iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

I know it’s a small detail, but apps not showing the version number in the updates list seems like a dumb oversight.

Yeah, I liked to note that.
Especially when apps made a big change and moved to a new numbered release.
Minor but I enjoyed it.

The whole Update screen is bad though, everything is too big.
Giant icons, text, and Update button. They barely fit 3 apps on the screen at once.

For the record, battery life on my first day with watchOS 4 on my Gen 1 Watch has been great. I’m at 47% right now at 8:30pm after a 25min workout. That’s better even than what I got on some other days with OS 3. Plus I toyed around with the Siri watch face and flashlight as well so I probably used it more than on average. New activity ring animations are dope as well 👌

Yeah, same with apps in the purchased list. Sometimes I like to check up on apps I no longer have on my phone and see if they’ve made any big updates.

I’m really not a fan of their new UI in general. Like you said, everything is just too big and cartoonish. I hated it when they implemented it into the music app, and it hasn’t gotten any better.

you can say that again!

I'm a little confused by this, as I don't have my iPad handy.
Dragging a link?

This different from just holding a link, and selecting "Open in New Tab"?

Yeah, because every link and other things are now "drag and drop" enabled, the link becomes a floating item that can be dragged directly into other apps. You need to stay still on the link for even longer now to bring up that menu that I used to use all the time. But because you can drag the link first it's possible to drag it straight to the new tab + sign and open it up that way. Ever so slightly quicker.

Someone else replied to me though that you can tap with two fingers to open a link instantly, which I'm guessing is a short cut that's been there for ages which I've never known about (seriously these touch operating systems are getting a bit ridiculous with all the hidden tricks like this that many people)!

Oh that's interesting and makes sense. I haven't done that yet on my iPad but see what you mean.
The two finger trick I didn't know about either! Won't help me with tiny links though, but I'll practice that.

Is there a way to disable the feature where when you take a screenshot, it appears in the bottom corner of the screen till you either click it or a bunch of time passes?

Not that I know of but you can just swipe it to the left to save it and dismiss the floating image

Everyone seen this? Why would you do this Apple? Makes no sense.

Turning Off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in iOS 11's Control Center Doesn't Actually Turn Off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth - VICE
https://apple.news/AnxludUMeTyGtVhWCz5RGzw

because what apple is doing accomplishes precisely what 99.9% of users are looking for. Disconnect from devices, prevent from connecting to devices, and reduce battery consumption, all while continuing to allow advanced connectivity features between apple devices like Hotspot, Continuity/Handoff, Pencil, Watch, Airdrop, etc

The number of users who need the radios disabled without just enabling Airplane Mode is probably insanely low. Conversely, most will probably disable wifi or BT, and then wonder why their Pencil doesn't work or their Watch is not connected.

I really want to get a new iPad Pro but I'm torn between the 9 and 12 inch.

Any advice?

10.5" It is the current God tablet. The screen is so ridiculously good and the A10X combined with 4GB RAM... It is perfectly setup for all of these productivity updates coming to iOS over the next couple of years.

One cool thing that seems to have happened with this update is that it fixed my weird WiFi issue with my iPhone. A few updates ago, probably last year at some point, my phone started to have this issue where a page wouldn't load at all. Internet would just screech to a halt. I'd have to flick off the WiFI and the page or whatever I was trying to do would load almost instantly. Then I could turn WiFI back on and go for a while again. Haven't had that issue yet.

OMG finally numbers and some special characters reachable directly on the keyboard without switching modes.

I love it so far on the iPad.

I know it’s a small detail, but apps not showing the version number in the updates list seems like a dumb oversight.

I feel like version numbers have gotten mostly useless especially with companies like Facebook updating their app like every single week with the same old "performance improvements and bug fixes" generic releases notes.

And many others are just plain wacky with the version numbers. Like Google Drive is at version 4.2017.35501, Gmail is version 5.0.170827, Chrome is at version 61.0.3163.73.

I'm glad they hid that personally, it's still just a tap away if you really want to see it.

If you want feedback on IOS11 on iPod touch 6, I have one, so far :

- Weird glitch on startup, battery show as completely depleted, fix itself after a few seconds.
- Battery seemed to drain faster but that's because the behavior of the control center has changed, bluetooth (which I don't use) is still on, turning it off under settings fix it.
- Animations slightly slower than on IOS10 IMO, I suspect it will be fixed in the future releases.

