Indie Games [April] Now Voting - Post 635!

Who of you bought the game (Clairvoyance) as well? Anyone who would like to play? The game is async, so there isnt much time needed. The game seems to be pretty interesting, but the servers are rather empty atm (probably because its still in Beta with not much exposure).

I'm always up for a game. It's a small but active community. The first few matches can be discouraging but you learn a lot about the mechanics just through observation.

Bought it last night. The game crashes if you have a controller plugged in (I want to play on my TV, so it's unplayable for me). Lots of bug reports on the GOG forums as well, I'd say wait for a few patches before buying.

Didn't have any problems for me, but was playing with M&KB.

Er on the side of caution, as always.

Apparently, you are going to be my first game since there is no one online to play with? I am "looking for a fight" for over 10 minutes now. Already invited you, so we'll see how I'll do in my first match ;)

I'll invite you too Pylon.

Edit: Who is getting the initiative in a match? Always random at first?

Edit2: There is no forum for this yet, right? I posted some questions on their website in the comments. Hope they read it.

Next, Bloomfairy:

Hm, I was the one who put decided to put it in this thread, so I should like it, right? Yeah... not really unfortunately.

Don't you hate when that happens? ;) I had that happen to me when I hyped the first Assassin's Creed (played 5 min of it in an event and was awesome) and Halo 2, then actually went to play them.

Clairvoyance looks intriguing. I'm not really into strategy games or multiplayer ones, but the cute robot aesthetic along with robo chess and chat is winning me over.

Also, just moved on VESPER.5.

GODDAMNIT. I was too slow to take a screenshot of it, but this game actually rewards you for go off the beaten path apparently. Maybe its even for the better that I didnt get a screenshot, so the mystery is kept intact ;p

The picture was cool to see, but since its a one and done affair, its kinda hard NOT to see it as a metaphor for things you see in life, which will graze your memory for a while and then just leave because, ultimately, its not important enough to stay behind in the long term memory.

Yeah, thankfully that doesnt happen too often, and to be honest... its not like the game doesnt deserve a spot in the OP. Its clunky, and weird, and not what I expected, but from the 10k viewers of this thread, there is probably 1 person who will enjoy it. Its not completely bad, I guess I just didnt have my expectations aligned correctly. Lovely gif again btw. Not all that "clean" because its from a yt vid, but I love these Indie gifs.

Invited Sapient and Pylon, if anyone else reads this, feel free to invite me "Toma" (surprise) as well. I already waited for over an hour now to get a game and still didnt manage to play anything. Guess I'll just wait until tomorrow.

18 Cadence - Interactive story for PC and iPad, free.

http://18cadence.textories.com/home.html

There was a house at 18 Cadence Street. It was built in 1900. It burned to the ground in the year 2000. In between, people lived there: soldiers, mothers, bankers, stoners; people with secrets, with chores, with dreams, with regrets, with too much stuff or not enough, with sleepless nights, with laughter and with each other.

In 18 Cadence, you can explore a century of living and assemble your own story from thousands of narrative fragments. Capture one life or juxtapose people from different eras. Slide, position, and recombine details like magnetic poetry. Decide what's worth telling, and what should be left out. What story will you tell?

Just started, but it's amazing how you can build your own experience, based on those small pieces given by an author and even arrange them in a graphical manner. You can focus on everything you want, it doesn't have to be characters, might as well show, how the house was changing during the century of its existence or tell a sexual driven story from bedroom perspective - the only limit is your imagination.

So. Here's a crazy question. What is the Far Cry 2 of indie games?

Meaning: I kind of just want to run around in a big world and mess up shit and play with the rules without being confined to a narrative or platforming.

Things that I would classify:

Terraria
Minecraft
Factorio
Gnomoria

As I type this, I think I'm just saying: SANDBOX WITH SYSTEMS!!

Give me some recommendations, friends.

