DoodleCat gonna be in final game?

I can't decide whether to play the proto or just try to forget about the game until 2018. I've seen the vids and I might get too hype if I play it.

Glad to see the anime opening goal is finally reached! <3

Now we can ask the tough questions (that aren't "who is the studio?"):

How long is the OP budgeted to be? 60 seconds? 90 seconds? 150 seconds?
How much of that time will be spent with the cast running? Will they be running through an open field with/without more characters as a backdrop?
How many panning and/or rotating camera shots can we expect?
How many zoom shots, especially into eyes, can we expect?
How hard is the wind going to be blowing and in which direction(s)?
How many naked ladies (with tasteful obstruction or as silhouette of course) will there be?
Speaking of silhouettes and shadows, we can expect them to leave their mark on the Op of course no?
How many symbolic still shots can we expect?
Will there be a sunrise in the OP? A sunset? Both?
How many symmetrical shots featuring opposing or related characters and concepts can we expect? I assume Ajna vs her Heruka form has to be one no?
What kind of flowers can we expect to see thrown about? I'm hoping for something more original that roses and cherry blossoms!
What JPOP group will be singing the thematically inappropriate OP song that's only there to sell CDs for the music label that's part of the production committee of the show game

:P #Kappa

Seriously though (I'm still actually curious how long the OP is supposed to be), I hope you guys do what you think it best but try to make it something that really leaves an impression. Something memorable. A recent example of some anime openings that really blew me away were for the Jojo TV series. If you're a first time viewer, all you see is swag incarnate. If you are actually familiar with the manga though, the referenced material is through the charts. I think it would be cool if this was an OP that was cool at the onset but gained extra value after you completed the game. You have to do it in a way that isn't super spoilerifferic though (the Jojo OPs succeed in that regard expect for the last part of the Battle Tendency opening). The below videos go into great detail dissecting these OPs. I'm sure there is something you could learn in there (and in turn work with anime studio X to make a reality):

Jojo OPs for Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency
Jojo OPs for Stardust Crusaders

That Youtube channel actually does a pretty good breakdown of several major anime openings (I just thought the Jojo overviews were the best and most relevant) and I'm sure there is a lot you could learn from that (assume you aren't already familiar with a lot of these tricks and techniques) so if you have time I'd give a lot of them a watch.

EDIT: ayyyy lmao just found this video - Every Anime OP Ever Made. I'm not going to say avoid using some of the tropes on display there because many are great/proven filmography techniques but I think its better for the game if its OP wouldn't just get lost in the shuffle of that group.

Trying to get authorization to at least give a hint about the studio, but they're being pretty difficult. :\

Really excited that we got the animu, though!

I assume they've signed a contract (or something to that effect at least) saying they are willing and able to do the work and now you've secured the funds to actually pay them. I'm befuddled. What do they gain hiding their identity for so long? *scratches head*

Did you get the TOSE of anime studios or what? =P

Regarding the further InDemand goals, would it be possible to give them individual deadlines? I.e. a goal must be reached before this date, if it isn't the goal is replaced with the next one still possible at the give time? You already said the goals are sorted in the order how early funding needs to be secured to start the work on them, and an approach like the above would make the goals more like individual funding drives with an own clear end each.

Unfortunately, this is extremely typical behavior for Japanese companies. So as frustrating as it is, we expect this kind of thing.

Any kind of deadlines for that are a long ways out, and still somewhat flexible. So not sure they would really drive anything, since they are like a year or more out.

So someone at L0 was a Star Wars fan? :P

Here's Ren
iesrmlesutrssu6sgaqy.png

A master of his unique weapon, a poison-bladed chain scythe he calls "Fang", Ren's incongruous beauty belies his violent nature. Many rumors surround this mysterious assassin, but the facts are few. Though known to have cleaned up messes for the ruling class of the Jade Empire, mercenary work is not beneath him - if one has need of him, and can locate him, he can be bought. And of course, there is the signature forked tongue he gives to each and every victim.

Past those scant few details, little is known. Rumored to strike with the speed of a cobra and to be impervious to heat and cold, there are those who whisper of an unholy union of human and snake. Some say he waits within the shadows, biding his time until the perfect moment, while others maintain that he approaches his victims in broad daylight, unconcerned with any defenses. He is said to kill for pleasure, to kill for greed, or to kill in an attempt to sate the void inside his soul.

Despite the varied speculation, on one point the stories all agree: a bite from Ren's Fang is always fatal.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll get back to you with these kind of ideas in 20 months or so then. ;) Season's greetings!

If true then I suppose naming the studio isn't all that necessary anymore, sure it'll generate some amount of hype but knowing this we can be reasonably sure whatever they put out would be more than adequate quality. Probably.

Yeah, my hope is that when we can announce it, it'll get some more people to check out the prototype and campaign and maybe help us get to the Full VO stretch goal.

Since you still can't talk about the studio, can you maybe talk a bit about what to expect from the opening? Expected length, will it feature all the characters, what's the targeted balance between introduction cuts and action cuts, why did you go with Titmouse for the storyboarding and direction instead of going all in with Japanese staff, etc. Are there also any plans to specifically request animators to be attached to the project, or are you leaving that entirely up to the anime studio? It'll also be nice to hear what sort of inspiration is being drawn for the opening - the more popular montage style opening, or something a bit different? Any decision on the music selection yet? Is there even budget for a vocal song?

Thanks!

Hard to know how to answer some of these before we're actually doing it, but here's what I know so far.

1. Aiming for 2 to 3 minutes, probably somewhere right in the middle.

2. There will be a limit on the number of characters, but we don't know what that will be yet. More characters means more pre-pro time, etc.

Might be possible to do a cheap line-up where it just flies past all the characters at some part, which likely wouldn't count. The limit is only on characters that need to be animated.

3. Balance of intros/action will likely be determined by the studio, number of characters, etc.

4. We went with Titmouse because they're local, and it'll also let us do some documentary-style stuff that people are likely to be interested in. They're also Skullgirls fans, apparently!

But the main thing was them being local. Iterating on storyboards on the other side of the world through e-mail was going to be a nightmare, so this will greatly speed up iteration time and, presumably, quality.

5. We have preferences for specific directors, but ultimately that'll be up to the studio and their schedule.

6. The initial inspiration was a Tales-like opening, but I don't think we're tied to any kind of format and will just try to plan out the best thing with can with Titmouse. I'm sure Alex has lots of ideas forming already.

7. Music is up in the air. Kikuta sounds interested in scoring something, possibly orchestral. But once everything is in motion on the animation itself, I'd like to at least look into / price out a song.

My personal dream singer/composer would be Maaya Sakamoto, BTW. But pretty sure that will never happen even though I think she'd be into Ajna, the tone of the game, etc.

Thanks for all the answers. I didn't think of the documentary aspect regarding Titmouse. Definitely a plus for those interested in Behind the scenes stuff. Doing the same with a Japanese studio when you're not located in Japan could be a mess. Lol.

Time to start another Indiegogo campaign for the $$$$$! :D

I feel like if we were to try to do the storyboards remotely, the best we could do would be a series of water drops and upward sun flares. Maybe a static image of Ajna at the end before a final upward sun flare.

To be fair, you could just compile all your character and background design work into a huge folder, mail it to Japan, hire Tensai Okamura and Masahiro Ando, and tell them "we want something like the Wild Arms 2nd Ignition OPs".
