i'm going to if i bricked my girl's iPhone doing this update, she will probably kill me before I have a chance though

name: iphone
capacity, software v, serial number : n/a

3014 error

I do the restore process and I get the same 3104 error, when the bar is 70% through on the iPhone

Its apples authentication servers not responding. After the update your iPhone needs to authenticate. Wait till later tonight or tomorrow.

iPhone is all sorted but now my iTunes is restoring my apps but it has been for the last hour. I think it's broken. I tried closing it through Task Manager but it's still showing "restoring iPhone apps" I can't click anything else on iTunes. :(

Got an error 5000 when updating, it ended up deleting all my music.... Even after a restore.

*SIGH*

ios5 seems ok so far, there a way to remove stock updates from the msg center?

I hope 3rd parties can create widgets for the notification dropdown. I can see that being super useful.

i balled up and pressed restore.

got internal error but none of my apps were lost! FUCK YES.

im back at 4.3.2

Ill update this fucking shit once it stops giving error. There is a reason why i havent switched to lion.

I pray that's all the problem is, the phone right now is basically a paper weight

You an remove stocks (and weather) in the notification settings.

Okay, mine backs up and then errors and says it can't back up. Ugh! So annoying! I want something new to do with my evening!!

I hate the new tabbed browsing in Safari. I vastly prefer landscape mode and the 1cm extra space it takes up moght not sound like much, but it feels really cramped to me. Wish it would at least dissapear when there's only one tab open!
It's barely taking up any extra space. There used to be a title bar. That's gone now. Whatever cramped feeling you're having is nearly the same as the not-cramped feeling you had before.

So, I'm trying out Newstand, how do I see my magazine? I downloaded Edge, tried to buy an issue in the app, and I think I did, but I can't find any status. Will it alert me when the issue is downloaded? Does Newstand only show an app for each publication or will each issue show up on the shelf? I think Apple needs to categorize Newstand in the app store too rather than putting everything under Newstand.

It fucking kills me how Apple can never get this iOS update process to roll out smoothly. I wasted and hour and a half on my lunch trying get iOS 5 onto both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. No luck on either one. At least I didn't brick my iPhone.

This reminds me if when I bought my first iPhone, the 3G, on day one of it's release. It was basically a shiny, brand new, brick for 12 hours since Apple's servers were fucked.

So iChat won't connect to AIM now with the latest version of Lion for me?

Anyone else experiencing issues?

Off the top of my head, it doesn't mention that Photo Stream needs to upload over WiFi. It mentions it downloads over WiFi but not upload. There doesn't seem to be any description on how data under documents & data differs from the data you back up under Storage & Backup. Does that data under documents & data take a hit to your data cap? If you have Photo Stream turned on and do a WiFi sync back up, do you have the photos stored twice on your computer? Trying to remember what else was coming up in previous discussions in the beta thread.
Not every FAQ is all encompassing. The majority of the questions people have about iCloud that I've seen so far in this thread are all answered in those two links though.

The help site mentions Wi-Fi.
Photo Stream automatically uploads the photos to iCloud, and then downloads them to your other devices (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet).

It mentions that documents use your 5GB storage.

Your iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage for Mail, Documents, and your iCloud Backup. Your purchased music, apps, books, and TV shows, as well as your Photo Stream, don’t count against the 5 GB of free storage.

Tweeting photos works better than I expected. It uses pics.twitter.com (Photobucket partner service) so it's official. Thumbnails of tweeted photos also show up in Facebook if you have them integrated. The phone even "tweets" at you when it send one. As in, the phone actually makes a bird tweeting sound!

My only complaints so far with iOS5 are that I can't selectively delete photos from Photostream and they separated music and video into two different apps on the iPhone.

I think the key is to just wait it out until their servers stop getting hammered. I imagine people updating tomorrow will have a much smoother experience.

Well they're trying: this will be the last time anyone ever has to connect to iTunes to update. Everything will come wirelessly now.

so, photostream. i got the icloud control panel all setup on my computer, and it's supposed to now pull my photos down from my phone (i have it turned on on my phone).

does my phone need to be plugged in, or just on wifi? i swear i will get this thing working...

Just wi-fi. Give it a moment after you take the photo to notice and download.

Interesting - GIS confirms that it's about 5mm. Must be the darker shade of the tabs messing with my brain.