You played all these and want another answer, right? Because honestly... Minecraft is probably the best contender, which is also a big reason for its popularity.

I was gonna recommend Miasmata for wanting a hardcore first person survival game with the similar map interface, but then you mentioned that other stuff :P

The player that receives the invite gets the initiative.

The asynchronous pacing means that games can take days to finish, but I like the suspense. It's a nice change of pace.

I tried DreadOut earlier, but I wasn't as impressed for a few reasons. Fatal Frame does something almost surreal with it's atmosphere, and the tension is almost unbearable. This game did give off a certain vibe, similar to Fatal Frame, but it is missing a lot of the subtlety I think. Fatal Frame also builds a dense back-story through many bits of information, which I totally love. All in all, these types of game I have issues with finishing because sometimes it can be too overwhelming, but I didn't get that here. For an indie attempt, it was really technically sound, but it's tough to replace games like Amnesia and Fatal Frame as the scariest games out there. There's just something 'magical' about the Fatal Frame series; this game makes me wish for a FF game on PC now.

I was also browsing indiedb.com and can't believe how many people are making horror games anymore. Too overpopulated, that genre.

Sandbox with systems not on your list:
Planet Explorers (VERY Alpha) - 3D sandbox, somewhat like a sci-fi minecraft, very buggy at this point though
Darkout - can be a bit buggy but decent terraria-like with a bit of a twist about lighting.
Edge of Space - I can only go with what I've read so far, but it looks like a decent Terraria-esque game. I have troubles with creating a login on their website.
Kenshi - also a bit Alpha, but it's a squad-based RPG/RTS hybrid with base-building and a few interesting bits and pieces. Can take a bit to get used to the camera though.

That's about all I have at the moment, Starbound has been announced but it's not out yet, or even in beta so that's a bummer. And I suppose that Cube World also fits into that category somewhat, though it is more of an ARPG with a few sandbox elements.

If you are not board of Minecraft yet, Feed the Beast mod pack is well worth checking out. It adds so much to the base game that it bascailly feel more like a new game then most actual minecraft clones do.

Isnt that a rather big disadvantage? Why would I ever invite people then?

Message I got from the Clairvoyance devs:

Hey man,

For starters, thanks for digging the game!
We are currently working on another game cuz we needed a little break from Clairvoyance and we also wanted to see how the game is doing by itself before we make a final release.

We do have some things planned like the ones you are mentioning but right now there is actually a way to see what players are online if you check out the right tab in the Lobby. There is also a Random Fight Button on that there tab which lets you challenge a random player who is online and it also picks a random map for you.

Its cool that you contacted us directly here on Facebook and maybe we will get a forum up when the game is done. It all depends on how many people play the game I guess. As this game is still in Beta-phase we welcome feedback of all sorts!

We also have plans for a Map Editor but thats abit hush hush at the moment.

Yep, see ya around!

It was a good game. One wrong move at the end there and I would have been toast, lol. Thinking about all the "what if" scenarios is a big part of the fun for me.

PM! Invite me next ;)

And the next with Sapient:

Do you want to keep that just up with the one winning inviting? If you want a few more matches, I wouldnt mind. I invited you next. Let me know at one point if I should stop inviting ;) And yeah, that match showed what I meant with the invited player having a big advantage.

Sure, I'll be back on tomorrow. I'm used to having hours in between each move so it was interesting to have a fast paced game going. People need to start hounding the devs about local multiplayer because it would be a great game for pass and play.

I laughed when I see a grenade stacked on top of another grenade.

That TV replay is a really cool feature. I love that when you pause the player, the camera is still rotating like old Max Payne games.

