iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

Twitter updated their iOS app to support the dark mode / invert color mode without screwing up images, so 3rd party devs can definitely do that. Cool for those who care about dark UI.

Also check out AirMeasure, some nice AR demos and utilities in one app! (like measuring the size of a box you need for an item, very useful for shipping)

The loss of the 3D touch multitasking gesture is nearly enough to make me go back to iOS 10. I used it to switch apps 100% of the time and now Apple wants me to go back to double tapping the home button like a pleb.

It was removed so that iPhone X users could have a different gesture idiom for app switching sorry

updated fast and is working very smoothly on an SE for me.

anyone know how to delete in imessage app though? cant figure it out at all...

Delete what? Swipe left to delete a conversation, or long-press on a specific message then select More to delete single messages.

Is there still no way to sort working folders? I hate when you delete apps and it leaves an empty space there instead of bumping your other apps from the next page up.

Super pleased with watchOS 4 and iOS 11 (5S) so far. Everything runs very well and feels smoother. We’ll see how battery life fares today, both had a whole night to get their background stuff going. Particularly interested in the Watch battery life, my 5S battery is 4 yo at this point so it has been bad before.

Having the opposite experience with 5s. Lots of freezing when launching apps or crashin.

Well this is the first time I’ve experienced Apple putting out a system update that makes everything slower, on a 7 Plus.
It seems like they probably made raise to wake and unlocking slower so that people wouldn’t notice FaceID being slower than TouchID.

Lots of animations in the OS drop frames now, or have big delays.
Quitting out of an app using the home button and then pressing the home button again to close the open folder has a huge delay on it now.
Opening folders has enough of a delay that I keep tapping them twice because it didn’t appear to respond, and end up opening a random app.

I can’t think what justification they must have had for removing the 3D Touch multitasking, other than removing it entirely because the X can’t support it.
Same reason they removed the headphone jack from the Plus phones, right?
I still hate that decision - the adapters are a huge inconvenience, sound worse, don’t let you charge and listen at the same time, and don’t last more than a few months before they start randomly hanging up calls or the mic stops working with them.
With a Plus-sized phone, hitting the home button is really awkward for me. I basically have to two-hand the phone to use it now, to avoid the risk of dropping it.

The biggest annoyance for me, aside from the loss of 3D Touch multitasking, is that search seems absolutely useless now.
Siri’s app suggestions when you pull down the search bar are just the eight most recent apps installed, instead of being frequently used apps for that time of day.
Searching for an app on the device doesn’t work until you type the complete and exact name!
Other than a handful of apps on the dock or the home screen, I kept everything else inside one big folder and just pulled down to use search to launch apps.
Now I get a huge list with ads for the App Store, iTunes Store, local music tracks, imdb, Siri Knowledge, web videos, bing search results, dictionary results. No apps, unless I type the complete name.
I’ve also disabled search for certain apps like Files and it’s still bringing up results for it - including files for apps where Files’ access has been disabled, which would normally require TouchID to access.
Is there any way to change/disable this? Search used to be really customizable. Now it is useless and a privacy nightmare.

Anyone else having a problem where your purchased music ringtones won’t play? It gives me the option to pick them in the ringtone menu, but when I get a call it just plays the default ringtone. If I select one of the other baked in tones it will play that fine, but if I select a purchased song ringtone it just plays the iPhone default.

oops skipped a word there.

im wondering how to delete imessage apps themselves. (the ones that dont put icons on your home screen at all and can only be found in imessage) looks like in beta you could swipe on the app when editing the app bar in imessage, but that isnt working at all for me.

i know in ios10 you could hold down the icon and delete like you would any app, but you cant do that in ios11 at all apparently.

yo, that ARkit thing is kinda legit.

also, the screen recording...

Try a hard reset? Speed is unaffected on my 7+, search works the same as before too
This is after leaving the device overnight, so all indexing etc. should be complete, and I've reset it several times.
Here's an example of the useless search results that I'm getting now:

I have to type the complete app name "settings" to launch the app.
In iOS 10, typing S would bring up apps beginning with S, and settings would be first if it was the most-used result.
I have also disabled search results for the FIles app in Siri's settings, yet I'm still getting results for those files. (that is just a dummy file iCab places with instructions to enable file access)

OK, multasking question:

I needed to reference an a website quickly whilst writing an email, so I dragged up Safari into a hover window on top of a fullscreen instance of Gmail. Once I was done with safari, I swiped it left offscreen.