You generally don't need to. iOS apps are automatically closed when the phone needs more memory, and are usually "paused" the moment you suspend them. The only time I "close" apps is when an app has crashed or is otherwise stuck.

This. iOS isn't Android, where background processes are a free-for-all. This is also part of why iOS performs better with less RAM.

The ability to drag & drop links to Instapaper in split screen is a god send.

Swiftkey now allows to save copied text.

The iPad Pro has become absolutely fantastic for my workflow.

Isn‘t Safari View Controller supposed to share cookies with Safari? For some reason, Telegram is using SVC since I updated to iOS 11 (Is there a way to disable this?), and contrary to Safari, I‘m not logged in to a certain site.

edit: Uh.. or has Telegram always used SVC to open links? I actually can’t remember.

Is there a way to disable the feature where when you take a screenshot, it appears in the bottom corner of the screen till you either click it or a bunch of time passes?

Swipe left.

I actually like this method a lot more than the notification which was hard to reach with my lil hands even on the non-Plus. The problem will always be wanting to take multiple screenshots quickly and having the snap preview cover portions of the screen, you would think it just wouldn't show up in the next screen grab, or you could turn the option on or off to have it show up in the screen grab, or you could turn it off completely.

I've been super impressed with iOS 11 btw. Feel like it revitalized my 7 a bit.

I got a 6s Plus and double click home button to pay doesn’t work when my phone is already unlocked. Did this change? I swear I could do this before.

Why is the mainstream media ignoring the elephant in the room here?

All these new features, all this new tech, but nobody is brave enough to discuss the most shocking mistake Apple has ever made.

Being able to drag and drop passwords from 1Password into apps is a godsend. I am neither here nor there on iOS 11 for my iPhone, but it is amazing for my iPad. Feels like a whole new device!

No. Might have been new OS feature first time activation notification? I don't see it again after i finally opened it one time

yeah it's been forever since I first installed 11. I know like beta 2 DnDwD was screwed up... where it would stop ALL controls from the phone when it turned on.. which sucked because my car stereo auto-resumes background audio when it connects.. but in beta 2 DnDwD prevented it from starting the music... but for the last couple betas, DnDwD has worked perfectly.

BT performance seems to be a lot better in iOS11 on my 6 at least. My smartlock performance is a lot better now.

all around in fact. when my ipad isn't at home, my apple TV controlling my fish tank light (BT plug AC plug) was REALLY spotty, even though the ATV is only ~25-30' away. Since last week (GM) my ipad has usually not been in the house at sunset and the ATV turns off the fish tank every time.

so yeah.. I think it did improve BT performance for HomeKit.

Speaking of HomeKit, I see sometime in the past many months Philips updated the Hue bridge to FINALLY expose the White Ambience lights as color capable to the official Home app.. OMFG.. I thought this was apple's fault and was pissed I still couldn't control the white balance on my bulb's from the native app. So on a whim I opened the Hue app and saw an update for my bridge. Now the "color" option shows up in the native home app (and the CC HomeKit area also)

Talking about calculators, which one is the best one to have on iPad?

I know this but I like to clean up the app switcher screen occasionally. I can’t remove them all at once?

Nope

PCalc. Pricey but he developer is great and always introduces the newest features, including some really silly AR stuff in the newest update, but also useful things like drag and drop

But really that AR mode is legit

The mistake of ever leaving the round button Braun ripoff calculator in the first place? :p

Edit: OH not including it on iPad. Gotcha.

Hey everyone.

There any reason why the clock on my lock screen is gone? Turned my phone off & on earlier today to fix it and it was showing, but now it’s gone again lol.

Same when pulling down to see my notifications/notification center.

On a regular 7.

I think Apple should add an option to limit the switcher to only the 5 or 10 most recent apps. It would help quell OCD and help discourage unnecessary app "management " by the user

DON'T EVEN SUGGEST THIS.

I use app switcher all the time to scroll back through the week.

people just need to chill a bit and properly understand how iOS works.

Just create an encrypted iTunes backup and do it, Apple is still signing the latest iOS 10 version so you can downgrade if you run into any major issues on your phone. My 5S was doing just fine today.
Cant. Made a Password encrypted Backup and now I cant do shit with my iTunes Backups.

I don't recall being able to do that with the phone unlocked.

Buuuuut at least now you can add the wallet to control center for speedy access

I'm really liking iOS 11, both on my iPhone 7 and iPad Air 2. It overall has a better and more responsive feel than iOS 10 (which was good itself). The new command center is great and I like the updated switching between apps on the iPad.