That moment was so brutal. 2 bombs hitting 3 of my pieces, ouch. The second game went better thankfully. Btw, they also list all the played games and new registrations on their Activity page:
http://www.gameofclairvoyance.com/activity_log

I'll probably create a thread for this, and throw in a small tournament. You need some more players to play this game. Any ideas for a catchy thread title? I was thinking of either referring to the game name (Knowing your enemies move before they do) or a nod to FS (Frozen Blocky Synapse)

I'd go for something like Clairvoyance - The Cutest Robot Chess Deathmatch ever :P

Phew. Finally done with playing Clairvoyance for the day. That was seriously fun. Contender for my top 5 list at the end of the thread for sure.

You can compare this to chess, or Frozen Synapse if you know that game. You are giving orders to your robots and then the actions of both players are being run in turns. Action 1 of player A, then Action 1 of player B, then action 2 of Player A, etcetc. The fun of this kind of game comes from the mind games you are having with your opponents. You can shoot, move, turn and throw bombs and your task is to correctly judge what your opponent might do to conduct the perfect counter attack. The game is not as deep as Frozen Synapse because there are less options and less "fine tuning" needed, but its still highly enjoyable, especially since its also more quicker to play. Biggest drawback: The game does not have that many players so far (since its still somewhat early in development) and really needs some more exposure to build up a decent community. But damn, what is already here, is really fun.

Its basically Frozen Synapse without half an hour of meticulous planning, making for a rather painless, quick and fun experience. I still prefer FS over it, but for $5 this game is definitely a big recommendation for anyone who wants to have some bombing fun! Too bad there arent that many people on the servers now, because the game is rather unknown, but if you have any remote interest in this game, I recommend checking it out NOW, when there are still some GAF members active in the thread to play against.

Spent a touch more time with Signal Ops. Stability hasn't been a problem, really enjoying the endearingly awkward pace it has going on. It's a bit clunky, a bit slow, but I find it strangely beguiling.

It does remind me somewhat of The Sting! on many levels...which might not mean anything to many people. Perhaps just the layout of the environment and the interactions.

$1 nabs you Steam and gog key.
BTA nabs you art off all kinds on the game.

It is a really good platformer. At this price, having both Steam and GOG keys is amazing.

Proun - Ok, this game is really old, so this thread may not be the right place for it, but I just found it on my drive, among other forgotten indies I bought at some point to put them aside after few tries - in this case, I really don't know why, because it's a neat little time killer.

Basically, it's a minimalistic racing game where you rotate the world around you to avoid obstacles, or to be more specific it is you that move around tube shaped track - works well with gamepad. What differentiates it from other titles, are beautiful, abstract visuals - this alone is worth paying minimum $1. Currently there are only five short tracks, plus the user made ones (be sure to check them out), so it's not heavy in content. It has some potential. Maybe, if the game gets more commercial exposure, the dev would continue to support it.

Thanks for posting! Looks interesting.

Wow, that is a very visually striking game. Even I'm tempted and I'm not strongly drawn to reaction racers. Just going through my Desura list and found that I have Wooden Sensai from an indie bundle long ago, but never gave it a go. Might offer up some impressions once I give it a fair go.

Cliffy B just pimped INTRUSION 2 in his blog.

Intrusion3.jpg

I was at the indie games section and I saw a game that looked like some sort of Gunstar Heroes/Treasure type of experience.

tumblr_inline_mklpy7C2SB1qz4rgp.jpg

INTRUSION 2! (I didn’t know there was a first!)

There were giant sprites scaling and flying everywhere. A scene when you’re in this giant box and a huge robot is trying to pry you out of it. It was pretty sweet. Turns out that the entire damned game was put together by one very young quiet (Russian, I believe) guy. I guess he recognized me because when he turned around and let us take the controls he wouldn’t make eye contact and was all jumpy and excited. I realized that this guy and I had more in common than most would think. I made my own platformer when I was roughly his age. (Granted, I had help.)

I came from Shareware.

The original Indie scene.

Oh wow, how did I miss out on this last year? Correcting that mistake now.
Can't really blame anyone for missing out on Indies. The attention most (even the good ones) get is rather laughable overall. Glad to see that this thread corrects that a bit.