Later on, I now want full screen Safari, but when I click on Safari on the dock, the hover instance just pops back on screen. How do I get it back to full screen?

Yes, you have to go into full wiggle mode, not just start dragging. When you grab the first wiggling icon you can then pick up others and move them as a group

Ah, thanks!.

If I type 's', settings shows up. Like I said, do a hard reset (volume down + power). If that doesn't work, you need to backup to iCloud and then do a full reinstall.

Sometimes dumb shit like this happens on upgrade. On iOS 10 I had a problem where after using Safari all of my bookmarks would disappear until next reboot. It's frustrating because there are no error messages (whereas on Windows you'd get a bunch of nonsense errors that at least catch your attention), but after doing the rounds with Applecare online, that was the only solution.

(If you went into a store for AppleCare support this is what they will do: first a hard reset, then erase-all followed by a reinstall.)

a) Keep Safari as hover app for the future but go full screen now: Go to home screen, launch Safari
b) Remove Safari as hover app and go full screen: Put the iPad into splitscreen (pull the handle at the top of the hover window up or down, can't recall rn) and the slide your Gmail away

It’s faster than it’s ever been for me so nah.
By the time the wake animation fades in, iOS 10 would have unlocked the phone and been on the home screen on my 7 Plus. Maybe it's faster on Gen 1 TouchID though?
Really seems like a case of adding animations everywhere that are slowing down using the device, like older versions of iOS did.

Have you ever played with the 3ds's AR cards?

That shit is 7 years old. Nothing about Apple's AR stuff is impressive to me.

the 3DS cards required those cards as reference points. You essentially put down a QR code which the 3DS tracked.

ARkit doesn't require any physical object. That's the difference. It sits somewhere between physical object based tracking (3DS) and actual 'room sensing' tracking (Google's project Tango).

How do you access this? Is it on the iPad Air 2?

ARkit is only iPhone 6S and younger. iPad Pro and younger. (the A9 chip is required iirc)

Ugh. I knew it was going to be something like that. They're really making me question whether I want to support this kind of rubbish going forward.

Juice's comment is speculation, not fact.

there are plenty of inconsistent behaviours between devices - no 3D Touch on iPad; no swipe up for home on anything except X; swipe up behaviour is different on iPad vs X (multitasking is half swipe + hold on X, full swipe up on iPad. Full swipe goes home on X)

Maybe 3D Touch multitasking was removed because it wasn't used much or users found it difficulty to trigger? When I had a case with a lip I found it hard to get far enough over the edge to use consistently.

Lol, of course Apple just had to find a way to mess up a good feature. Type to Siri forces use of the Apple keyboard — even though it's not my default keyboard and is disabled in settings. Fuck that 😡

This happened to me with Waze and it turned out it was disabled for Siri search results in settings. Make sure it's enabled for Settings.

*raises hand*

I found it cumbersome, counterintuitive and it often conflicted with the 'go back a pane' or 'mark as read' gesture.
Apple must have usage data that would tell them that this gesture - while used religiously by some - hasn't really been embraced by their user base as a whole.
Also, with the introduction of iPhone X and iOS 11 on iPad they're already fragmenting iOS' UI interaction paradigms enough, they didn't want yet another 'fork'.

On the iPad you swipe up
One the iPhone X you swipe up
On iPhones you double tap the home button
On iPhones with 3D touch you double tap the home button (or use the 3D touch swipe)

i feel this was more about trimming fat than 'forcing' any kind of new idiom onto their user base

No swipe keyboard on iphones with ios 11? I love that on ipad for number entry in particular

Just updated some of the iOS devices at work and I've gotta say, the QoL improvements are amazing. Loving the swipe up to dock and the new interface for settings in the swipe menu. Very intuitive.

No Wishlist is damn annoying.

Also, the X doesn't have 3D touch?

This works without cards.

Exactly! Some people are really blind sometimes.

That said that Stacks app isn't that reliable to me. Not sure I'm doing something wrong or my SE camera is hurting this but sometimes it can't find a surface despite there being one.

This is my biggest peeve with ios 11 - those slideovers popping up when you actually want it to flip to a full screen app. workarounds are clumsy. It remembers what app you had in slideover on which other app for far too long.
