I'm mainly looking forward to whatever crazy twist of an ending they have written for this game. /m-night-shyamalan.jpg

Weird, I actually played some games yesterday. Will be uploading videos but here's some short impressions:

They Bleed Pixels: A bit late to the party on this one, but it recently updated with some balance changes and an easy mode. I really dig the controls, though they're a bit complicated--they require no more buttons than an NES controller but depend on how you're moving and how long you press the button bringing a lot of complexity out of just jump/attack/move. Cool Lovecraftian world, deep scoring system, quite hard but very forgiving (except for the score).

Duck Game: Adult Swim got yet another good one. I don't even like online multiplayer, and was terrible at it, but this game is a blast. Has single player challenges but the frantic online multiplayer is the main thing. Level editor too. Very fast matches (unless your partners get in a stale mate--it could use a time-out function) and once you get in a game you just keep playing on random maps until you chose to (ahem) duck out of the game. It's also the best kind of stupid. There's a quack button.

Here's my Duck Game video. I think this might be the first time I've played online vs multiplayer on my channel and I wasn't even planning on it.

Fragile Soft Machines: A brief, choose-your-adventure sort of thing where you play as a butterfly with a broken wing. There's lots of choices you can make and the game gives you short little prompts to react. It's interesting to see how the narrative shapes, though it's very experimental and the payoff was less than expected. Still a very interesting concept.

Hot Date: Speed dating sim where you chat up a flatshaed pug who has randomized responses to your questions. Pretty fun to play around with, some of the responses had me laughing.

My Garbage Cat Wakes Me Up At 3AM Every Day- a cute joke game, not much more, not supposed to be much more. Reminded me I need to get Catlateral Damage.

Continuing the refund discussion:

Assault Android Cactus on Steam comes with a no questions asked money back guarantee. Love it or get your money back! http://store.steampowered.com/app/250110/
- Haven’t been brave enough to try an early access game yet? Never heard of Witch Beam? Not sure if you like twin stick shooters? No problem.
- In case it’s not clear, storefront refunds are a marketing opportunity. Get out there and let people know they can try your games risk free.

wanna try #HeroSiege? now you can check it out and get #steamrefunds if you dont like it! http://store.steampowered.com/app/269210/ #gamedev #gamemaker
- our sales are going up since the steam refund system. It might be a really good thing after all! #gamedev #indiegamedev

Robert at Zeboyd Games:
For us, Day 1 Refunds > Day 2 Refunds > Day 3 Refunds. They're dropping each day and they're dropping fast. I don't know when the refunds/day will stabilize, but it's way too soon to draw much of any conclusion.
Yesterday was the first day for us that refunds didn't drop from the day before. They didn't go up drastically either (went up by like 2 refunds).

I'm not anti-refund, though the pro-refund arguments have brought out some really nasty anti-dev people.

Don't want to get too worked up about it either way until a couple weeks past. Pretty much every single new feature Steam rolls out is screwed up or abused all to hell for the first week or so then irons out either due to people chilling out or Valve changing stuff.

I'm generally pro-refund. But I gotta admit I am worried at the apparent lack of any real safeguards for developers of games that are under 2 hours in length. It is very easy to see a dark path were shorter games vanish from steam as a result of lost profits from refunds or have to compromise their own design to force themselves to be longer.

I played the ever living poo out of that game, loved it. Finishing it was one of my proudest gaming achievement along with finishing Mass Effect 2 and Halo 3 on the hardest difficulties. Glad to hear it still has some life.

I have to wonder what's actually going on with refunds--from the Octodad numbers it seems like a bunch of skinflint sales-bingers, and the matter is complicated by Valve seemingly ignoring their two week rule. I have to wonder what % of these people actually played the games and if they'll be refund-banned by Valve.

Oh right, They Bleed Pixels is also on sale for 75% off right now with the update. I'll try and go back to finish it but I have a lot of games to look at. Making good headway with 5 games yesterday though 2 were extremely short.
My DRM free to-do folder has 70 games and a few dozen in Steam, I'll never "finish" lol

Sylvio - $12.99 (PC, Mac)
haD7RxM.jpg

http://www.sylviogame.com/

First person horror / adventure game about a ghost recorder called Juliette Waters. She finds herself trapped in an old family park, shut down since a landslide in 1971. Whispers on the recordings give clues on how to progress and solve puzzles. Analyzing the recordings reveals hidden messages, giving pieces of information on the dark story of the park. The cult family Hensons, the siblings, the pesticide factory, the landslide. It’s all connected in the end.
Whispers on the recordings tells Juliette of things in the surroundings to use. It’s up to Juliette to understand why and how she’s supposed to use them. Learn the story by having seances and reading books. Analyze recordings and find hidden messages from the other side. Collect audible words in the radio static. Explore the surroundings of an old family park, left to its demise.

This hadn't been on my radar, but RockPaperShotgun's review made it sound really promising:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/06/09/sylvio-review-horror/
I almost walked away during the opening moments, when Sylvio seems like yet another cobbled together mess of repetitive graphical assets. I figured I’d play until the first jump scare and then quit. Instead, I found a game that uses its limited resources to find clever ways to scare the life out of me. It’s a quiet horror game – an anti-screamer, right down to the calm almost-whispers of the protagonist – and it’s a triumph.

