iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

so how do i do the hdr stuff on my ipad pro? I see some of my titles have a "dolby vision" tag. Does that mean that as long as i have download hdr toggled in the itunes settings it'll do it?
you have to turn on HDR in Settings->Video I believe (it has to be on)

Also side note, does the new apple tv support hdr10 or only dolby vision? My new 4k tv is just hdr10...I really hope all these new 4k movies on itunes don't only have dolby vision.
both. Logan for example is HDR. However it doesn't matter as I believe your Apple TV 4K will output it to your UHD TV at whatever negotiated HDR protocol your TV supports.

It also sucks that it looks like my copy of guardians of the galaxy 2 isn't updated to the 4k/hdr version. I wonder why?

so there was a bit of miscommunication about this. It was initially reported as "Disney isn't onboard with iTunes for UHD", which is true. HOWEVER, going over to Vudu, Disney's UHD availability is virtually non-existent. GOTG2 is UHD on Vudu... and not a whole lot more (4K or UHD). So Disney in general is just not really committed to UHD on any of the services for now. We'll see how that changes going forward.

For those looking for catalog titles in 4K.. Ghostbusters, and two Bond films are the oldest 4K titles I found (Diamonds are Forever.. and a Moore film). Also Goodfellas is the oldest UHD title I found.

I'm on transit and keep getting the Apple Driving DND notification —even once while I was using Apple Maps directions iirc. Lol wtf so sloppy and annoying.

umm.. don't turn on Automatic. It is literally working as it's supposed to. You are on on a vehicle moving. The phone isn't reading your mind whether you're driving or not.

Disney just jumped on the UHD bandwagon, that's why you don't see any titles.
GotG 2 is actually their first UHD title, and some future releases are confirmed (like Star Wars)

They really need to jump in with Apple.

At least you have a mobile Facebook site. The Instagram website sucks and having to use the Instagram app for iPad sucks.
Yeah this is blowing my mind. I recently started using Instagram but it sucks on the small screen of my 5S. Opened the app on iPad expecting a great experience but lol nah. It's not even blown up in a non-iPad optimized way, it's literally just the iPhone version running at 2x.

The scroll up menu is actually way better than the last, despite being jumbled. At least you don’t need to scroll to the right to access music. That was the dumbest shit ever in iOS10.

Assume I'm not the only one with sluggish/jerky app opening? Feel like I'm on a fucking Android again. 6S Plus here.

You can turn that off in Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion. I did that in the early days of iOS10 / 6S+ and never looked back. Same for my 7+. The phone seems to run smoother with that option enabled, and I've grown to prefer the look of it too.

On iPad Mini 4 I was using Safari full screen there and I went to slide in from the right and up til now it’s been inactive... but this time my last used secondary app slid in from the right (third party calculator app)... I slid it away again and pulled it back again from the right. Then I tried putting Tweetbot in it’s place and sliding that away.. it didn’t slide back in again. What the hell's going on here?

Can you still slide back in your last used secondary app or not? Seems like the functionality is still kinda there but it never works apart from this one random instance..

Has anyone run into problems with AirDrop since the update?
I've had trouble connecting to anyone with the "contacts only" option and everyone I've tried connecting to has had to set their device to "everyone".

Overall I’m pleased with the changes. Two caveats: I prefer the old podcasts view with smaller icons so I could see at a glance which shows had new episodes.

The second is just baffling to me. On apple watch they removed the ability to browse and select music from the iPhone. Only pause/skip tracks is available now, switching playlist or album or whatever now requires using the phone. Huge convenience just removed for no good reason.

This has only been an issue for me between iOS 10 and iOS 11 devices. It worked fine between iOS 11 and macOS as well as 11 and 11.

Installed it on my 6S, pretty snappy so far and I'm used to a lot of the changed after playing on the iPad yesterday.

Regarding the Podcasts app, is there a way to reorder my subs?

Does anyone know you can do this...

In safari opening a link in a new tab now takes a bit longer thanks to the drag and drop thing initiating at first before the menu finally shows up... BUT.. once you have the draggable link you can drag it straight to the new tab “+” sign to do it that way perhaps fractionally quicker!

Btw they seriously need to stop changing the space bar on the right into an undo button when you do certain things. It’s annoying as fuck as I’m constantly undoing reams of text trying to type a space in...

Man, having to swipe away every notification one at a time is annoying as fuck. I can’t consistently get that “X” to show up on the notifications screen to clear them all away. Tried restarting my device as well but that hasn’t made a difference.

Or tap with two fingers on a link to open in new tab. ;)

Google Photos has updated to support HEIF photos and HEVC videos.
Twitter has updated to better support Smart Invert Colors as well.

That's really odd.

I'm a little confused by this, as I don't have my iPad handy.
Dragging a link?

This different from just holding a link, and selecting "Open in New Tab"?

I'm OK with it since I only ever turn those off to disconnect from networks or devices.

3D touch the x.

oops skipped a word there.

im wondering how to delete imessage apps themselves. (the ones that dont put icons on your home screen at all and can only be found in imessage) looks like in beta you could swipe on the app when editing the app bar in imessage, but that isnt working at all for me.

i know in ios10 you could hold down the icon and delete like you would any app, but you cant do that in ios11 at all apparently.

I don't use iMessage apps, but the only way I found to delete them is to scroll right to the end of the apps list, tap the More button, then delete from there.

Also, it may have some battery-saving benefits, as the LTE radio draws more juice than wifi. I had a use case often during the beta where I'd turn off the wifi connection to force the iPhone to use LTE when my home internet was maxed out on bandwidth. When I'd wake up the next day, it would be back on wifi again. There may be some "smart" behavior happening there.

I think it's fair to say the new behavior is mostly for less-savvy users though, as most of them don't know that those services use wifi. (some of them actually use direct wifi, which would still use the wifi radio)

It's been like that for years. I don't know why they haven't made a native iPad app yet. Theoretically, it should just a great experience on the iPad.

Super valid in my opinion. Turning off those radios has barely, barely any effect on battery life anyway. I’m a big fan of the WiFi change in particular, since I only ever turned it off to disconnect from a spotty network. I didn’t need the whole radio off

No free HDR videos or anything like that on iTunes to check out? Would love to see how HDR content looks on an ipad, but I’m not buying a movie just to see

Finding quite a few apps with issues.

ComiXology took about fifty tries to sign into Amazon, but that sign in bug seems to be affecting some other apps too.

CarPlay: Pros - launches quicker and has slightly updated functionality - Pros: Hitching, weird conflicts with my car’s MMI, and Amazon Music and Iheartradio are toast. Don’t work unless I disconnect from CarPlay.

it was on Manual.

Here's a longstanding annoyance I've had: is there any way to have a sender's iMessages only trigger a sound the first time until you check your phone? I have this one friend who treats iMessage like IM and sends five short messages to complete one thought, so I get five separate audio alerts. It drives me crazy, and I feel like Messages used to only do a sound alert for the first missed message.

I’ve never gotten push notifications for new podcasts or any sort of notification when someone posts a new one. Does this fix that or is there a setting I’m missing? I have notifications on for them in the app.

Battery went from 100% to 33% in an hour and half. Listened to music on Spotify and used my Outlook mail app during this time span. iPhone 6 user.

This is the problem with Apple. They make these software updates only compatible with the newest models. It's a fucking joke.

I know it’s a small detail, but apps not showing the version number in the updates list seems like a dumb oversight.
