Introduction to MOBAs

I can't even tell what's going on it's just a mash of colors and effects. I think one of the reasons why I gave up on League but manage to enjoy Dawngate is because the art is more clear and the effects and fights have been more readable. The only game I find more frustrating to look at is HoN
That's exactly how I feel, I don't even know what I'm looking at half the time.

Well, it wasn't nearly as big, that's for sure.

Every Moba is like that. Until you know what the skills and champions/heroes do it's going to look like a mess.

Im watching 5v5 shit go down and its boring as hell. Some blue spikes and a little red glowy shit and the fight is over.

That comment was me talking about League of Legends and how visually underwhelming it is :/

Wow in retrospect its scary how my description of a boring LoL fight so closely mirrors a glorious Dota fight. Werid

Hell I played Dota 1 for years. Then going to HoN/Dota 2 I was still lost as hell. I knew every skill from every champion, but damn did team fights confuse the shit outta me still.

There's definitely a barrier to learning LoL but once you're into it it's the best eSport to watch imo. I don't necessarily buy that lack of intuitiveness goes against games like LoL. American football is an extremely unintuitive sport yet it's the most compelling show on television for Americans.

If I ever make 1 person mad because they're forced to look at my cargirl Drow after I killed them, it was a dollar well spent.

Now #FreeAlpineUrsa.

Did anyone see the new champion profile for Blue Beetle on Infinite Crisis?
Looks very interesting.

zatanna is probs my fav champion (mechanically) so i'm deffo interested in the troll warlord-esque form switching even doe i hate troll warlord in dota

Oh yeah that's definitely true, but I don't think it's just unfamiliarity with spells. I found that the art design, use of color, effects, animations, UI, visual noise etc in some games make them easier to read and less frustrating to look at/sort than others.

Worst examples being HoN and Infinite Crisis
Best examples being Dota2, Dawngate, HoN-> Strife transition

I can agree with this.

I've watched a few hon streams and even when I know what all the spells are and what they do, sorting through all the visual noise is terrible.

I wouldn't say LoL is quite as bad, but even within the limited pool of heroes I do know, I think there are cases things get lost a lot quicker than what I remember the beginnings of my dota 2 playing were like.

I tried IC early in its beta and I had no idea when stuff was being cast. That aspect was awful.

I was hyped to play a DC moba before I even picked up Dota2, then Infinite Crisis turned out to be drab and ugly with a map I don't enjoy playing and they went with clones (for ~lore~ purposes?) so you get like vampire Batman and steampunk Batman and similar variations for other heroes. Looking at the roster now it appears they've moved on from that but guess what ha ha so have I

When these kinds of games make a big deal about designing for lore and eSports instead of letting it build through community and play it tends to be awful.

A shadow has fallen over the Plane of Strife. An ancient evil, the Dharkwave horde of Sheol, is rumored to have arisen once more. The only thing that stands between the peaceful races of Strife and the threat of deadly invasion is a Rune of Darkstone, the only key that can open the portal to the underworld of Sheol.

For generations this mystical item, a fragment of the ancient Dark Obelisk, has been kept by the Keepers of the Code, the sacred guardians of the Planes of Strife. But the cryptic rune has gone missing. And some fear the worst.

In preparation of a Dharkwave invasion, the Keepers of the Code have built an Arena in Strife, with the hope that the fabled Army of Light might be trained there. (And some even say the Golden Child of prophecy has appeared there, riding his mystical Zidek dragon.)

Now, the mightiest heroes from the 5 planes are gathering together to face this new dread. They have come to Strife from their home Planes of Gael, Vorbis, Nestra, Tempra and Lyrie to battle in the arena, to prove their worth and to represent their people in the coming battle.

Some will rise. Some will fall. And all will be pushed to the limits of their strength and courage. These are the days of darkness.

These are the Trials of Strife.

Fuck

It's certainly possible. Since I've been playing Dota 1 for several years before starting to play League, I know what all the champions in Dota and League do, so for me it's simple to see what happens in either of the games, especially since the Dota2 heroes still look very close to their WC3 counterparts.

Thus, I can't personally see any difference in readability in the games, other than that Dota2 heroes tend to blend into the background sometimes.

This is a problem some of my league friends have when they play Dota too. I hadn't heard of it before.

I still don't understand it really.

Meh not foolish at all. If it was a paid game, ya then it might be foolish. But for a free game that I've spent so much time on, it's a good way to throw them money for a good product and getting something in return.

I think it has something to do with that the background is dark and several heroes are very dark as well. You're never going to make the same mistake in League.

For me the readability issue sometimes comes from Dota's art style. In league the bright cartoony style means there's a strong contrast between champions and everything else. In Dota (which i generally can follow well) it's a generally darker and more mute color pallet -- especially on the Dire side. This leads to me sometimes losing track of a hero or getting lost with what is happening. It's not a big problem for me, though. I find HoN hard to follow.

I played a very little bit of Dota and LoL but I'm going to wait for Heroes. Seems like like most accessible and the shorter match times seems appealing. Hopefully the beta isn't too far off.

Seems a bit OP though.
Marksman and an assassin, free ward, 2 dashes, true damage, aoe damage.

You're more qualified than me to say what's too stronk and what isn't in IC, but I'm OK with heroes / shapers / champions / w/e having a lot of utility if there's a high skill cap to maximize that extra utility and / or each skill isn't terribly strong on its own or isn't degenerate in combination with another skill (e.g. Invoker's tornado + EMP combo in Dota 2 atm).
