters and a mysterious background story in a setup that I like (I have a thing for worlds covered in snow and ice). If you like visual novels and want some relaxed "gaming" while reading, this might be worth looking into, but to be fair, I wont play more than the free demo myself (unless it gets an IGS deal or something).

Jet Force
Surprisingly another highlight for me this month. As you see from the screenshot, its a retro inspired run&gun shooter with varied enemy designs, interesting boss battles, a decent amount of challenge without being overly punishing (you can restart from "checkpoints" by writing down passwords), VERY good movement "physics", which are emphasized with the games jet mechanic which allows you to steer very precisely onto a platform and a rather satisfying powerup system, which emphasizes quick play by only giving you 30-40 seconds of each power up. The jet movement in particular stands out quite positively once you got into the hang of positioning yourself properly in fights by flying or hovering instead of only walking forward. One example is a boss I couldnt defeat due to him coming up from the ground and eventually killing me because I took damage every time appeared. I finally understood that I was supposed to hover slightly above the ground shortly before the boss comes out and then decide where to land and to attack the boss. Neat game, if you like games similar to Oniken, you need to check this out.

Kitsuni
A puzzle adventure game of sorts in which you are tasked with collecting gems to solve a mystery. While the overall game goal (collect gems) is rather derivative, the art style and individual puzzles manage to be rather interesting at times when you need to manipulate different enemies to solve each puzzle with their corresponding ability. Some puzzles are a bit obtuse, while others are painfully obvious, but its still an intriguing affair overall, even if most of my enjoyment derived from looking at the pretty art style. Worth checking out in any case, even if a bit simplistic.

Prisoned
A short story, wrapped in pretty graphics. The story and message might be personal to the dev itself, but the execution and message I got from it felt a bit... redundant? Its not all that bad, but I didnt get much out of it, other than the very nice art style and some minor twists with color.

Random Notes:

- I wont play Hackn Slash because it seems too expensive (for me) for something that can be finished in apparently 2 hours and maybe 3 upon full release. Figured I'd mention this for anyone else interested.

- I moved Insanity's Blade to the future games section, because they removed the free beta, and the game can currently only be played by the KS backers.

- Moved OTTTD to the future games section because PC release coming "soon".

Made a non commentary gameplay video of the new Crimsonland and decided to post it now before the E3 hubbub, since no one will notice the release of the game in 2 days anyway once E3 started rolling:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVPbJWcxz7c&feature=youtu.be

I played a chapter of the 2nd difficulty and then show off the survival mode later on with the perks. I think the video shows off the enemy/level setup variety and perks in the survival mode quite nicely, so I hope that video helps someone getting interested in the game.

lol? They banned you for comments you made on another forum? Hahaha. Oh god, if I did stuff like that at work, I'd get my ass fired in no time. I can easily see how that topic might rile someone up if even the administrators cant have a civil discourse about the merits and disadvantages instead of bashing F2P all the time (which I suppose was happening).

Indeed, if mods/admins say you are out, you dont really have much of a chance. Toucharcade isnt even big enough to make a stir about that on GAF or something, but still its good to know which sites to put on my shithead list.

Sub Commander - Free alpha (PC)
bu8DqPu.png

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=202304

Sub Commander is a free, independently developed roguelike submarine simulator with an emphasis on realism and freedom of choice. Originally, the game was envisioned to be a kind of cross between Dwarf Fortress and the film K-19 The Widowmaker but it is rapidly growing to a full featured submarine warfare simulator. Eventually I plan to simulate all aspects of cold war era naval and aerial combat, so the player's submarine will be in the midst of a dynamic, procedurally generated global war.

A... roguelike... submarine simulator. Wat.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/06/09/sub-commander/#more-212017
Most roguelikes are about creatures: simulating the skills of your hero, the dwarves of your dwarf fortress, or the ruleset of your enemies in something like Angband. Sub Commander has its crew of coloured dots, each with their own job, skills and equipment, but it’s the submarine itself which gets the greatest amount of attention. It’s the vessel that transports you to your target for any given mission, but it’s also a dungeon, and the enemy that’s most likely to kill you.
Something in the torpedo room has exploded. Every moving part on your ship has the ability to become damaged and break, just through the wear and tear of normal use. It’s possible to order your crew to carry out inspections of any part of the ship, but it’s far more likely that your first indication of something being wrong will be a crack in the hull, some radiation leaking out of your generators, or as in this case, an explosion.

The initial blast kills one of my men instantly. I act quickly by sending two more people into the torpedo room to fight the fires, but this proves a bad idea. Torpedoes are basically just explosives. Now they’re explosives which are on fire, and those have a different name: explosions. Each torpedo not loaded into a launch tube explodes, causing more fire, more injury and more hull breaches. I’m currently surfaced somewhere near the East China sea, so there’s no risk of those hull breaches causing a flood, but…

Hey Indie game fans! Here's a quick post about a graphical roguelike game I made called Voyage to Farland.

It's inspired by the Japanese "console" roguelikes and I started a Greenlight campaign just over a month ago. Here's a special Greenlight Demo build that includes the latest sprite sheet work intended for the next official release.

BFumvWd.png

Quick elevator pitch:

You are a wandering adventurer, looking for your kidnapped sister. But to find her, you'll have to fight mask-wearing severed heads, ill-tempered beetles that spin and toss you, catapult-riding felines that lob items at you, plus more crazy monsters with crazier powers in this hardcore, permadeath adventure.

