Introduction to MOBAs

it's like they can't reach their full potential if people are watching

I think its like in Dota where the creeps all carry anti-tower technology. Now see, you may wonder why they don't give it to the heroes and champs. And I will tell you. Its because its a trade secret with the creep unions.

Minions are constructs of the League, used specifically for battle arenas. They aren't sentient. In the earliest days of the League – during their extensive testing phase – there was a rumor that they were using sentient beings as minions. They even supposedly used necromancy to summon skeletal minions to fight as the minions of today do. Such rumors are generally thought to be unsubstantiated.

Minions are so spooky and skeletal, turrets get intimidated and want to die quicker

So creeps are basically condottieri? I can believe that.

I've gotten more harassment and more gratitude in a couple days of playing league than nearly a year of Dota 2. I haven't seen people this mad since SC2 where a well timed baneling or roach bust (or having the audacity to build mutas or broodlords) caused some people to just absolutely melt down. At the same time people are unnecessarily quick to be thankful for heals, tping in to help etcetc Hopefully with further time put in I'll find the general community tone settles down to something more stable.

@Hylian7
Nice mini review. One question, how smooth is the dismounting and getting into combat, can you take damage while doing so? I've watched some streams but it's hard to tell exactly how that's working.

Wait what? I thought League didn't have tps (to towers).

Higher elo/ranking = Less rage

People will probably argue with me on this but I find it true for league. There's still rage, just less of it. People start to understand typing abuse doesn't really do anything.

Yeah, I was very pleased to unlock that summoner spell. The cooldown is frustrating but it means I have to make better decisions about when to use it and why.

I will never understand why people think yelling helps. If I'm getting frustrated with someone being over-aggressive, a simple " be careful" or "stay with me" is of more use than cursing and blaming them for everything under the sun. In my experience people usually respond better to gentle prodding. I don't tend to take teammates being picked on well either and will sometimes stick my nose in when I should just stfu and finish the game.

That said, I actually don't mind bossy people who are trying to be helpful in these types of games. I've had hopeless looking games salvaged by someone taking a leadership role and making sure everyone was on the same page and working efficiently.

No item. Just a summoner spell that has a long cooldown.

Oh riot, what could have been.

Alpha League even had Urn of Shadows:

And Boots Knife of Travel:

yeah im sure in both you only really want to do it if it's kind of low or if someone can tank it for a while
in dota 1 you would NEVER hear the end of it if you backdoored, it was like the dirtiest thing

Basically you dismount instantly if you hit Z, attack, use a spell, or get damaged at all. You channel for a few seconds to mount by hitting Z, and that gets interrupted if you get damaged or cancel it. You have a 2 or 3 second (can't remember exactly) cooldown to try mounting again if you cancelled your previous mount or it stopped.

There are some heroes that don't have mounts for certain reasons, such as Abathur and Falstad. These two in particular have global TP's a la Dota's Nature's Prophet instead.

One more thing I forgot to mention in HotS: a LOT of the spells affect buildings. It took me a long time for my Dota brain to grasp the fact that I could use spells on towers. Unlike Dota, the case is pretty much "If it does damage, assume if affects buildings unless the description says otherwise."

Turbine pls.

1. don't queue at 4am, dummy.

2. Sometimes the queue "breaks" and just needs to be restarted, but that was likely not the case since you were queuing at 4am, dummy

3. More people should play Infinite Crisis.

The other people I was MM'd with said they had to wait ~10 minutes too.

Everyone on my team decided to 5 man bot lane for a laugh because of that, it didn't go very well.

At least we had a big American dance party at the ancient as blue team was taking it. (Like literally used the /dance command.)

So someone started a weekly HotS tournament. Did anyone link to any streams yesterday? I forgot about this thread for a bit. Also, my terrible self got into the Alpha recently.

I hadn't seen that.

I googled a bit and I think I found what you're talking about.

http://www.twitch.tv/din0pandasaurus/b/523710261 That's the only stream I could really find.

