Your thread is the reason I found The Sea Will Claim Everything. Fantastic game. I'm rooting for Ithaka of the Clouds to get its funding and then some. Thank you! ;)

Which I STILL havent bought because there was so much other stuff to play and do on GAF with these Indie threads.

My gf loved the Cat game too though, so I'll pick it up eventually.

So, after my intense love affair with the Slave of God, I decided to delve deeper into the world of Increpare Games, but the guy's just throwing those ideas like a machine gun, so it's kinda difficult to see through his portfolio. Do you have some good ideas, where to start?

Some more recent ones of his I dug

Sorry for neglecting to put more interesting things in here in the last few days ;p I was a bit "busy" with other threads in the meantime. I'll definitely make another screenshot saturday post(s), so I hope there is at least one person looking forward to that.

If you havent seen them yet, there:

Holy crap, I just blew my mind by noticing that Infiniminer (The game Minecraft and the whole hype surrounding it is based on), was made by the guys behind SpaceChem.

SpaceChem devs are even more awesome than I already thought.

Now that was random. OpenRA just released, which plays and looks like the old C&C games. I'll take a look at it later:

http://www.desura.com/games/openra

Oh yeah, and its free. Its basically the MP portion of the old C&C game.

I just played some more, and its really quite good as an MP game. I had fun with it, even though I encountered the occasional bug that annoyed me a bit. Unfortunately, it doesnt offer any SP missions whatsoever, so you basically need to know your way around this game since most people playing it seem to be rather good at it.

So RPS did a review of Driftmoon that inspired me to pick it up and it is pretty good. It seems a little odd and janky and it looks like a Net Yaroze game. But it is filled with a great level of personality and the way your character sprouts lines about the goings on really helps give the game a lot of life. If you are an top down RPG and adventure game fan and want to play both those genres in the same game then check it out. Tis rather good.

Also insane level of modding support.

That game is really tempting me. I dont even know whats keeping me back. How deep is the fighting/upgrade/loot system?

Do you need the original game files to play that? Those are the original graphics...

Yeah, they actually dl the original game files as soon as you start the game. Was RA made freely available by EA or something? Seems like they did a current PC overhaul for working MP with the provided assets.

Edit: Yeah, apparently RA is just freeware now:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/ea-giving-red-alert-1-away-for-free

Not sure how they went about reusing the assets, but I guess its fine if its a non-commercial game?

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Ah, I forgot Red Alert was freely available now. I'm not interested in multiplayer though to be honest.

Yeah, I am a bit disappointed as well. Was hoping for some simple campaign maps or scenarios at least.

Hopefully, they'll add that at one point.

Not to mention that this setup basically means only players that already know how to play the game well actually have a chance online. Although its still nice that someone took on the job to make this game available on current PCs again.

That game is really tempting me. I dont even know whats keeping me back. How deep is the fighting/upgrade/loot system?

It isn't terribly deep. The focus of the game is on the world presentation and odd folk you meet. You do do a bit of stat distribution and have a skill tree but the core RPG elements are fairly stripped down.

Ok guys, can anyone recommend some interesting co-op indie games? I had a look through the OP and they mostly seem like single player experiences. Also I tried going through Desura, I like tying my games to accounts, and honestly I have no idea how anyone browses that site!

Alright, going to dig into The Pit tonight.

And I just read that Factorio will be up for prepurchase on Monday!

Alright, finally put a few minutes into Factorio and it gets a definite recommendation:

Factorio - Free Demo (PC)
screenshot-3.jpg

http://www.factorio.com/

This game shows endless promise. I am kinda hyped after playing the demo. Unfortunately, there is no purchaseable full version yet, but oh boy. I'll buy this day one. Its basically an RTS mixed with SpaceChem. In the beginning you'll run around gathering resources. Then you'll use those resources to buy simple mechanisms, and THEN with those mechanism you'll create mechanism that help you automatising everything. The system is so damn cool. Give the demo a try.

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Just a heads up, if you have any involvement with a project to let people know in the future.

It was pretty obvious from name/link combination, but yeah, you are right. People should definitely make it clear when posting about their own projects.

Alright, busied myself with Sword of the Stars: The Pit, for a while if anyone wants some impressions:
Its a very competent roguelike in a sci-fi setting that basically does nothing wrong. You got a shit ton of stuff to find and use, skills you can improve on by using and levelling up. Random Alien gadgets, traps, recipes, a working targetting system. The only problem I had with it, is that its less fun than Dungeons of Dredmor. I think DoD pretty much nailed the progression and versatility through the skill system. Other than that I severely missed a mini-map and the rooms and levels all felt way too similar. The big random hook here are rare alien gadgets that you can find, but in the end the rooms just all feel too similar. Not to mention that I am not a huge fan of the procedural generation of the room arrangement they used here.
That sounds a bit mean, but the genre is really full of great games and a game needs to do something to give me an incentive to play THAT game instead of the 100 other good alternatives. One thing this game did rather well was the loot aspect. I did feel like I was filling up my inventory nicely with stuff, ammunition, weapons and food/medical items. Overall, I'd say its something people who always felt like they missed the Sci-Fi in their roguelikes should check out. For all the others, there are better alternatives.

