Indie Games 2014 [June] Now Voting - Post 538!

Guys, if you like the classic isometric RPGs like Baldurs Gate, grab Inquisitor on Steam for 3-4 bucks during the steam sale now. The game is fantastic. Bigger writeup and thread probably coming over the weekend.

I picked this up based on GAF impressions. Going to play some tonight.

I think releasing during the Summer Sale is going to make the Shovel Knight developers wish they didn't delay the Steam release for parity with Nintendo (at least I can only assume they are doing this).

I think so too - but I hope it does well.

Vagante Alpha is up for anyone interested.
AgitatedAridDuckbillplatypus.gif

I tried it and for an early alpha it's got great potential. I sure am looking forward to seeing this as a finished product!

Where did you find this? It's really damn good

Awesome - I can't find them on Twitter at all
I wish all devs would use Twitter, even if it is just to post a link to updates elsewhere. It is the easiest way for me to keep track of all of these game which I end up forgetting about otherwise.

Edit: Or a Greenlight page is a good alternative since you can follow them and get updates on your activity feed too which is nice.

Perhaps, I think (and hope) that Shovel Knight has enough exposure to be fairly immune to the negative sales impact that releasing during a sale might cause, although it will probably cause a slight impact for sure.

Yes, they won't be affected as much as some games would be, for sure.

http://www.nimbatus.ch/

Nimbatus is a game where you can build your own drones and deploy them to explore remote planets. On your journey you will encounter extraterrestrial wildlife and find pieces of alien technology you can use to upgrade your drones.
The planets are randomly generated, fully destructible and virtually endless in size. The alien creatures you encounter get stronger the deeper you delve into the world. The drones and all alien creatures behave physically correct, this means that you should try not to crash your drone into a cliff.

The Testament of the White Cypress - Free alpha (PC, Mac, Linux)
637x358.resizedimage

http://blocky.io/cypress.html

Using the mouse and keyboard, a single player controls a lone monk named Geoffrey as he travels through a post-apocalyptic wilderness on his journey to the great monastery known as Valisade. Gameplay in "Cypress" involves ranged combat with bow-and-arrow, management of food and shelter, NPC conversations, item crafting, and several different magical powers.
"Cypress" is presented in 1080p High Definition. All objects and animations in the game are hand-painted with acrylic and colored pencil, scanned, and stored internally at 300dpi. Now ten months into full-time production, I have tried to recreate and revitalize the look-and-feel of 1990's era computer roleplaying games such as the Ultima series.

My work and life schedule has been very busy lately, but I'm still getting a lot of progress done when I find the time.

To those of you who have played builds in the past: Combat is very different, castle is very different, enemies are very different, game structure is very different. And hints of story/NPCs are starting to appear.

Crossposting my Inquisitor thread, I am sure most of you see it anyway, but here it goes. I bought it yesterday and couldnt stop playing for 14 hours. I just put up a thread for it to convince some people to grab it for $3 before I go back to playing MOAR:

tdCm7j1.jpg

If you like well big amounts of well written story text, challenging games, exploring game mechanics to figure out the best way to handle situations instead of being told what to do and can look past the issues the game undoubtedly has, Inquisitor might just turn out to be one of the most interesting RPGs you ever played. Objectively judging the whole package its probably in the 7/10 range, but I noticed that for certain players, this game might just turn out to be quite a bit more than that.

Angels fall first and seaworthy looking really good.

Toma, is there any necromancer-like classes in inquisitor?

Paladin, Wizard and Rogue. Not sure whether some of the high level spells have necromancy stuff, but there are 6-7 magic schools.

Angels Fall First - PC

Wow, this is still being made? I followed this game years ago when it was a contender on Make Something Unreal back in the olden days and then a while after when it continued its development. I thought it was dead, glad to see it is still kicking. Its the mod (maybe they have now moved on to make it its own game?) that got me so interest in the potential of cooperative ship games like Guns of Icarus etc.

Yup, still in development. Here are some other recent images:

Battleblock Theater
BattleBlock Theater sets the tone right from the start with a hilariously well-done intro cutscene. It's a wacky and silly game with solid platforming that mix precision, puzzles, combat, and really well designed levels. The game is colorful and vibrant, and just feels great to play. While the early levels aren't that challenging, the difficulty ramps up nicely and I like that the levels aren't your usual short 15 second speedruns, but more open to explore

Flockers
I should probably preface this by saying I've never played Lemmings. I've played games inspired by Lemmings and I know the concept behind Lemmings, but I've never played the game. So I can't really say if Flockers is too derivative or generic, but it is a fun enjoyable action puzzle game. Your flock of sheep automatically move through Rube Goldberg-esque networks of deadly machinery and traps and it's up to you to command them and grant them abilities at the best times to help your flock survive. The complex traps are well designed and cool to see in motion (and failure is just as enjoyable when your poor sheep explode into showers of blood and gore). Flocker's Early Access, but there's a nice amount of levels currently, as well as a level editor.

Wormhunter
Not much really to say about Wormhunter, since it's more of a concept than a full fledged game, but I like the style and the core idea is solid and has potential to be expanded and improved in interesting ways.

Crashed Lander
I didn't really play much of this game. I like the visuals and the environments look interesting and cool, but the controls feel very finnicky and imprecise. Which might be intentional, but it's the kind of controls that just feel bad, not fun, compared to QWOP or Surgeon Simulator. I'm happy I got it for a $1 on IGS, and not full price.

