inFAMOUS - The oFFicial Thread

Everytime I read the Eurogamer, I get the sense that they've only given it a 7/10 cause they really enjoyed the game but hate the flaws in the game so much giving it a 7 would have motivated the team to iron them specific flaws completely for the next iteration of Infamous.
That's how I feel about Bionic Commando, actually. I really love certain aspects of the game, but there are just too many problems for my tastes and I could not award it a high score as a result.

Too bad your logic does not follow with most of the other 9s and 10s that they give, unless you think those games have nothing to improve. The reviewers job is to make a recommendation, not give a message to developers. A 7/10 says "it's ok" when we know by now (demo + reviews) the game is among the best this gen.

A litte bit off topic: "It's ok" should be a five, across the board. "It's bad" should be <5 and "it's good" > 5.

There was a gaming magazine in germany in the late eighties/early nineties, it was called "Power Play" (it hat a sister magazine in the nineties that was called "Videogames"), that used the 0-100% scala exactely like that - ie a game that scored 70-80% was a really good game, a game that scored 80-90% was brilliant and a game that scored >90% was a masterpiece.

Games that scored > 90% were for example Ultima Underworld, Ultima 6, Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario 64, Zelda - A link to the past.

It was a great magazine. Nowdays, everything that scores sub-8 is utter crap, 8-8.5 is fairly good, 8.5-9 is good and 9+ is very good.

This defies the very meaning of having a scala and could very well be replaced by a 4-star-system.

This is a completely different topic that's been discussed a thousand times, my friend.

I hate to say it but anyone else think the EB exclusive blades sound bad ass? I'm definitely looking forward to it, I just hope it doesn't imbalance things.

They definitely do. I wasn't going to get it from Gamestop but I found an old Edge card with like $27 on it, so I kind of had to go through with that. Plus there's an actually decent Gamestop around me

Question about the inFamous soundtrack, if I download it from PSN would it come with anything extra? The reason I am asking is because if I download it from itunes it comes with a digital booklet.

Just picked up my code from gamestop. Woot! I didn't get burned.

Did they even look at the upgrades available for the zap attack? The zap attack will replenish your electricity AND health. Fact.

O RLY? Lets take a simple example from the game. I had to kill a certain number of baddies who had taken over a building. In which other game can I snipe the rocket launcher guy from afar, then sneak over rooftops to get onto a roof of a much taller building, jump and glide to the roof of the enemy building, crash to its roof with a thunder drop while throwing rockets on the road in front of it, throw grenades into an alley while running to its opposite side, then using a shield while I clamber onto a streetlight and alternately zapping the remaining few enemies.

I have actually done that sequence in a different side mission. inFAMOUS has more freedom of platforming and shooting than 90% of games out there. Fact.

Several upgrades can completely change the way your powers behave, as well as the way you play the game. Enemies might float in the air, so while earlier you were blasting away at them from a concealed position, now it makes more sense to be on rooftops in the open so you have better shooting position. It might give you more electricity or health. It might give you more XP, as well as positively affect your karma. The rocket launcher upgrade will 100% change how you use it. Earlier I had to be in the open to use it, but after its upgrade, I can afford to be more sneaky as I have another way of making it hit the enemies. For Eurogamer to suggest that upgrades MOSTLY (nice qualifier, though I wish they'd sometimes use less than usual number of 50 in a 2 page review) lead to just an upgrade in power or breadth is wrong. Fact.

Running out of Ammo? Firing with a popgun? What game did they play? And if they played inFAMOUS, how badly did they play it? Its like they dont know what strategy is... Some enemies require more firepower, so you have to position yourself where there are more sources of electricity... It might be a bad position, but you wont find yourself without electricity. You might find a great position to take everyone out from, but if there arent any streetlights/rooftop generators etc around, you'll be dead pretty quickly. There is a trade off which you have to make... You have to think and adapt to the environment as well as the enemy type. IMO that leads to good gameplay. Fact.

But apparently if you are Eurogamer, you can get stuck in a horrible position AND not have any electricity... and then call it the game's fault. :lol :lol
Great post!

Which is exactly why i gave away my blades code....I don't want some ridiculously overpowered weapon at the beginning of the game that makes it too easy...

I like the sewer sections - it's like classic platforming :)

Hah, I was thinking the same thing. They are really short, and certainly not difficult, but they are a fun change of pace (and you always get a new power).

iamcool388: You're right on. Like I said earlier, they somehow missed out on a lot of gameplay elements which they absolutely should have come across if they played all the way through. Some of their info is just plain incorrect.