If the device you're using is work critical, wouldn't it be.. I dunno.. logical and reasonable to wait a bit before updating, if you're not in the mood to put up with fuckups? It's ALWAYS been like this. Apple has launched a billion updates today, and their servers are expectedly getting raped. Have some patience and willpower, wait a day or two, and chances are the process will go much more smoothly. You all know damn well millions of people are probably updating/activating their devices. Yet you take that risk, and bitch at the top of your lungs when shit expectedly breaks. No company on the planet can get something of this scale to run smoothly for everyone. You know apple's servers would be 'fucked', yet you went ahead and took the risk anyway, even with your past experiences which apparently taught you nothing. Especially with the massive iCloud roll-out, I can't even imagine all the stuff happening server side. This isn't magic. Deal with it.

Any new photos you take with your iOS device are uploaded to iCloud and added to your Photo Stream.

it's new photos only. your already-on-your-phone photos arent added to the 'stream'. tada.

You know, for people who post on a gaming message board, the lack of tech-saviness and inability to follow simple instructions and read warning dialogs here blows my mind. Everyone constntly bitches at Apple for dumbing down everything, yet apparently it's never enough. People constantly asking the same things over and over, easily answered on Apple's official site. Be mad at yourself, not apple. It's what it told you it was going to do. You can just restore from backup. Or redownload from iCloud. All your apps are there. No need to throw a fit.

edit: I don't feel like having a discussion about this so basically the update process is extremely janky and glitchy and Apple isn't perfect so calm down.

I didn't have any issues updating my iPad. Fast download, smooth process.

I don't like with they did with the music player. It's going to take some getting used to. Unless someone knows how to make it show albums in a list format as opposed to an album cover view.

See a few posts down asking about it already. I think a simple one stop FAQ would be nice compared to having 6 links to different things. The part about Photo Stream isn't clear. The (via WiFi or Ethernet) implies that's only the download because it's attached to download and there isn't Ethernet on the iPhone or iPad. Not to mention where Apple put the setting seems to be among things that update over 3G. It was something that was confusing in the beta thread till it was pointed out in the beta thread.

And then there's this:

What? I had no idea. I thought it would stream what I have currently. So it won't even push them to my PC as a back up either?

Are you fucking shitting me. Hours of backing up my stuff, then finally finished "iTunes can't update your iPhone" *BAM*.

Now I clicked again on update, "Preparing for backup", *backs shit up again*

WHY???

3GS btw.

Were you updating it on a computer other than the computer you sync on? Because iTunes specifically tells you "Yo dude you're going to lose your apps and music" if you try to do that.
Is there a way to change the computer I want to sync to? I now use a different computer than the one I originally setup my iPhone on and did backups and such. Do I need to deactivate iTunes on the old computer or something?

Oh, I totally understand the issue with the scale of the updates they're releasing. But wouldn't it be wiser to stagger these releases? That's what I thought they'd do since they released iTunes 10.5 yesterday. They have to know that dropping 5 or more major updates at once will cause a gigantic cluster-fuck.

Just a little foresight would go a long way.

Hey guys,

If I do "Automatically fill free space with songs" and fill up my iPhone, will it still leave enough space left on my iPhone for OTA Software Updates?

Got past all of the backup shit and now I'm trying to just sync my shit to my phone for the last time and it's taking for fucking ever..

god I hate Itunes.

I completely agree with staggering the updates. But they didn't, and we all know that. I guess that's one of Apple's modus operandi. Making big splashes and releasing everything at once. To be fair, it would have been tough to stagger, because all of these components are required for iCloud to function correctly. iOS5, OSX updates, OSX app updates, iOS app updates, etc.

Does anyone please have a direct link to download this on my UK (GSM?) iPhone 4? Thank you! :( Can't grab it direct from iTunes

If you're up for making a FAQ that has more info than the two current links (not sure where you got six), then go for it Marty.

Sync your device to get what you have currently back on your PC.

There's no reason they couldn't have updated OSX, OSX app updates, and iOS app updates prior to launching iOS5.

grabbed that from: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmbc40255b
under 'setup for iOS'

it won't apparently do a one-time 'all photos must go!' sync, it's new photos only it seems.
it takes a small bit of time to get the new photo sync'd back to your computer (on windows anyways) but it's very quick if you drop a photo into the uploads folder you've set, pushing it out to your iphone/ipad.

Reluctant-Hero said:
God, I hope so. Nothing is worse than watching HBO-GO and having it interrupted by some damn twitter or SMS notification.

Exactly. I always have a stream going when I'm at a desk via my 3G connection and it takes long enough in NYC to buffer up a decent chunk of video. Especially on the CNN app because it completely KILLS the stream.

Not sure, but you can now remove songs from your phone directly. So worst comes to worst you'll just have to make room, LMAO.
