Introduction to MOBAs

Just starting to read through this, but are there any games out there with multiple rivers, bases, factions, etc? i.e. the standard match multiplied by more teams/bases/players.

There are some mods in WC3 that fulfill one or two of your criteria, but no 4 way free for all wide scale MOBA that unifies all those concepts.

Can you imagine how OP oracle would be in LoL, my god. He' already broken as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck in Dota 1 (not in Dota 2 yet).

Pseudo-RNG is fine

I think that Dead Island ZOMBA has a mode with three teams and bases, no first-hand impressions though as the first mission (which is some shitty ARPG knockoff) put me to sleep. Also your goal seems to be to scavenge stuff and whatnot so I doubt the rules are similar to Dotes

Apart from that there's probably a WC3 map like this. There's a WC3 map for everything.

Just noticed that I got the option to install Heroes of the Storm... first time I've tried a MOBA since the original DotA and AoS maps. I tried DotA 2 one time, joined a "noob" match, got promptly yelled out for not knowing what I was doing and that was that. Looking forward to not only playing a more simplified MOBA experience, but getting in on it early.

Techies and Teemo team.

No walking outside of base allowed.

Poor man's Chipper Timbersaw.

You know, I still haven't really given Timbersaw a good try after the first week of release. I should really get around to that.

That always seemed to be more do they're not instant counters to am, pugna, kotl, anything with a diffusal etc. and less to do with a general 'every hero needs mana' philosophy.

Edit what is that grammar fuck it

Hah, I know what you mean. And yeah, it's so they aren't perfect counters to those heroes since they have a few "Cast off HP" guys. I think the frog is trying to look into other resource sources like with Earth Spirit being constrained by rocks so it'll be interesting to see where they take it.

LoL > Dota 2 because

Oh, I did love Teemo as well. But I'm one of those jerks that's looking forward to the Techies.

Not a fan of RNG, personally. As a person who grew up with tabletop RPGs (yes I'm old shut up) I've seen a lot of different permutations of it, and always felt that it was something of a lazy crutch used by designers who lack creativity.

The trend in game design - all game design, from pen and paper and CCGs on up through MMOs and strategy games - has been moving against it consistently for thirty years, and for good reason. It generally exists as a form of design shorthand or stop-gap solution for a system that couldn't be tuned to operate in a consistent and satisfying manner in and of itself.

That said, DotA isn't hugely random. It's more random than I would prefer, certainly, but not to a massive degree. The WC3 DNA in the original engine saw to that.

Someone had archnaphobia and cyborgmatt made a mod for him that changes all the spiders to frogs in top hats.
that man's a hero

seems like every moba has a sexy spider lady except dota

icefrog pls
i'm terrified of most so i'm lucky elise was the type of spider my brain doesn't mind. like at least it isn't hairy and is stylized enough that it doesn't make me cry in terror. quite literally, actually.

sometimes while i'm playing i see her in the corner of my eye, all kind of blurry and my mind fills in the blanks and my imagination being such a nice lady, it will put the worse parts in her so my heart'll skip a beat or something

but hey i'm scared of my own hair sometimes so u know, i still live

that'd be kinda cool, if very weird

doesn't hots have like a cave system or something like that

Hopefully Techies get cool skins like this.

It'd be funny if HotS actually turned out to turn people into ragers even more frequently than the other games do. Subpar players now drag down the entire team no matter what and comebacks seem nigh impossible - possibly somewhat counterbalanced by the shorter match times, time will tell. In any case it's unlikely to become the safe haven many GAFfers new to the genre imagine it to be.

RNG is fine so long as the effect is balanced appropriately. I think void and slardar's bashes are good, trolls seems a little rare, cranium basher's chance seems pretty well balanced actually. I'm a big troll player, at this point I'd rather some other effect than bash on his melee, or atleast allow basher to stack with it. Ogre kind of sucks still, so does PA. I don't know what to do with LD, but roots seems to proc enough.

How about, remove bash from troll's melee stance, add lifesteal, 10/15/20/25% on melee form, roll in the damage gained from bash chance into his melee form as well, something like +15/25/35/45. Essentially creating a new jungle hero who can support and carry a little.

That was a thing way back in DotA, you could even stack multiple bashers on top of that. We've been stunlocking fools on AM and Troll all day, good times.

Even the courier is too much micro for me. Whenever I want to send it to the secret shop it takes me a good five seconds.

hotkeys!

I have the courier bound to the scroll up on my mouse wheel and my hero on scroll down. shop menu on another mouse button. Secret shop is auto-bound to W by default. So for me, sending the cour to the shop is:

mouse scroll up --> W --> scroll down

Send it to shop and return my control to my character.

< 1 second.

I'd probably be even faster if I used keyboard keys.

Downloaded Steam and starting to download Dota2... I have no idea what I've gotten myself into. Just built myself a gaming rig last week. I like RPGs, MMORPGs, and competitive online games, so hopefully this will be an enjoyable experience. Any quick tips for someone just starting out, or should I stop being a douche read the last 30 pages of this thread?

Perma stun troll was the worst THE WORST

Let me introduce you to my good friend Sniper.

Nope, just stop on over in the Dota 2 thread.
Read Purge's guide http://www.purgegamers.com/welcome-to-dota-you-suck
Watch videos by Merlini and Purge
Go through the tutorial, you'll learn some basics and get some items, then start playing some games against bots with bots.

go through the tutorial and limited pool play. spend some time in players vs bots until you get the hang of the basics. Visit the Dota2 thread on community side for resources.

Those other games just arent good enough for Broodmother

And she isnt good enough for Dota

for a while, the confines of the map weren't even good enough for her

life is hard for a single spider mom that doesn't conform to game designers' beauty standard, thx obama

Your new best friend:

In case things go bad

Sniper can perma stun you before you even get near. (950 range)
You could have an inventory full of hyperstones and still wouldn't even be half as scary as a Troll with two basherinos

i couldn't really do the doto tutorial

like now i can't remember but i think you couldn't skip to the "i have some moba experience, please for the love of god stop telling me destroying turrets is good and explain to me what the fuck is a rune"

You can with a console command I thought.
Lone Druid has more than 1 bear now? That's a deal breaker. Why you do this Icefrog =(
Still only one.

If you got that from the 4 annie bears, someone was talking about warlock and he can have 4 golems with aghs and refresher.

Oh yeah that too. It didn't help that the tutorial bugged out in the second level with sniper and I was completely unable to finish that level without starting it over again. Luckily I could bypass the tutorial by editing some text files to auto-enter stuff into the console but this shit should be optional. The doto2 tutorial is forever terrible for me just for that.

I had the same experience with Strife, and it was mandatory...ugh.

Cmon guys, dont you feel like you learned something about dota when the tutorial made you get mana boots on sniper?