Kholat - $19.99 (PC)
dBLhKTk.jpg

http://kholat.com/

Narrated by one of the most popular British actors, Sean Bean, Kholat is an exploration adventure game with elements of horror, inspired by a true event known as the Dyatlov Pass incident – a mysterious death of nine Russian hikers, which led to countless, unconfirmed hypotheses. The player will plunge directly into the boundless scenery of the inhospitable Ural Mountains with the task to find out what really happened. In the course of events, you may come across more speculations than expected...

Originally announced back in 2011 or 2012! Been such a very long time coming, I'd almost forgotten about it. As soon as I saw the first screenshot though, I instantly recognized the unique transit system.

Funny, I thought the exact same thing, but it couldnt be that long ago, right? 2013 maybe? I remember it popping up in these threads and we started in march 2013.

Got around to Glitchspace again, and idk, I couldn't get into it. I like it a lot but the programming mechanic just isnt as fun as SpaceChem or similar games. For me, it feels harder to grasp than SpaceChem.

Zachtronics is brilliant; somehow he devises systems that are complex and deep and yet easy to understand and learn. The nodes and command lists of Glitchspace are harder for me to learn than SpaceChem's waldos, sync, bond, and so on.

Anyone else feel the same?

I am mega ready for this. It looks so damn good.

I went to The National Videogame Arcade today in Nottingham (which is like the parent branch of Game City) and I'm heading back tomorrow. It is, when Game City isn't on, a mega chilled out space with some arcade cabinets, consoles set up and a cafe. The staff are super nice and the people who hang out there are really welcoming as well.

If any of you guys are UK based (which I don't think you are) you should definitely swing by,

Folks, I don't get my GAF time as much anymore, but as always, good to see the Indie Thread continue to hold the banner high. Been playing Highlands, which is a visually tasty Risk variant. Not hugely complex, but pretty brutal at times. Might be cheap during the sale, but it's of a modest asking price already. Nice, and runs on anything.

We featured that last month actually, but nobody ended up playing it.
Since you just mentioned it though: The dev contacted me for a steam review and gave me 3 additional keys. Anyone who wants a code in exchange for a thread/steam review, just quote this post and I'll pm you a code.

Please only take a code if you actually are interested in playing it and writing your impressions.

Summer Sale starts today. Time to bloat those indie backlogs some more!

There's 38 games on my wishlist but some of those are very specifically "IF this goes on sale for the right amount then maybe"

A lot of them are early access as well so I'm not anticipating big price drops:

Satellite Reign
The Long Dark
GRAV
Curious Expedition
Subnautica
Windward

Those are probably my most wanted ones.

If no-one else wants it I will take it and give it a write up.

I'm not the most eloquent so if there is anyone else that wants it I am happy to step aside.

Sent, and that is fine, not everybody needs to be Pixel-Shakespeare ;)

I've been looking at Duck Game over the last few days and this RPS piece pushed me over the edge: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/06/11/the-absolute-joy-of-duck-game/

Duck Game made me swear at an empty room this morning. Not because one of the other ducks trapped me in a bubble and threw me off the edge of a level (although that did happen), not because a shotgun blasted me backwards through a door in a flurry of feathers (that also happened) and not because I popped on some plate mail only to run into a duck with a magnet, which he used to rip the sword out of my clutches and then clamped the magnet to my armour before lobbing me into a pit (also a thing that happened).

Duck Game made me swear because I couldn’t fucking believe I haven’t been playing it every day since it released. It’s brilliant.

Adult Swim Games has been publishing great stuff!

Chroma Squad is apparently 2,50$ right now in the sale. (couldnt check)

Edit:And gone, the deal was already corrected.

I am about to work on the yearly Summer sale Indie game thread now. If you find interesting deals that are NOT already included here (DO NOT POST IN THAT THREAD), please post them here in the monthly indie game thread, preferably in the following format:

Gamename[./b] - Price (XX% off)
[quote.]Screenshot[./img]
Link[./URL]

Short 2-3 sentence description why people should check it out - No PR copy paste! Personal description.[./quote]
We are going to switch over to the Indie sale thread as soon as I have it up.

I'd also take a new thread name suggestion :p
The last one was "Indie-ana Games and the Temple of Hidden Gems"

Release date: Winter 2014/2015

Aw, too bad Elliot Quest isn't on sale. I'd go pimp the hell out of it or buy some copies to give away.

Only played a little bit of Subnautica but I already think it's better than any other survival game I've played. The alien ocean setting is so so appealing and vastly more interesting than any wasteland or forest or island

It's pretty great, yeah. The atmosphere is second to none. Great sound effects and art design.

I don't have much interest in a survival mode so I've stuck to the exploration rules. I'll probably give survival a go at some point just to see how the economy works. Is that the word? Economy? There are a lot of fish swimming around that clearly serve some kind of purpose but you don't seem to need them in the exploration mode.
