iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

Mostly liking iOS 11 on my iPad, won't update my phone until my game collection has been made 64bit.

iOS 11 is a bit of a hodgepodge though, things like Safari mix this new wide icons such as the reload button with the super thin buttons like the share sheet. Strange that Apple did not try to better enforce graphical consistency with this version. It feels a bit like Tiger.

So how do you enable the Apple Pay thing in iMessage?

Actually back with the same problem
Wifi toggle keeps turning on
I think it's meant to do this for some dumb reason. Turning Wi-Fi off in control centre just disconnects it from whatever you were connected to rather than turning the radio off. I think Bluetooth works the same way.

The way the wifi toggle works is a million times better. There's zero reason to turn wifi off; the idea it has any meaningful effect on battery is nonsense. But there are times when I'm on a public wifi and I'm leaving a building and it persists in staying connected even when it's too far away to be useful.

I think you're right, wifi off and wifi toggle off showed two different icons.

Juice's comment is speculation, not fact.

there are plenty of inconsistent behaviours between devices - no 3D Touch on iPad; no swipe up for home on anything except X; swipe up behaviour is different on iPad vs X (multitasking is half swipe + hold on X, full swipe up on iPad. Full swipe goes home on X)

Maybe 3D Touch multitasking was removed because it wasn't used much or users found it difficulty to trigger? When I had a case with a lip I found it hard to get far enough over the edge to use consistently.

I think the reasons you mention are why they aren't concerned about losing the feature—even though I used it all the time and had no issue triggering it—but I doubt they were the motivating factor, which I assume was simplicity.

That said, what about the X's multitask gesture makes it impossible to implement on pre-X phones? A 6S or a 7 can't detect a 'half swipe + hold' for some reason?

It wouldn't work as designed because the "slider" on the bottom doesn't exist on pre-X phones. That is what you drag up from to do the X gestures. Furthermore, you would open up control center as is.

On an iPad I can long press notifications to expand them but not on the SE.

I hate inconsistencies like that and currently iOS has a bunch of these between apps and devices.

Since Apple made the bizarre decision to remove the wish list from the App Store (?) is there some other app that tracks prices and lets you wishlist stuff? I used to use AppShopper but Apple killed it back in the day so I wondered if there was something similar, or AppShopper works again these days?

How can i see my old whishlist now?

Are content blockers in Safari all broken? 1Blocker, Purify, and Better aren't working properly for me. Purify is still blocking a few but not as good as iOS 10

This happened to me with Waze and it turned out it was disabled for Siri search results in settings. Make sure it's enabled for Settings.
Uh no thanks? I don't want to have search results from the app, I just want it to show up quickly in search. Bone headed decision by Apple to couple the two.

I updated my Mini 4 to iOS 11 and I've just learned about the app-switch 3D Touch gesture for my 6S, so won't update that one.

Talk about being late to the party... 3D Touch has been useless for me until now. Why the heck would Apple remove that gesture?

You could use the AppShopper webapp.

My watch still hasn't gotten the update. Can it take a few days?

If you use your watch to control your music or podcast like I do, I recommend you don't update it. So far I've been unable to see a way to control my podcast on the watch and I regret updating.

Edit: After restarting my watch, the feature to control my podcast is back.

Appshopper works fine. I recommend installing workflow and this action extension. You can add an app to your watch list or view the price history right from the share sheet in the AppStore. It’s great

Wait what the fuck? I had so much shit on there.

The biggest annoyance for me, aside from the loss of 3D Touch multitasking, is that search seems absolutely useless now.
Siri’s app suggestions when you pull down the search bar are just the eight most recent apps installed, instead of being frequently used apps for that time of day.
Searching for an app on the device doesn’t work until you type the complete and exact name!.

This stuff is working on my 7+, as far as I can tell. Results come up as I type, and the recommendations are not just the last 8 installed.

I updated on both...:(

Apple's still signing iOS 10, right?

so you COULD do an iOS 11 backup of one of your devices - probably your iPad - restore that one to iOS 10, screenshot your wishlist and once again update to iOS 11 and restore from backup.

a bit of a hassle, i guess..

Too much for a wishlist, yeah. Still, there is no good reason for that. Apple is always two steps forward, one step back.

So i caved and updated on my 7+, what a mistake. This shit is riddled with bugs. Man, i wish i stayed on 10.3.3....

wifi keeps turning on even though its off, folders on my screen keep opening even though i dont press on them, bunch of little glitches too like changing my wallpaper causes some screen glitches, and this new store...complete trash. And the battery did take a hit.

What a mistake

Try to Close everything out, restart the phone.

None of that is really normal for the update. Someone else said they had the WiFi thing at least and fixed it with a restart

Put the update on my 7+. Oh looks like the Podcast app got updated, maybe it's not a piece of garbage anymore. Nope preparing to download a single podcast for a couple hours now. GG Apple.