Some features:

• 5 dungeons including 4 unlockable themed dungeons
• 4 NPCs you can recruit to help you fight
• rescue codes to save and be saved by other players
• get a pet toy robot you can level up (he'll fight alongside you)
• befriend an outcast monster that will help you fight
• learn tricks to survive in the Strategy Dungeon
• build weapon & shield enchantments and store gear in a warehouse

The game's strategy heavy enough that I wrote a "Guide to Not Dying" for it. Also, if you're interested in game design, check out a blog post I wrote about the game and its major influences. Up to now, I've focused on the gameplay, but I'm working on a bit more graphical polish lately.

Finally, here's a strange promo video I made (influenced by "The Ring"). WARNING: Do not watch if you are a superstitious person...

Thanks for reading!

Wormhunter - I got really excited for this game after reading the description, in theory the idea is very good but the execution is flawed. The worms AI are easily exploited you wait for it to show up and attack when it goes underground again just do dodge and it will appear at your previous location before the dodge, the beacon ended being useless.

We are currently reworking the worms AI, because it is really poorly done for the Ludum Dare version. Wormhunter is still a prototype of a small potion of what Wormhunter would be as a full game hopefully we will have a great execution after a few more iterations.

Gaming is dead. AAA has no games. Indies don't exist. Wah wah wah.

Growing seriously weary.

I'm getting old, GAF. After watching all of the press conferences so far. It seems like every game is just explosions as you shoot stuff with a gun or explosions as you slash stuff with your sword. They've all rolled into one numbing experience. The Indie games are the only ones that have kept my interest.

Unfortunately that's what people buy. And a whole bunch of indie games will involve shooting or slicing stuff.

I'm reading a couple of threads right now to catch up - LBP3? "Looks shit, floaty jumping makes it unplayable" - The Order? "Too scripted" - Halo collection? "Just a remake" - Rainbow 6? "Another sequel"

I'm so drained reading this fatigue - we have games trying to go in different directions that get constantly criticised. If the new Rainbow 6 was an original IP people would be wetting themselves, or if Hardline wasn't Battlefield.

People complain about the lack of innovation in the AAA space (which I think is a nonsense claim anyway) then dismiss indie games as "shit" or "2d platformers"...

People complained about the Destiny ALPHA footage and then in the same breath whine when companies show CG trailer for games. Developers and publishers talk on stage about how "thankful" they are for the gaming community but I wouldn't be surprised if they fucking hate it.

A bunch of entitled whiners with impossibly high standards who can't enjoy games for what they are.

What makes you say that? I completely disagree. Games largely get criticised for what they are, the impression they make, not the franchise they're attached to. CoD didn't get as much flak this year because it looked like Crysis a faint departure from the Modern Warfare formula. Hardline, on the other hand, looked boring as hell, and Rainbow Six could be something fresh for genre fans, but it's hardly possible to evaluate it at this point, after a single trailer that reached 'Division' levels of scriptedness.

People dismissing the fatigue of others run the risk of making generalisations about other people which is always worse than doing the same to games.

I guess it's personal preference - but Hardline looks a much bigger departure for the series than the new CoD does. AC Unity looks like it could finally realise the series' potential, The Witcher looks incredible, Inquisition has promise etc

To write off game after game based on a single showing is ridiculous - especially when people demonstrate complete hypocrisy while doing it. If the AAA space isn't imaginative enough, don't write off indies as junk. If game's aren't colourful enough why write off Sunset Overdrive? If remakes are a waste of time why get excited about the Halo collection? TLOU remastered?

I have no problem with people having opinions or fatigue - but maybe try playing something else and broadening your horizons? Or take a break from gaming?

As long as you're not shuffling very different parts of the audience together, you're definitely right regarding hypocrisy. What I try to bear in mind, though, is that a) a lot of people don't put too much thought in their feelings about a game/games and b) can't always articulate and differentiate those feelings super well.

I think its extremely weird that people are so dissatisfied with the games output.Even the AAA games shown/hinted at were quite exciting. Sunset Overdrive looks fun, Bloodborne is wooooah, the new characters in LBP are a great addition, order has a great setting, destiny looks bombastic, etcetc. And I wont even comment on the Indie complaints.

We knew that current gen would have less games overall than last gen due to the rising development costs (except assassins creed games, which will soon change to a monthly series probably), but the games we get actually seem pretty interesting and diverse to me overall. People complaining about too much standard shootbang games really seem to miss the Indie scene completely or something.

As a slightly older gamer/dev myself, I feel your pain. The Nintendo DS and Japanese games (Earthbound/Mother, Meteos, Shiren the Wanderer) are what brought me back from being a lapsed gamer.

It seems "video game" = "FPS with amazing graphics" to many people these days. I'm more into 2D non-twitch games myself. 3D was never immersive enough for me - no peripheral vision. About the only modern 3D game that hooked me was Dementium. The limitations of "3D" games worked well there, since it was horror. Well, I like Mario Kart, too...

Since I put my game on Steam Greenlight (see a few posts up), it's been especially interesting. Seems like any FPS gets Greenlit quickly (except Fancy Skulls - but that'll likely be greenlit this month), while other genres languish, and Steamers lament the "shovelware" that Valve is greenlighting (they likely consider my game shovelware, too - 2D, not enough explosions, etc.)

Oh well, I guess studios are making what the market wants.

I am really enjoying Beasts Of Prey. Devs are very active on steam and listening to the community. Its early access but I enjoy supporting and this genre a lot. Loving my time and there are updates/fixes with notice of such.

Very happy with my purchase. Dam Dinos scrared heck out of me and I have couple houses I built on my claimed land.