Guys, does anyone know if UK retail version of inFamous will include european mainland subs?I know UK version will have just 3 languages spoken, english, portoguese and russian, but, as I'm italian, and as I'm going to buy the game from an uk retailer, I'd like to know if it has italian subs at least.

Yep I actually look forward to them. A tiny bit annoyed that the demo includes many of the powers that you earn throughout the game. Spoiled the surprise a little.

The GT review has put me over for this one. I wasn't planning on picking it up just yet, but looks like that has changed. I'll be playing this while I'm in Jamaica next week.

You can buy it in Italy and the download the English language patch.

For your question, dunno.

So what do you guys think about the in-game acting animation? I think it's pretty bad. I mean the lip-synching isn't great - but I watched a guy crying about a dead person and he just lifted his hand to his brow in sharp jagged movements. Was odd and a bit distracting from what he was actually saying.

If I was in Jamaica I would not be playing any games, unless it involves me running after half naked Jamaican twinks.

Yeah this is not a strong point of the game judging by the demo. Pedestrians in general are bizarrely animated and just bug me out, cutscene or not. It's like they're spindly robot people. And when I see a guy kneel down on the sidewalk to dramatically punch the ground and cry out his agony for the fifth time in two minutes I just wanna run up and kick him in the middle of his face. When I do and then revive him cause I feel sad for him lying there writhing in pain he gets up and runs away in this goofy ass huddled runwalk which makes me wanna run up and kick him in the back of his face. So the whole harsh, hopeless despair thing they're going for with the NPC's doesn't really do anything for me.

so, are those beta keys available to the limited edition??
Can only assume that they aren't. If you want to make sure you can always ask them. But then they probably won't get back to you until you're no longer guaranteed a code.

Personally I don't really care. Ultimately came to realize the insanity of considering paying £6 for basically prettier boxart.

Okay, I've been chugging away at the game for a couple days now, and I have a few thoughts. Spoilers for, quite literally, the first ten seconds of the game. Most people wouldn't view this as a spoiler, but it was a pleasant surprise, so I'll tag it to keep it from the eyes of people who would like to be pleasantly surprised.

I really love the complete lack of main menu. You load up the game, and the moment you hit start, the game takes off running. It's almost as if pressing start is the first move you perform rather than a UI interaction.

I also love that when you load up the game, it jumps straight from the PS3 menu to your last save -- no mucking around with menus. If I only have a couple minutes to play, this is a godsend.

Its very nice. :D

I'm an LE whore but i want Uncharted.

What is the difficulty like in the game? I've been looking for something that would try my single player chops for a while now and haven't really found it.

Well I don't have the full game yet but I have heard a wide range of opinions on the difficulty from the demo. Some found it somewhat difficult on easy, I didn't think it was that bad on Hard.

I haven't played through the whole thing, but I've seen my fair share of deaths. That said, it does an excellent job with autosaving, and most battles that give you a little trouble at first are usually manageable if you're a little more cunning in your approach. So, it's not a cakewalk, but never really gets so hard that you're frustrated. At least, this has been my experience so far. I'm playing on normal.

The game is actually dynamic. It even suggested me to switch to hard (you can allways switch difficulty on the fly, even during missions). The pacing in the game is amazing for a sandbox game. I think inFamous will challenge both novice and pro gamers.

I wonder if we'll need to play through the game twice in order to get all of the trophies. Based on the demo...I'll want to play through at least twice anyway!

I don't know maybe it's just the American educational system, which operates on a ten point scale. I don't know how grades work in other countries, but if you get a 7/10 on a test, it is considered slightly above average and you are unlikely to get into a University.

Any game that gets multiple 7's is pretty much a bad game, and anything below a 7 means the game is basically a failure. That is why you see games scored on 7-10 scale on most sites, and most of the current games that take 3-4 years to develop and 20 something million to develop are deserving of a 8.

6's and 7's should be for games that are rentals, crappy ports, or bad sports title 2009.

For me, I'm not concerned with the review, as I usually disagree with EG. I'm just fascinated by the idea of varying ten point scales and how a 7 is "good" as opposed to barely above average.

Maybe I'm not thinking straight, but in what other field or sport is a 7/10 good? Certainly not in gymnastics, the dunk contest, or anything I can think of.

How about 7/10 is good at Eurogamer? You ever think of that one?

I read or heard somewhere that you'll have to play it through twice (once as the hero and again as the villian) to get all the trophies. I can't seem to recall the source right now - it might have been the gametrailers review.