Pyroeis
Game feels very early, more like a tech demo than anything else, but there are promising aspects that make me want to keep an eye on the game, While procedural caverns are pretty bland, the deep long tunnels give a sense of traversing far into a planet, like you're truly entering some unexplored place. The coolest aspect is the destructible environments; your bombs can deform the terrain and debris piles and tumbles around. It feels rudimentary in terms of a gameplay, but there's a lot of potential for interesting scenarios and mechanics.

Kitsuni
I liked the art style, and the mysterious atmosphere, but I think the game was kind of boring and slow. Puzzles were interesting, style is nice, but it wasn't a game I'd play again

Social Justice Warriors
Not much to say about this game, because there isn't much game there. I hestiate to call it a game, more like experimental social commentary. As someone who enjoys tearing about trolls in the Steam forums with logic and reason, I can appreciate the idea behind Social Justice Warriors, but really I regret spending my dollar.

New IGS deal is UnSummoning: the Spectral Horde. I had never heard of it, but read a few impressions online and it sounds interesting. Essentially it mixes arena shooter combat with Match-3 puzzle elements, making a methodical strategic action puzzle game

UnSummoning: the Spectral Horde - $3.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
screenshot-10.png

http://www.roamingground.com/games/unsummoning/

UnSummoning: the Spectral Horde is an arcade puzzle/shooter for PC, Mac, and Linux. You take on the role of an ineffectual necromancer who has summoned an army of vengeful spirits to wreak havoc upon the world. Unfortunately, they only want to wreak havoc on you! Now you must undo what you have done by gathering the power of magic sigils and using that power to blast the ghouls back to the netherworld.

So I played a few levels of UnSummoning and I'm enjoying it. Basically you're a bumbling necromancer who finds himself being attacked by his own summoned creatures. To survive,
You need to fight off waves of enemies. Enemies come in various colors, and they can only be defeated by attacks of the same color. The floor is covered in colored tiles, and by stepping across like-colored tiles, you charge up your shot. The more tiles you cover, the more powerful your attack. Chains of 5+ give your attacks an area of effect, 15+ make your attack affect all enemies not just those of the same color. Special tiles give you new attacks, like a spinning blade blast or a triple shot

The game is slower paced than your typical shooter. You need to look at the layout, think about where you want to move and which color enemy you want to focus on, all while also avoiding enemies. It becomes quite challenging to chain together lager groups of tiles as more enemies are introduced and the floors before more varied. UnSummoning won't win any awards but it's different and I think it's fun

Voting June!

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

Why?
Because we want to offer people who first step into the thread an easy go-to list for great games. Plus it gives more attention to the titles that really deserve it.

How?
Everyone votes on his top 10 games out of the ones that already have been released AND are mentioned in the OP (So everything in Post 2). I'll tally the results and put the best 5 in the next thread. A minimum voting count of 4 is required. Feel free to vote for games that you deem "important" or the ones that you enjoyed the most. Since this is a rather communicative thread, feel free to include a short description why these games ended up on your list or a "honorable" mention if you feel that one game deserves another mention even though it wont count for your list. That way it would also make it interesting to read which games we should check out that others might have enjoyed. You dont need to "rank" the 10 games. Every list entry gets 1 point for the overall ranking.

When?
This thread is still open until the end of the month, so you can drop your list in here whenever you want. You can also change your list up to the last day. I wont start the count before the last day of the month, so everyone has still time to revise their lists and play some games. Speaking of which, if you dont even KNOW 7 games to vote for, there are plenty free games in the OP to check out. Most of which are rather short too. Use the remaining week to catch up with 1 or 2 titles you didnt get around to yet!

There's no demo? I can't purchase games on Desura.

How did you survive in this thread without ever being able to touch a Desura game? :-o

No Paypal account? Setting one up and connecting it to your bank account isnt really hard. Otherwise, we can work something out eventually, if you want to buy one or more Desura games, you could just gift something on Steam to me eventually.

Oh man! I'm ahead of the game this time. I've actually already played a bunch of the recently released this month. Worm Hunter looks really cool. I'll have to check it out.

The wonders of r/IndieGameSwap :D

I use Visa gift cards for online purchases, not my bank account. Helps me budget myself.

I only have a buck left on my card after all my Summer Sale purchases. I'll probably just get in touch with the developer; it does look like a fun game and I didn't see any reviews online

You dont need a card though if you take up Tomas IndieGameSwap bank :p I am not in a hurry, I can buy you the game and you gift me somethin in 1-2 months or whenever. I am not stingy about that. Maybe you want another 1-2 desura games next month and you'll gift me something afterwards, I really dont mind. It would just be a good idea to try the game before this months end of voting.

Got Brothers today. I'm up to chapter 2.

Did anyone else encounter issues here?

The gate won't open when I turn the crank

I didn't have any problems with that point, but I did have to reload a checkpoint twice due to scripting errors on my playthrough. From what I understand talking to others that game can be a little funky with its programming at times so be prepared to reload if you run into anything else you think shouldn't be happening. I hope a checkpoint reload solves your issue here.

On a more positive note, anyone have any experience with Noir Syndrome? The description on steam makes it sound kind of amazing and its super cheap right now.