Just been checking out Avant-Garde it's a work in progress at the moment but it's a very interesting concept.

Avant-Garde is a game where you play as an artist in 19th century Paris. Create paintings, meet artists like Monet, Picasso and Dali, participate in artistic movements such as impressionism and surrealism and even create your own movements!

REALLY has potential.

My name is Jean Paul and I am an artist.
I need to start work on some art but I only have 62 francs for materials.

CYnXrBq.jpg

Maybe if I use pencil and paper that will save me some money for a drink in the cafe. Total cost of material, 45 francs.

6PgKlx9.jpg

Which leaves me with 17 francs, not enough for a drink.

X9hwttv.png

I think I may pop to the café and see who is there.

62uxUTA.jpg

Monet is here! I have seen and admired his work, maybe I should introduce myself?

EF4tHpm.jpg

DAMN! What a time to be 3 francs short, I could have bought Monet a drink and he could have taught me something. We will meet again until then I better go back to the Atelier.

7Z2rlzE.jpg

Now time to finish my work. It looks like I may have a buyer as well, 55 Francs. I suppose I am good enough to make 10 francs from one piece of art. I need to study more and drink less!

i8iy3gN.png

Need to improve on my Drawing Copy for the moment, I can save some money for a drink later that way.

tRI7NQP.jpg

And that's a little bit of the game right there.
You get the picture? BOOM BOOM!

I actually played that as well. I really liked the beginning where it seemed to matter what you actually do. Once I had 10 stats and was able to paint Masterful paintings every single time, there was no point to it anymore though. The game felt rather pointless due to that in the end.

They could maybe throw in some nervous breakdowns or real world events that affect your character and their stats. Must admit after playing it for a bit longer the same happened to me, I started rattling out good enough pieces of work and sell, sell, sell and study, study, study.
Still think it has a good idea in there though, something that hasn't been dealt with. I'm thinking something like, Sim Gallery but without the DRM.

I put some time into this, and it was great. I studied Impressionism/Post-Impressionism in the past few years in school and there was a lot of great attention to detail in the game. Can't wait to see it fleshed out.

Yeah, as I said, I liked playing it initially as well. Its just missing an end and more weight on your decisions. It also didnt really make a difference to me whether I won the art thing or not, same with the art directions you can invent yourself. I was at least expecting that the taste for the tournament guys would change eventually as we progressed through the eras, but nothing happened. Its also still missing a risk/reward balance to make it actually interesting. Unfortunately, I am not sure how to even accomplish that other than only having a limited amount of time so that you might "die" before creating your masterwork.

Oh and yeah, creating a "masterwork" should be more.. meaningful. Like when you create a masterwork of a certain style, maybe the tournament guys get more open to that style or something?

Sounds really great, goinf to download the demo right now. Thanks for the heads-up!

You might want to browse Co-Optimus, particularly:

Not that I've read any of these articles myself, but their focus is on indie co-op, so...

Alright, busied myself with Sword of the Stars: The Pit, for a while if anyone wants some impressions:

Thanks a lot for the impressions; the game had caught my eye as well, partly because of the SciFi setting. But I have Dredmor pretty much untouched, so if this is inferior, it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to get into yet another roguelike. :D

This may sound like I am just exaggerating, but I am really, really, really looking forward to this. Too bad no one else in this thread even noticed me posting about it :p I sent it to Pylon at least, hopefully he gets to check it out.

Yeah, it doesnt make much sense to pass up DoD and get this if you already have DoD but didnt play it properly yet. Out of all the modern "classic"-style Roguelikes (As in not FTL), DoD is still the easiest accessible and most fun.

Ok, I actually watched the video on their main website and I'm very intrigued. I'm usually not into games like this, but I make exceptions for certain ones. Thanks for the posting about it!

Not to play it today, I mean, because it's 2:30AM here and I can tell booting up this game will mean kissing any semblance of sleep schedule goodbye. :D
I'll give it a go tomorrow, but it looks seriously amazing. Also as addicting as crack. :D

Please do try the demo :) It could still be not too much to your liking, so its great that people can try before they buy. Also I should note that people should finish the 3 levels in the demo, because the first level alone isnt representative of the game at all. If you guys have any questions, throw it in here! I am always hawkeying this thread. As soon as the Alpha goes up, I'll create a thread for it.

Haha, 2:30 AM is a bit late for that (same time here btw, same time zone? Where are you from?), but the demo isnt too bad yet. You only have 3 levels, and you should be able to finish it within 30-60 minutes.

