Inquirer: Nintendo sues porn user for listing Zelda as an interest

The chaps at Perkins Coie law firm are unhappy that a registered member of the SuicideGirls site, a chap by the name of Runelateralus, has listed in his 'Interests' bio that he likes Metroid, Zelda and F-Zero - all Nintendo games. Nintendo is unhappy that its intellectual property is being used in conjunction with a site that is sexually explicit. Poor old Runey, it appears, simply wanted other porn viewers to know his gaming habits.

hahahaha...kiddy

I bet most of their 'adult' fans are knee deep in pornography.

I haven't read anymore into it, but if that story is absolutely true (with no other strings attached -- and I have a feeling that's not the case), then Nintendo is going to lose.

But I have a feeling there's more to the story if Nintendo went out of its way to file this.

Nintendo retains lawyers on a kind of autopilot who search for misleading links by doing simple trawls and even Google searches. They send reams of Cease and Desist orders to likely sites - say a porno site advertising Zelda porn. But the process is largely idiot, automated and very scattershot. Anyone who has read a legal document will immediately realize that law firms are not staffed by rocket scientists. This is a mistake (one of thousands) that will simply go away.

For the record, you can say what the fuck you like about Zelda as long as you don't try to sell it. Freedom of speech AND fair use apply.

Nintendo apologizes to Suicide Girls!
Nintendo sent the email below to the good people at Suicide Girls. Background here and here.

Hello,

We would like to apologize to you and to those who frequent the suicidegirls.com website for inadvertently contacting you about a fan posting on the website.

We know that many of our fans are old enough to make their own choice about what they want to view on the Internet. We value the support of our fans and we respect their decisions. The letter was sent as part of an ongoing Nintendo program to aggressively protect our younger consumers from the hundreds of sexually-explicit sites each year that use Nintendo properties to attract children. We are proud of our efforts in this area. Unfortunately, the site posting identified in our letter was targeted by mistake.

As a gesture of goodwill, we would like to offer you (and RuneLateralus) a free Nintendo video game system and game of your choice. (...)

In addition, we would appreciate it if you could provide us with contact information for RuneLateralus, or have him contact us directly, so that we may apologize to him. We would be glad to send him a game and system of his choice through you as well, since we do not have his contact information.

Sincerely,
Christie Hamilton

It's a trap! RuneLateralus is going to get his ass kicked by some hired muscle. Then Yamauchi will steal his porn access.

Dammit, now I'm wishing I had gone to porn sites and talked about Nintendo games. A free system and game, crap.

The whole situation is quite pathetic and really embarrassing for Nintendo...

Or it would be, if Nintendo were actually involved. If anyone actually knew the details of the story, the only involvement Nintendo has is apologizing on behalf of their overzealous law firm.

doesn't matter. nitnendo is guilty by association, which is why we see the quick responce trying to smooth everything over.

As Nintendo explained, it was a misunderstanding caused by search engine results.

In my opinion N's work in trying to remove names of its games and IP from porn sites is commendable work, when the names are just being used to spoof search results. Of course, when they are wrong and the names are not exploited, it looks bad - but with this Suicide Girls case they did well with the compensation and apology.

Anyway, I think it's better for everyone if kids don't end up at Captain Anal Paradise when looking for hints for competing level 4-2.

what a bunch of retards Nintendo's law firm and customer service department are. Sure, the law firm messed up initially. However, having the law firm just send out an "we investigated the issue further and do not have any claims anymore, carry on" message would have been better than arousing even more attention by sending free games to porn site users.
