GAF's Pleasant Genius
This week, besides from installing the NoScrip extension for Firefox ( https://addons.mozilla.org/extensio...tion=firefox&category=Popular&numpg=10&id=722 ), which is very useful helping Firefox to be more protected from Internet Worms, I decided to patch some holes with Internet Explorer, which many applications (worms included
) in your computer might use to go on the web to retrieve and exchange information without you ever seeing IE opened (IE being integrated in Windows XP is no big secret
).
I set Internet Explorer's proxy to 127.0.0.1 (loopback address) for all protocols and then set some exceptions to the rule, a list of trusted addresses to bypass the proxy (not to use it to access the Internet). I can get to Windows Update, to hotmail's site, to msn.com, to windows.com and comedycentral.com (slight problem with streaming "some" WMV content with Firefox after NoScript is installed
... whoops...), but MSN Messenger won't log in.
MSN Messenger has two options to connect you to the Messenger network, to authenticate your Passport, that is 1.) through its own TCP/UDP ports (Windows Firewall is making an exception for MSN Messenger and I do not block its outcoming ports only incoming ports) 2.) through a HTTP connection.
MSN Messenger it's choosing 2.) here and the problem becomes IE's Proxy. Apparently I have not yet allowed in the "whitelist" of exceptions ALL the web addresses MSN Messenger needs to visit to fully authenticate me and MSN Help (I am at my second e-mail trying to get the issue answered instead of being side-stepped).
Does someone happen to know that list of addresses, has had to solve this problem before... has a hint ?
