- How to Set Up and Configure All the New Features in iOS 5

iOS 5 is out and there are plenty of new features, some of which require a little bit of set up. We'll walk you through the entire process so you're up and running in just a few minutes. Click on the feature you want to set up for a video walkthrough and written instructions as well.

Newstand is a bit disappointing in that it's just a folder for Magazine and Newspaper apps.
I thought it'd be a bit more elegant since I already had that.

Most of the mag apps have terrible and slow UI, was hoping it'd be a standard.

Nice, should be only an hour and a half left. [edit] nice edit expendable, lol. Can't wait, hope iTunes finished before then...

it's jumping between 'about an hour' and '2 hours' left... not sure how i'll manage DLing 800fuckingMBs. xd

We should all share contact information in this thread so we can know where GAFers are at all times with the Find My Friends app!

No we shouldn't...

I updated my iTunes last night to 10.5. I am amazed that it was a smooth process (Win7 here), and it did not lose my library or any playlists!!

feels good man

My professional opinion is that iBooks should have been expanded for Newsstand.

I like that. Or at least lett me put Newsstand in another folder so I can have all my reading apps in one place.

OK! You start!

Did the same too. It's ready and waiting for me to get home from work.

Looking forward to the update today for both my iPhone and iPad. It'll give me something to do until my 4S arrives on Friday. Lots of great stuff coming in iOS 5.

I didn't see anything. If it's there it isn't incredibly obvious like the Genius sidebar was when that was a new feature.

it's an optional download apparently - like the old 'mobile me control panel' thing. it would/should appear in software update, but it isnt for me. you get to it via the control panel...

welp, maybe today itll get pushed out.

Will iOS 5 suck on a 3Gs? Because my phone works great right now and I don't need a other iOS 4 fiasco. The new features are cool, but I don't want this thing to become useless laggy shit

the nice thing about newstand (and you could make the argument that iOS should have had this for a while) is that it allows for background downloading of items without user action. no need to get a notification, then open the app, then wait for 200 MB to download and process before reading.

more than just the pretty shelves, this is the killer feature that makes reading more care-free.

I don't find the adobe apps to be slow (nat geo, wired, etc) when i browse but i do hope that they will move away from static images to allow for selectable text, smaller file sizes and voice over capability.

I thought iOS5 was supposed to be more memory efficient? I have a 3rd gen touch so I'll be in the same boat.

Can anyone explain how iCloud will work in terms of actually streaming music? I know they're going to have that music match thing for $25 but will I then be able to stream everything from my cloud on my phone to then free up some HDD space? Or is it really just meant to be a back-up utility? They didn't touch on this at all during the iPhone conference that I noticed.

I love using my Amazon Cloud at work and hope that is a true competitor to it and not just online storage. The fact you can't use it (Amazon's service) on the iPhone is frustrating. :(

iCloud and Music Match don't stream. They just make sure you have all the same music on all your different devices.

Also asked this in the iOS 5 beta thread, but has anyone subscribed to iTunes Match with 10.5.1? I have and it says that it's matched all of my music, but none of it is available on iPhone or iPad.

I already asked earlier, but nobody answered (probably bc everyone else is smart and waits for official release). >.<

iCloud does not stream music. The only new thing it will bring is downloading you iTunes music as often as you want.

Do you have iOS 5 on both your iPhone and iPad already, and have iCloud configured on both?

Anyone successfully upgrade a MobileMe account to iCloud? Tells me my account is not eligible even though I am a registered developer and the documentation doesn't seem to be released yet.

I looked at the info page and the wording leads me to believe they will allow you to stream actually. Perhaps they realized how useless the tool is without it?

Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it on any of your devices. Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.

Hopefully it is a true stream and the store part isn't necessary. My 32 GB just doesn't cut it due to my music collection which is already only at about 1/3 on the device. I am curious if it will be its own app or a separate "tab" under the now music (instead of iPod) button.

You're going to update the GM to the GM?

The Gold Master release is always number slightly different than the actual public release, and in the past there have been a few very minor changes.

How do you update apps in iOS5. In the store it lists all the apps I need to updte but there is no update all and when I press the icons nothing happens...

iOS 5 GM is causing Facebook to crash. Gonna update regular iOS 5 when it releases.
So the GM is version 5.0 9A334 (for 3,1 aka iPhone 4), if that name is different in the official version, what does it mean exactly?
