I spent far too many of my younger days following the Grateful Dead to hypocritically mock someone else's musical fandom. They seem like friendly people. But, just like everyone said about me and mine, they're kind of dirty and smelly.

Edit: Are they actually violent? I thought they had a "family" vibe. I am more afraid of metal fans (and I was also a metalhead).

From my experience, metalheads are mostly pretty welcoming and nice. I don't really know any "angry at the world" metalheads. Most of them just want to chill with a beer/joint and talk about favorite guitarists. Probably helps to have an outlet for your aggression like a loud ass metal concert.
