iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

It took me maybe a week of use to understand it. Following that, never failed me even a single time.

In what way was it unreliable for you?

I could never get the 3D Touch switching working reliably on my regular iPhone 7 with silicone bumper case.

I'm guessing it's because the bumper case adds a slightly raised lip around the edges making it impossible to touch the edge of the phone's screen. Never had any problems with the back swipe gesture, but 3d touch switching was near impossible for me to activate.

I don't use a case and it wasn't that reliable for me either. I still liked it so it would be great if they could improve it when they implement it again.

New from the beta/due to apps updating, but apps can now pop up a star rating and review in the app.

More importantly: apps are now required to use this API to request reviews in-app, there's a limit to how often they are allowed to ask, and you can opt out of being asked in the App Store settings altogether.

I‘ve encountered a lot of little bugs already, this is the latest one:

In the accessibility settings you can adjust the 3D Touch sensitivity. Reducing the amount of pressure required may help.
I’ve never found it to be unreliable on a 6s or 7 Plus, even with a case or screen protector attached.

3D Touch switching was hit or miss with a case for me. Those of you who used it all the time — caseless?

Hit or miss for me too. When I would try to get used to it I’d eventually just fall back to home button.

Keyboard and mouse is my primary 3D Touch use case

I take all my school notes using an app called Squid on Android. It is really great, not sure where this idea that Android doesn't have good note apps comes from.

Edit: these posts are super off topic for this OT though so I'm done, can continue Ina PM if you wish

Squid is fine, but utterly barebones compared with what’s on iPad. If you’re interested then look at the likes of Notability, Goodnotes, Nebo or Liquidtext for examples.

Love being able to turn on airplane mode without turning off Bluetooth and WiFi, great for subway rides

I am really confused about this, but you might be able to explain:

What's the use case you're describing here - what does this mean on a subway ride? Like, what can and can't you/the phone do? And what's the benefit?

That was one of the first things I did, changed the sensitivity to "Light" (least amount of pressure). It didn't help for me. I have no problems activating 3D Touch from anywhere else in the OS (keyboard cursor thing, home screen, in apps, etc). It's only the app switching gesture that was super unreliable for me.

I will give it another try when they re-add it.

Can disable cell antenna hunting for nonexistent/poor service underground without turning off Bluetooth and disrupting a one’s tunes/podcasts.

Stays on cell network, only disables LTE data. So presumably it would still be a battery drain looking for non-existent voice/sms network.

The “trick” is enable airplane mode, then turn Bluetooth and WiFi back on. Takes like two seconds

Edit: I see you mean in general not the new cell button in control center

Since updating, when I use Spotify, I can’t control the music from my lock screen anymore. I have to go into the app to control the music. Also, when I double tap to play/pause music on my AirPods, it plays music from my library instead. Any suggestions?

They got rid of the wishlist on the app store.... fuck man.

I had like 20 apps on there I was eventually going to buy, fuck off now I ain't buying shit.

How about the iTunes Store? I'm always checking my wish list to see if movies I want go on sale.

Having an odd issue with syncing music to my Watch on watchOS 4 and iOS 11. Under "Automatically add" in the Watch's Music settings, all I have is "Heavy Rotation", and then there's an eternal spinning icon beneath that where other playlists (new music, chill mix, etc) should be. Anyone else seeing this?

You're quite a bit late on that :P

I worked an all nighter and was sleeping, shut up

Yes, I am as well. I saw the mixes pop up once like they’re supposed to but since then, nothing

I don't understand the new screen capture on iOS 11 on the iPhone.

It like... saves it to the bottom left corner. Then I have to click on it and save? So many extra steps.

What's the point, and can I just have screen caps go straight to my photos like it always used to?

Battery life on my 7+ is BAD now.

Yep - same. It's now been 2 days.

I've ALWAYS come home at 5pm with at least ~30-40% battery left. Usually go to bed at 10-20%.

I've died completely by 4pm the last two days.

It still works like that, you never have to click on it. That preview in the bottom left corner goes away after a few seconds, or you can just swipe it away immediately and those screenshots will be in your Photos app still.

It only prompts you to save/discard the screenshot after you go into that markup/edit mode.

Just swipe it to the left and it will save in Photos.

Most people took screenshots to highlight something, put text, crop, etc.
This saves a lot of those steps, and gives you the option of deleting the screenshot after sending sharing it.

Ah - thanks guys - I'm an idiot. This afternoon at work I swiped up, right, and down...

... just needed to do left :-/

I thought the AppleTV widget accessible from the Control Center sounded like an awesome addition. The ability to control it without having to unlock my phone and fire up an app? Sign me up! Turns out it doesn’t work with either of my generation 3 AppleTVs. From reading around, was the same case in the beta and this current release: current AppleTVs only. That’s a pretty shrewd cutoff that needs to be patched. At least the damn app still works.

I thought iOS11 was meant to bring in some social features in the music app like what your friends are listening too. I've not noticed anything like that.