Here are some pick/ban stats from it:

Apparently Raynor and Kerrigan are good?

Raynor is really good. Strong auto-attack, decent push ability, powerful ult in the form of Hyperion. Kerrigan is great at starting engages. There are some other streams but the one you found is of the tournament winning team. Their Round Three against Team Frozen (Idra's team) was probably the most entertaining of the entire tournament. First ban starts at 3:23:40. Game itself starts at 3:33:30. The combo Team Frozen uses in the first game involves Kerrigan's ult for damage.

The first game of round four (the finals) explains one of the reasons why Raynor is banned so often, as well as being a great Abathur game to watch. 4:52:20 is when they get their first pick (Raynor). I can't discern what the first ban was. They load into the map at 5:02:00.

Also, I fucking hate Twitch's VOD player.

I'm confused. I'm watching the stream and it looks like it's played like Dota's All-Pick. Can't you just, like, wait until the other team picks and counter them? If there are even counters.

There's no actual pick/ban system in the game. The players wanted to do it themselves for the tournament. What Blizzard did put into the game in the last major patch was the ability to create custom games. So both teams pile into a custom game, and in the chat the team captains go back and forth typing out the picks and bans. Unfortunately the chat is covered by the streamer's face cam so you can only go by what he relays and discusses with the team. Then when everything is set and agreed upon both teams ready up and the custom game starts.

I've had a lot of time on my hands lately, and only a tablet to spend it with, so I've been watching other people game on Twitch.

I've spent the weekend watching games of some League of Legends championship in the hopes that it may grow on me.. See, I've never before played or watched a MOBA game of any sort despite being an RTS gamer. Anyway, long story short, the more I kept watching, the less I understood. I watched about 4-5 games of it until I gave up - I have no idea what the point or fun in it is.

Are these the kind of games you need to play to actually get a feel of?

You need to know at least the characters and their skills to understand what's going on. Otherwise, it's just a nonsense fireworks show.

I started playing Dota a week before TI3 (Biggest event) so I could enjoy watching more.
You won't be able to see or appreciate nearly as much.

Yeah you'll need to play the game enough to understand what they're doing, if something someone doing is bad.

I still get lost and confused when I watch team fights though. I have no idea how people understand what's going on.

It's one problem with commentators. On one hand there are those new to the game/genre. But on the other hand, there are regular players who will get bored if the casters kept repeating the basics every match. You wouldn't the excitement if a team executes difficult maneuvers, especially ones where chances to do them are very rare.

Riot's LCS has instant replays during a broadcast at a reduced speed which I find helpful. (I'm not versed enough in League to just know what's going on, even though I watch LCS.)

I know but sometimes there's 2/3 fights going on at the same time and with 10 players fighting it's a bit hard to follow.

A couple of other weird quirks to HotS that I noticed after playing more:

- All spells can damage buildings. Skillshots can be stopped by enemy buildings. This was most evident with Pud- I mean Stitches Hook. I tried to get someone that was past a tower and "ding" nothing.

- If you bring an enemy behind your own fort somehow, they immediately bounce out. I tried hooking enemies in with Stitches and they bounced as soon as they got to the wall. I also used Gorge on an enemy, and walked them behind our fort. As soon as they spit out, they immediately were pushed outside the wall.

That last point sounds wrong. Are you actually talking about the heal area behind the palace/nexus?

I've been tossed over a wall by Diablo and it sure didn't warp me back over to the other side. It was a death sentence.

No, talking about behind your fort walls anywhere. If no part of the wall is destroyed yet, then they just bounce out.

That... doesn't sound right. Because players can teleport into forts, players can walk through the jungle area to get into forts from behind, Diablo can do his flip move and get people stuck on his side of the wall to get them mauled by towers, etc. It's very possible to get people over there.

One example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7kEliZN6zk

The issue I'm guessing is Stitches' hook specifically, but Gorge should let you do it without any trouble.
