iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

felt like my iphone 6 was going to melt during the update but now that its done doing all its stuff its running quite well. everything seems just as fast or faster that ios 10 with the exception of updating apps which seems a lot slower.

seems like the mail app is finally syncing read/unread correctly again which is nice.

now to see how battery life holds up.

Juddery animation when opening Safari. Usually after having been in another app and then coming back to Safari. Also happens in a couple of other apps, eg. Todoist, but then other apps are always smooth.

Lol. YMMV. Some things are quicker, some not.

Also rotation is finicky and sometimes gets jammed in the wrong orientation. Or the dock has rotated but the page hasn’t.

Just a couple of niggles.

Edit:

Just to clarify what I mean by ‘juddery’, it’s more like a frame rate drop. I’m speculating here, but I think it may have something to do with the adaptive refresh rate on the 10.5 not being implemented as well, and it may be dropping to 30hz on the home screen or something.

Hmm. I’m not seeing that, at least not when switching between apps on the dock.

I do notice a slight delay in Safari when starting it up cold, but not when returning

Not a troll post, a legitimate question - but what do you all use your iPads for?

Browsing
Watching movies/tv
Listening to music
Games
Fantasy football
Banking apps
Note taking
Poor attempts at drawing
Bringing up PDFs and docs for work
Shopping
Trip planning with maps and hotel/Airbnb apps
As a cash register at my son’s scout meetings
Lots and lots of comics
Kindle book reading
FaceTiming with family

I use the shit out of an iPad

Siri finally got a male Brazilian Portuguese voice and he sounds cute, lol. The new female voice is fluid as hell too, but I'm switching to the dude. Hope the macOS voices also get updates (I actually use the VoiceOver feature a lot for a few reasons).

The App Store is truly beautiful and should be the template for iOS 12.
It really is. The today tab makes me want to check it daily.

I have the 9.7” Pro and the Smart Keyboard cover. It’s my main “pc” at home. I use it for everything.

I have an old 2011 Mac mini that I turn on once in a while to make sure it still works, but I never use it.

You’re right. Looking at Settings and seeing “Health” there... and now I feel like a fool haha 😅

Thought I read somewhere that due to HIPAA compliance they couldn’t back that data up like the other iCloud services. But having the phone locked for it makes sense.
No problem. 😀

Holy shit

My world has been rocked

Changing the volume doesn’t obstruct the whole center of the screen!! Finally!

So bizarre... And annoying. I can't even remember what I had on there, so those are lost sales for the devs, and lost games/apps for me.

Same here. It’s got more apps than Steam with worse curation so whatever I was tracking will probably never be bought now. Apple screwing the devs over and inconveniencing the customer.

Is there any way to pause/play netflix when not in the app but streaming on chromecast? Seems the play button isn't smart enough to switch depending on context like on android. Hoping I'm missing something.

My iPad Mini 2 is my only iOS device, so I use it for games when I don't want to drain my phone battery (and games that aren't on Android).

But I recently got a cheap Surface 3 since I was tired of using the Mini's tiny screen to watch videos on (and its tiny 32GB of memory that's mostly taken up by games). The stylus support is nice (and much cheaper than Apple's Pencil which wouldn't work on my Mini 2 anyways), Steam Streaming at home works very well, and it has SD card expansion and a full USB port so I can put as many movies as I want when I'm traveling.

If I'd had enough money at the time I'd have LOVED to get the iPad Pro 10.5in. The screen size is very nice, the 120hz screen is incredible, and the Apple Pencil feels very nice (if a bit overpriced imo).

Is there any way to force the iPad to see iOS 11? On my iPad mini 4 when I check for a software update it just says that my 10.3.3 version is up to date. I tried restarting the iPad and also turning wifi off/on. I was able to update my iPhone without any issues.

Disspointing that the animation from the "card" view of an app to full screen from mission control is jerky on the 2nd gen iPad pro

Some thoughts after messing around with my iPhone 7 for an hour:

I do not like the new notification center. I don't like how there's no way to clear all new notifications you have to swipe them away one at a time. Occasionally I get the "Clear all" option, so I assume it just doesn't give you that option if they aren't that old. I also don't like how messy the swiping action is because if you don't swipe enough it gives you the "View/Clear" options and It is already swipe left to clear or swipe right to open, so I don't know why that menu needs to be there.