Might be useful to Watch owners asking about playback controls: https://daringfireball.net/2017/09/apple_watch_series_3

Second, there’s a new feature in WatchOS called “Auto-launch Audio Apps”. It’s in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, in the General: Wake Screen section. What happens with this is that when you initiate audio playback on your iPhone, if there’s a corresponding WatchOS app on your watch, when you raise your wrist that app is what you see, instead of your watch face. This was on by default with my review unit, which I set up as a new watch, and I noticed it while listening to podcasts in Overcast. Because I wasn’t expecting it, I was irritated at first, and thought about disabling it. But now that I know it’s there, I really like it. I don’t know how much of this to attribute to WatchOS 4, and how much to attribute to the performance improvements in Series 3, but there is zero lag involved. No spinner while the app launches or anything like that. When I play podcasts from my iPhone, my watch just automatically turns into a remote control for the audio playback. It’s nice.

Yeah, again, i strongly believe that they have copious amounts of usage data that proves that - while there's a small number of 'power users' that love certain features, the vast majority of iPhone owners simply doesn't.

So, as someone neither affected by the removal of the 3d touch multitasking gesture, nor the removal of the wishlist, i appreciate them trying to keep their user interfaces as clutter free as possible :/

Of course, sometimes they get a bit overzealous in their attempts to do so. But i'd rather lose a feature every now and then, than have our phone apps be as bloated as... iTunes ... *shudder*

I want to like Podcasts, but I listen in my work truck and for whatever reason the skip forward button on my older ford sync system jumps to the next podcast instead of 15 seconds or 30 seconds or whatever. Overcast doesn’t have that problem, so I guess I’m sticking with it.

Wow I just updated. I have a 9.7 Pro that I barely used since I'm used to Android and it became a giant FaceTime machine. I look at building/room designs all the time using my Surface Pro 2 (which is much heavier) and also need to annotate pdf's etc. Annotating was a pain and everyone was pushing me to buy the GoodReader but with iOS 11, my simple needs are met in the Notes app.
Also File Browser is amazing, getting closer to what I take for granted in Android. The fact it recognized and can browse through my Google Drive folders is fantastic.
Time to go update my iPhone 6 and hope it doesn't get even slower.

Can’t get AR to work on white tables. Had to get a pizza box lol not sure if it’s because I’m using an SE or anything but sucks.

Apparently MS mail is broken with the mail app on iOS 11. Not sure when this happened. I was running the beta for months without issue and as soon as it goes live, it's immediately broken. That implies a change was made in the last update that broke it.

I still think Apple is still mismanaging iOS wallpapers, we even just got some live ones removed for no reason but...

You guys realize that they just put back there the classic earth wallpaper and a black wallpaper so you can set one to the lock screen, the other to the home screen, and recreate the original iPhone look?

That’s awesome.

If I type 's', settings shows up. Like I said, do a hard reset (volume down + power). If that doesn't work, you need to backup to iCloud and then do a full reinstall.

Sometimes dumb shit like this happens on upgrade. On iOS 10 I had a problem where after using Safari all of my bookmarks would disappear until next reboot. It's frustrating because there are no error messages (whereas on Windows you'd get a bunch of nonsense errors that at least catch your attention), but after doing the rounds with Applecare online, that was the only solution.

(If you went into a store for AppleCare support this is what they will do: first a hard reset, then erase-all followed by a reinstall.)
Well unfortunately I only found this out after wiping my phone and doing a restore, which has somehow dropped my phone’s used space by 40GB so I’ll have to figure out what data is missing...

But Apple in all their wisdom have now tied in app search results to the “Search & Siri Suggestions” option.

So if you don’t want to be searching inside app data, the app does not show up in search at all.
For years, I have had this disabled for all apps because I only want to use search as an app launcher.

Holy shit, the screen video capture feature also captures audio. I was just watching Playstation Vue and was able to make perfect recordings. This will have to get patched because people will easily be able to copy Netflix movies in great quality.

I do get that, but wishlist honestly has zero reasons to be removed. It wasn't in the way. I honestly think it might hurt sales. Someone like me throws certain games out there on the list and decides to get them at a later point, not wanting to forget them. I get to them eventually. They aren't super important, otherwise, I'd keep tabs another way, but it's casual spending when I feel like it. Just refer back to the list. I for damn sure ain't gonna remember a lot of the names or developers names. I just think it's a useless culling.

Updated my 5th gen iPad last night (the newer cheaper model) and my god, the new App store is fucking atrocious. They must think people using it all have glaucoma cos the font size is huge.

I love the new Dock though, it's already full to it's limit :)

basically when you close wifi via the slide down quick menu, it doesnt close it in the settings menu. Thank god for that public testing.

It's even worse on my OG Ipad Pro lol. So much wasted space.

You can't turn off WiFi and Bluetooth via the control center toggles. They are just not connected. Just take a look in Settings and find them activated.

Edit: To visualize it better, you can only toggle between the state on top and in the middle. The one on the bottom can only be achieved by going into settings and turning wifi/bluetooth completely off.
