iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

Installed today on my iPhone 7. Hopefully battery life doesn’t take a hit, but I won’t know for a few days at least how it compares.

Seems pretty slick so far otherwise though. Not really a huge change, but I’m sure there’s features I don’t know about or haven’t discovered yet.

iOS11 is so bugged for iPhone 6. First of all the keyboard is now as bad as it was for iOS 10. Severe lag so I can't even tell what I'm typing because the keyboard software can't keep up. I would make you guys a video but I have been trying for the past 30 minutes to get screen recorder to work I am so fucking pissed.

I've had to restart my iPhone 5 times to try and get it to work. When I press on the start button it will countdown like normal and the red bar will appear. But then in the control center it still says start screen recorder like I haven't just started it, then when I click on the red bar I get caught in a never-ending loop of "stop screen recorder". Restarting my phone doesn't fix this either. If I do get the red bar to go away the control center will say that its still screen recording even though the bar is gone! And trying to stop it from the control center puts me in a another loop. All the while my phone is fucking so hot its about to explode. jfc

Also the apple tv remote thing in cc doesn't work for me.

Just upgraded my iPhone 6S to iOS 11. After I entered my iCloud password, it asked me for the password that I use to unlock my Mac (2015 Macbook Pro running Sierra) in order to finish setting iCloud up. I've never seen that prompt before -- why did it need that?

Do you have an Apple Watch paired with that iPhone? You can unlock your Mac with one. I can't remember if it asked for the Mac password during setup, but maybe.

If you have two factor authentication turned on, some of your iCloud data is encrypted by the passwords/passcodes of your other devices

Nope, I don't have an Apple Watch.

Interesting. I do have 2FA turned on. Is there any documentation on this feature? I'm curious how it works.

Was my phone talking directly to my Mac over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and using the password as authentication? Or was it sending the password to Apple's servers as part of a decryption key along with its own credentials? If the latter, what happens if I update the system password on my Mac? Does it sync the new one to iCloud and update the decryption key?

Yes it’s over the internet and yes if you were to change it the decryption key gets updated. It may not be right away however.

after an initial period where everything seemed fine, my 6s is noticably stuttery when doing basic tasks - switching between apps, jumping to apps from notifications etc. Just take the edge off and make it feel not pleasant to use.

Hopefully they bring performance improvements in an update because the 6s should be more than powerful enough to handle this kind of usage.

Are you sure you’re not running out of storage space? I had the same issue on my 6S+ until I made room for 3go. Now it’s as fast as it used to.

Lol charged to 100% last night. Down to 73% this morning with 10 hours of standby and 13 minutes of usage. Actual usage was 0 as I unplugged the charger right as I went to sleep.

iOS11 baby, such quality

edit: i know the first time you upgrade it syncs a lot of stuff in the background, but if youre passed that initial install, theres no excuse for this.

Yep. It’s entirely software. My 8+ stutters here and there too. My 6s seems to perform at the same level. Apple really dropped the ball with iOS 11.

You can turn off auto-join specific WiFi's. If you go to the settings app WiFi section and click the “i” on the specific WiFi network just turn off auto-join. It’s good for those public WiFi networks you use once in a while but don’t want to always connect to automatically.

Thank you, what a simple solution that was right under my nose, this worked perfectly.

I can definitely tell the battery life is considerably worse on my 10.5" iPad Pro now, though admittedly it doesn't really matter to me cause I never really carry my tablets around, just use em at home.

But I'm planning on getting an iPhone 8 around Christmas, and these problems better be fixed by then.

This battery life issue is super weird. On my 8+, the battery life has been absolutely amazing. ON my 7, it was complete shit.

The lack of full-screen album artwork on the lock screen/control center is extremely disappointing to say the least.

It might not be a functional change, but it was nice to look at dammit!

Been pretty underwhelmed with the 8+ battery life to be honest.
Coming from a 6 I was hoping to be amazed with it.

Wow. I was not paying attention that this was a major is update and installed last night. Was pleasantly surprised by some of the snappiness and ui changes but holy balls does my battery drain quick now. Like double the speed. Will sift through thread for tips when I have time

Definitely improved CarPlay speed and functionality but still some serious bugs and hitches. Music apps have about a fifty fifty chance of working.

Is anyone else getting a weird bug where app updates don’t seem to happen right away? I just got an update for Netflix but it says it came out days ago.

Finally installed it on my 7 last night and it's been working fine so far... Two things tho

-The animations for unlocking and opening/closing the apps are not super smooth?

-I feel like the phone is overall a lot... "brighter" but not necessarily talking about the actual Brightness setting. I feel like there's a contrast setting somewhere that was cranked up. You know... Like blacks looking more like greys, etc.

I’m sick to death of having to restart my iPhone 7 every time it decides to freeze on app-startup and, once back to normal, delete the on-screen volume control and more (including ringer noise, which last week actually made me late for work after turning off my alarm sound).

I rather frequently have the issue that my 5s doesn't charge when plugged in, even though it displays the lightning icon in the status bar. Removing the cable and plugging it in again usually fixes this.

Ohhhh, that's interesting. My wife's 5s has been having the same issue, and we thought it was just down to it being old - we've had it for 3 years. Is there a chance it's down to the new update? I mean, it's irrelevant for her, since she just got a 7, but I'm curious.

No, I‘ve already had this issue with iOS 10.

I'm REALLY not a fan of the new small notification style lock screen display for Google Play Music instead of the usual full screen cover art with the controls at the top. Not only is the new thing a lot uglier and less functional but it's also bugged. More often than not the time bar is not even moving while music is playing.

Yeah, was about to post about this, too. The Controllcenter for music was bugged the whole day yesterday. Needed to reboot the iPhone for at least three times to make it work again.

iOS 11 has been giving me a whole lotta issues. One of the most annoying is it auto rotating my home screen and being unable to get it back to portrait- even with the stupid thing being orientation locked!

Didn’t notice on my 7 plus, but on 8 plus I’ve been running into performance or animation hitches where everything seems to respond at half speed. Persists across apps. Usually clears up pretty quickly. Never saw that behavior on ios10.

I've noticed that on my 8 plus as well.

Hopefully 11.1 fixes some of those issues.