I like the new control center, but I don't like the customization menu. It feels clunky having to go into options to pick what you want to add/remove and then swapping the icon spots around. They should have made it where you get shown the control center and can then drag/drop icons around as you please. Also, unless I am missing something, it is annoying you cannot fully customize it and change things like if you want the Do not Disturb icon or Screen Mirroring icon.

Performance feels good. I had some stuttering around menus when I started using the phone, but I think that was just everything settling into place because it isn't there now. Actions like pulling down the notification center and opening command center feel a lot faster to me and so does unlocking the phone. I had one annoying bug forcing a hard shut-down of the phone so, but I have not encountered any other glaring bugs.

Negative thoughts:

It is hard not to mention that it is 2017 and Apple still won't let you move your apps around wherever you want them, and we are still stuck with the messy drag and drop and hope everything doesn't get messed. Also, the fact that neither the iPhone 7 or the iPhone 7+ have any multitasking features just seems disappointing.

80% of my web browsing at home
Chat apps
Video streaming, particularly late at night when I'd rather be in bed than on the couch
Note taking at work
Checking email
Doodling (poorly, but it keeps me occupied during meetings)

I use my iPad more than any other device at home aside from gaming. Phone sucks in comparison.

Apple TV remote widget in the control center is the shit.
Except it only works with 4th gen and newer Apple TVs :(

It is my main non-gaming computer. I use my first-gen iPad Pro for web browsing and email, chatting with friends, as a word processor, taking notes, doing my budgets, watching TV/movies/YouTube (when away from my TV), primary email, etc. I take it to work every day, and use it in bed at night.

I got the iPad Pro to replace my laptop, and the only thing my laptop could do that this doesn't is play PC games, and I have a powerful gaming PC for that. The iPad is quite a bit more responsive than my old laptop was.

3D Touch on the X and it’ll give you the option to clear all.

Fine by me I only use that one now. I retired my old Apple TV last year :)

My only complaint is there aren’t any volume controls in the widget, but I don’t adjust the volume much after I start watching content. So no biggie

If you’re sending audio to a Bluetooth receiver (like AirPods) or using HDMI-CEC with a receiver while the widget is active you can use the hardware volume buttons to control volume

Doing it with my AirPods right now

I used my 3rd generation iPad for about a year as my primary internet browser. Perfect size for browsing on the go.

Other uses:

- Kindle (nice screen size for reading in bed. Syncs with the iPhone app I use more often)

- FaceTime (I use it rarely, but it's cool)

- comic reading (what little I do)

- Youtube and Netflix streaming when I'm not at home or I don't want to drag my laptop around to different rooms

- drawing/painting (Procreate is awesome)

- a second screen I can use to pull up art reference on Pinterest, Tumblr or wherever

- portable portfolio (I like to pull files off Dropbox and add them to a photo album)

- word processing and note taking via Evernote or OneNote. I've written whole papers this way.

- games

Honestly one of the larger iPhone models would be suitable for most of these functions. At this point the main advantage of my aging iPad is the screen size. It's not compatible with any of the newer iOS updates.

My iphone 7 finally works great, coming from a 6s when i got the 7 the phone seemed slower for pretty much every task compared to the 6s, with this update everything is super snappy and i can actually see a difference now when using this next to a 6s both with ios 11

I said goodbye on gaming side, but I want to say goodbye here as well.

Goodbye Dungeon Raid, sword&poker, Shin Megami Tensei and Shining Force. Forgotten and in-updated. SMT finally saw an English release and it falls to the wayside.

Goodbye Groovecoaster and infinity Gene, you were so awesome but taito doesn't love you anymore and will sunset you.

Goodbye crystal Defenders, and Mega Man 2(the good one). Replaced with sub-par FTP or even more poorly emulated versions.

Mine outputs to a sound bar via optical output , but I tried anyways on both my devices. I was hoping it would work like it does via my harmony hub downstairs...lol.
