Introduction to MOBAs

Played some Infinite Crisis this weekend, the number of free heroes offered at the moment is too small for me. Hopefully the number offered expands in conjunction with the growth of the overall roster.

The Valentine's Day Doomsday skin is hilarious.

The Valentine's Day Doomsday skin is hilarious.

On the plus side, at least it's easier to learn the champions.

I still prefer Slumber Party Harley.

So I thought I should mention this. I met someone that works at Blizzard yesterday and he offered to get me into the Heroes of the Storm Alpha. He put my account on the list to get in on the next wave, whenever that is.

For those that don't already know, I'm a Dota player. I plan on streaming Heroes of the Storm when I get into that alpha for those that want a Dota player's perspective on the game.

For what I think of it right now, I like that it's trying to be something different than LoL or Dota, where so many other games have failed just trying to do over and over again. Blizzard seems like they understand that this game probably won't be competitive, and implemented fun stuff like multiple maps, and other things. It's more focused on fighting, rather than everything else that some people despise about Dota and LoL. Some of the hero concepts are pretty cool, Abathur in particular. I'd say Abathur could be closest compared to Dota's Nature's Prophet or Tinker.

Now with that said, I really hope they rethink the idea of charging for heroes. I thought at first that Blizzard understood that people aren't likely to take this game extremely seriously like Dota or LoL, and charging that much to actually play the heroes is not a good move in my opinion. People will pay for skins, they already do. It's proven to work. At the very least, they should lower the prices as the game comes out of Alpha, as they seem a bit high.

Can you hook me up? I'll be fair and balanced.

Oh man that sykkuno video was hilarious zkylon. Thanks for sharing. It's like those games big commentators cast for fun because the players in it are bad in an entertaining way, but with having the player cast themselves in this case.

He didn't do too bad and he had a "decent" build for the play level he was at.

Just found really funny his starting items, his confusion at Templar Assassin going invis, his confusion at no built-in ability to teleport to base (you have to buy tp scrolls to do that and they work like teleport from lol except you can tp on creeps and its on a 60s cd).

Also found his reaction to being oom pretty funny, had the same problem when I started playing Dota 2, was too used to lol and kept spamming my abilities.

He also picked a very entertaining hero to watch (tusk).

Although, I'm fairly certain he was acting like he had no idea what he doing because I found his Dotabuff profile: http://dotabuff.com/players/50491649/matches

And he had a couple previous matches before that with way better items and scores for his hero. Got a bit suspicious that an experienced league player didn't realize he had tower aggro a couple of times.

Regardless, pretty funny still.

She's a professional troll / stream personality / donationGETTER.

Here's some fun stuff for the DOTA2 StarLadder tournament which just finished.

Over 32 matches with $200,000 prizepool: 67/107 heroes picked.

i dunno, i have a lot of very bizarre issues with doto like having trouble realizing when i'm dead or taking damage (and u know, one leads to the other)

One of my my biggest issues is i sometimes have no idea who is on what team. I'm used to red names and blue names, rather than names of all colors.

i guess those things you just don't think about and it really messes you up when they're changed

like having to manually level up, spacebar sending you to a random position in the map instead of locking on your dude and doto hating wholesome family fun

spacebar defaults to the last place an "event" happened so either a tower fell or someone pinged or something

its not random and you can rebind it if you want it can be changed to locking onto your dude if you want

i dunno what manually leveling up means

you want it to pick your skill build for you?

like you level up and have to like click on level up thingie and then which skill you have to level up

i'm sure there's a hotkey but i'm not at that stage yet

CTRL + Q, W, E, R, D, or F for leveling up skills.

CTRL + U for leveling up stats.

filthy mouse draggers

there is a hotkey

tis a simple rebind in the settings menu away if you want

you can make dota 2 pretty close to lol if you really want to

some of these are very lazy reasons

they're all lazy reasons

i played like 3 games of doto

reality is it's pretty shit to go from making plays and winning games to fucking up every last hit and not understanding anything, so it's hard to give the game a fair chance

like i said it's things you're used to from league, not really issues with doto

Yeah that's been my biggest issue with trying to get into Dota. It's really frustrating to have all of your knowledge and intuition about the game become worthless. Playing dota and being frustrated or confused just makes me want to go back to league where i'm more comfortable and have more fun due to a greater understanding. Getting into dota would take a big dedication on my part, which i'm not sure i'm willing to give due to how much i enjoy watching the LCS.

I hate when I buy stuff from the Dota 2 store before I remember the Marketplace exists.

I will always try and buy from the store when proceeds go to players or event holders though

yea it's not even frustrating for me but i feel like it's a lot harder to appreciate the game straight up than league

not sure if that's true tho

I felt the opposite. Playing Dota ruined me on League. At least as far the client, F2P model, cosmetics, and art goes.

well but that's like periphery stuff

i just can't have playing doto cos i find it really hard to just pick up and play if you don't already know what you're doing

it's not like you're gonna be competitive in league on your first 10 games or whatever but the initial gap is a lot easier to get through since items are simpler and a lot of mechanics are more straightforward (as well as there being less of them)

also i feel like with so many league champions being humanoids it's a lot easier to tell what everyone does at a glance

As someone who played Dota2 for about a year off and on and stopped playing because I was terrible, I tried picking up League of Legends again after seeing this thread to get my Moba fix on.

I have a terrible memory; to me the game seems a lot harder to learn than Dota2. While mechanically it's alot simpler, the presentation is very poorly implemented since it requires several clicks to see what abilities each champion has and which roles they fill. Got one game in and was turned right back off. Seems like I have to read a guide for every (free) hero before even queuing up.

Dota2 exposes that information to you right upfront and you can quickly look up what your teammates are capable of too. Single draft helps slowly expose you to new heroes as well. While the peak of the learning curve of Dota2 is higher than LoL, it's not nearly as steep.

After a weekend of play, Smite is great fun. Simple mechanics and 3rd person combat is a blast. Seems to have a chill community too.

I've only done Smite myself, but given how much that I've heard about MOBA communities I'd say that it seems way better than I expected. In my first 20 or so matches I think that I've had like two players who were chirping a bit at their teammates play, and none of that was honestly very toxic at all. Maybe stuff gets worse in ranked play, but this has really not been an issue for me so far and I expected way worse. Also most players just seem to use the VGS system to communicate, so most annoyance seems to just come out via message spamming and not bothering to take the time to type out angry messages.

Seems Riot is taking a note out of Icefrog's playbook

From tonight's patch:
he current state of top lane is a couple of champs go to fight on an island and that makes the balancing act tricky. We know that nerfs won’t work because taking down today’s bullies (hi Renekton!) means that others would rise to the spot. Instead, we're going to be buffing(!) champions over time that have teamfight-oriented, healthy gameplay.

In my experience the community's shenanigans are vastly over exaggerated. You will meet 1 person every 3 games who is even remotely aggressive, and frankly, if someone calling you names over the internet is enough to dampen your enjoyment of the game then you need to grow thicker skin (I'm talking in general btw rather than anyone here). And if you start the game by being friendly it generally sets a nicer mood.