The alpha however (which you can buy next monday) will include this:

The game will be released in its current state as an alpha in mid March 2013. The alpha will be available to all backers. The alpha is already playable and contains following things (however not graphically finished or polished):

2 extra campaign levels in three difficulty settings
singleplayer freeplay (couple of hours playing on a procedurally generated map)
researching technologies for unlocking recipes or improving existing structures
programmable signals to get fine grain control over your factory
logistic robots to ease transportation in big factories
more game content
assembling machines to automatically craft things
transport belts to ground to allow belts crossing
filtering inserters
laboratories to perform research
steel processing
entities variations (chests, inserters, etc.)
...
more weapons (flamethrower, rocket launcher, landmines)
map editor
lua scenarios scripting
moderate modding support (all game element properties are defined as data)

I mean the included modding, map editor and scenario support and the freeplay map will definitely melt time away. People that loved SpaceChem should feel rather at home since I got the impression that it tickled a similar fancy. Best description I could come up with so far is MinecraftXSpaceChem.

..I mean, how did you not already know this? lol. sorry

zachtronics is awesome. too bad ironclad tactics looks a bit pants, but it might still turn out ok of course. I just have immediate negative reactions to most video card games, or card video games. but I wish they could do something incredibly brilliant like spacechem again. of course, even spacechem had a couple of games building up to it, which were pretty similar. and I guess learning from experience or iteration there, that's why spacechem is so good. but I never played those and went straight to spacechem, so they don't exist. I mean, making something as brilliant as spacechem again right off might not be possible, in a relatively short dev cycle. and they probably can't afford to go throguh that multi-game process without releasing anything. hehe.

Yeah, makes me feel pretty bad when hyping up these games and then noticing I dont know any backstory. Kinda weird to miss this. I'll look into their other games now, and I LOVE card games, so its seems like Zachtronics might make another game for me? ;p

Random aside, did I dream about that or did someone say Monaco releases next month? :-o Need to search some official statement for that.

Developer said game is in final cert with MS and won't release the game on PC til the XBLA is good to go.
Cert can be anytime between 4-6 weeks, so maybe end of April?

Oh man. I cant believe that game finally releases. This game is in development and on the hype train since 2009.

Only Indie Game I can think of that is even LONGER in development is The Witness since 2008. Anyone topping that?

OK, just spent an hour or two with the demo (which I finished). AMAZING and insane game, exactly as I imagined watching the video.

The demo was amazing for me. I only missed one thing... which I realized was there all along when I saw factories of other people in the forum; I missed a "material distributor" that allowed you to feed several machines or conveyor belts from a single source or conveyor... not realizing that setting loader arms to the sides of conveyor belts (rather than at the end) will do exactly that.

The alpha however (which you can buy next monday) will include this:

Depending on how much they ask for it, I will buy it outright (to support them) or wait for the full game. It's definitely something I want.

That's a pretty accurate description; I would describe it as Don't Starve x SpaceChem, but Don't Starve already has many elements from Minecraft.

I also got to rethink several aspects of "my" factory until I reached the end of the demo. But I think thats great! Factorio has a 64 Bit version? You don't see that every day with games.

Yup, and Mac and Linux. Thanks for reminding me about that btw. Will make sure to put that into the OP of the thread for Factorio tomorrow.

Germany! Didnt realize some regions in Spain have the same timezone that we do.

Pretty much all regions except for the Canary Islands. To be fair, I'm sure that over 50% of the German population on Spanish soil is in the Canary Islands, what with their awesome tropial weather and all...

I just reloaded my last stage save, dismantled the radars, and played around for a bit. I got to use all the stuff I hadn't needed before, like the subteranean pipes, and the assemblers. Most cool of it all, I made an assembler build ammo clips, then I transported and autoloaded those into my automated turrets so that they never ran out of ammo. I think my base was fully automated with that, potentially lasting until resources ran out (which could be hours). So freaking awesome. I also went to explore the rest of the map, learning about creeper spawners and found some alien artifacts that I have no clue what are for.

10€ for the smallest tier (They'll offer Kickstarter/Indiegogo tiers), and I was actually thinking of something like Don't starve too, but I tried to keep it more ... universally understandable ;) Dont Starve is a "tad" more obscure than Minecraft.

I'll decide whether to buy the Alpha or wait for the final release depending on how complete the former is, then. Thanks for the heads up!

I think my base was fully automated with that, potentially lasting until resources ran out (which could be hours). So freaking awesome. I also went to explore the rest of the map, learning about creeper spawners and found some alien artifacts that I have no clue what are for.

I'll decide whether to buy the Alpha or wait for the final release depending on how complete the former is, then. Thanks for the heads up!

Well we already know whats included in the alpha as I quoted somewhere above:

But yeah, dont worry. I'll make sure to shout at GAF loud enough if the Alpha is as fun and content rich as I hope and sort of expect it to be atm.

Btw, this was my initial setup for the last level:
