iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

I think I'm just going to go ahead and delete everything, if everything is in your purchased history on the iPhone/iPad then it's just taking up space on my computer. So basically the only reason to have anything on your comp would be for a quicker transfer of the app as opposed to DLing it from apple through wifi.


Also, if I get a new iPhone, are all the apps going to be restored on the iPhone? or do they need to be on my computer do so?

if you get a new iPhone, the apps will redownload. they do not need to be on your computer.

if you backup to iCloud, they will always redownload. if you backup to iTunes, the apps will transfer from the hard drive during a restore.

edit: 12gig cleared, feels good

Nope. Apps removed by ToS violations or dev license expiry are purged. iCloud backups will not matter, you won't be able to redownload any removed app. If you had an app installed that's been purged you'll get a "can't be downloaded at this time" popup during the restore process and the settings from said app will be removed from your backup after that.

ugh, I hate being wrong about this stuff. yeah, you’re right.

I could’ve sworn people were talking about redownloading apps like “handy light” and “iMame” off the iCloud purchased list back when iCloud launched.

but now, nope, they don’t show up. so that is definitely a reason to keep some apps backup up in iTunes.

Yeah it's a shame. I think the misconception stems from people confusing local availability with global availability. For instance, when iMame got removed, it was removed in the US store a few days before it was removed in other app stores elsewhere, thus people who downloaded it outside the US still found it in their purchased list to download after it "was removed".
 
I understand that some apps get pulled like iMame, so it would be a good idea to keep a copy on the computer, but I don't have any apps like that so I should be ok
 
I asked this question a few days ago and got a response but it was a quick post from my phone and not very detailed. I'm terrified of losing all my music, movies and game saves so I just want to ask again in a bit more detail.....

I add music and movies to my iPhone with my work laptop. This is the only computer I have regular access to at the moment and as it belongs to work I can't store all my music on it permanently. Therefore, I can't sync my phone to it on a regular basis so I just choose to manually manage my media

Last week I had a fault on my work laptop and ICT resolved it by setting up a new windows account/profile for me. Following this I can't drag and drop music onto my phone within iTunes any more as it says it's attached to another computer. The phone appears in iTunes but if I try and drop stuff onto it it just ignores me

What can I do to fix this without having to add all my music again? Someone said I need to authorise the computer with my iTunes account first? I've reset my activations so I have 5 available and that won't be a problem. Someone also said about transferring my purchases to the computer? I can do that but I don't see how it will fix this problem and one time I tried it a message popped up to the effect of "this phone is not paired with this computer. Do you want to erase all of your data and pair the phone?" - that put me off trying this whole thing back on Sunday when I originally asked about this

Any help would be appreciated as I have some new songs I'm dying to throw on there

say I've typed an email; how the hell do you attach something once you've already got it going? Seems to be no easy way to do it? I keep forgetting and everything I have had to "select all", then go back to whatever app that has the doc/image and "email it" and paste the email body/text back in.

They should have a button somewhere that says "attach"...

Appreciate the help.

There's no way to do it unfortunately, as far as I know. It's kinda sad tbqh.

I know Sparrow can do this though, I would consider trying it out (however one major downside is that it doesn't have push notifications).
 
How does AirPlay actually work? Say you're watching an online video - I s the video being streamed to your iPhone, then back to your router and down to your apple tv? Or does the iPhone just pass on the URL and the apple tv streams directly?


Wondering because plex has AirPlay support and I'm wondering whether it'd be feasible for me to use an old iPod touch I have as a remote to streak to my apple tv?
 
Is iTunes Match worth getting? I haven't looked into it much at all. Does it really upload everything to the cloud, even obscure gaming soundtracks?

And do I have to keep the music on my computer for it to stay in the cloud? Like if I have MP3s backed up on an external hard drive, could I get those matched then detach it?

Yes it uploads any music you have that it can't match to the iTunes Store. Once it's uploaded it's in the cloud, you can delete & re-download it whenever you like. Otherwise it would be quite pointless :P
 
Does anyone else want a big revamp with 6? Are there any rumours? Does this line of conversation get brought up every other page?

Tempting. I rarely launch up iTunes so I wasn't sure if there was some kind of BS thing going on to get it running

Is there a way for outside US folks to get in on the Match thing? Would it work through a VPN, or would I need a US based iTunes account for things to get going.

So far Google Musicnhas been incredibly disaapointing with the way it handles iOS and won't upload my lossless stuff.

I really hope they totally redefine the experience,and make the iPad much closer to a full on laptop replacement. I'm so ready to go iPad and desktop, but there are still so many shortcomings of iOS that needs to be fixed before that is viable.

But no rumors yet, at least that I know off.

It's not US-only, what country are you in? Wikipedia says it's available in 37 countries.

Ah, damn. Dunno about VPN stuff but I would assume it works based on your account rather than location, since for example I could download an app that's only in the US store if I have a US account.
 
If I wanted to set my wife up with an iPod touch that wouldn't have to connect to a computer to sync, would that need a 4th gen to get iCloud? Or does the 2nd gen support wifi sync?

iTunes match is a great service....when it works properly.

you don’t want a 2nd gen - it’s not compatible with iOS 5.

Get a third or fourth gen. personally, I say 4th gen as complete independence from a computer requires iTunes Match and that is a bit of a burden on the 3rd gen model (speaking from experience)

Anecdotally, it "matched" all the video game soundtracks I had. I don't have many because CD imports are expensive. Chrono Trigger - Brink of Time, Chrono Trigger - OST, Chocobo's Dungeon Wii OST all matched for me. It also matched a number of local bands. But since it uploads whatever it can't match, it's really just about how much time you have to upload the stuff it can't match.

I have maybe 500-600 CDs and it matched about 80% of them and uploaded the rest.

Yes.

Works well and I can get my music on laptop, iPad and iPhone with zero issues. I can also remove songs to save space if I need and re download them whenever.

Ok, it's just that I had a 2nd gen lying around.mif I need to get a 4th gen I'd be tempted to get her an iPhone 4 instead - two birds one stone

I have a 3rd gen 64GB iPod touch I am looking to sell. It's like new as well, I had it replaced by AppleCare right before I got my iPhone, and I never used it. It still has the clear sticker thing on it. I'll sell it at a reasonable price.
 
So, only one apple ID can download past purchases at a time? Trying to change my mac to my wife's account but to download her purchases it's warning me I won't be able to download from my account for 90 days. Seems excessive, surely they have households with more than one apple ID, but iTunes on a computer is stuck with one?

Does iTunes match stream on iOS devices? I read that it didn't before but wanted to know if they changed it

This only applies to the automatic downloads across devices. Only one ID can do that and you can only transfer that feature once every 90 days. This is Apples way of limiting/stopping multiple people from sharing purchases easily. You can still manually sync purchases across as many devices and as much as you like.

This should only be true if you're trying to sign out of/into the iTunes Store on the device itself. Do the downloads on your home computer and sync them over instead.

Nope, I was doing it on my computer. Signed out of my account and into my wifes, then went to the store and purchased items to redownload using the iCloud icons next to the tracks. Then it came up with the warning

Computer is authorised for both accounts. I can buy something new on the second account, just not redownload if it was previously downloaded and isn't on this computer

Why would it kill your interest? iOS with match has a clever way of removing downloaded songs automatically if you are running low on space. Not sure exactly how it works because it's basically undocumented, but i don't see any real disadvantage to pure streaming.

it’s not that big of a deal as iOS will delete songs automatically based on, a I understand it, how long ago they were downloaded and last time played. (you can also manually delete stored versions of albums or playlists)

to test this out, I got a 32 GB iPhone that had around 1 GB free and was filled mostly with music. I hooked it up to iTunes and chose to install the 2 GB “elements for iPhone” app and it automatically made space by removing a few songs. I never got an error message about being out of space or anything like that. it just dumped some songs as if they were in a temporary cache. it didn't dump anything that I had listened to recently, that’s for sure.

so it looks like you can treat the music storage as a temporary chase if you want to install new apps or if you start listening to new albums or watching iTunes movies.
 
Yikes, that pretty much kills it for me too. Music isn't something I need taking up space on my phone, but it is nice to have access to once in a while.

I’m not sure why this is a problem if the OS automatically deletes it when you add something else. the end result is that you don’t need to manage storage - like streaming - but you get a big cache for offline usage.

I feel like I’m missing something.
 
I don't like it because my music listening practices are unusual and sporadic, and I won't know what I want I want to listen to or when until the very second I do. When this happens, I want it to be quick and easy to access. I don't want to have to wait for it to download if iOS just suddenly decided it's getting deleted because I downloaded an app. I want my music to be on demand, when I need it, instantly. Having it physically on my phone just seems like an additional hassle, especially for a service I'm paying $25/year for. The automatic deletion of music is actually a big problem for me.
 
^ I agree with you on that, there should be an option to prevent iOS from deleting songs to make space.

But while it can be improved, it's still an improvement over simply streaming.

But it is instant access. You can listen as you download. All that it does is cache the songs you have downloaded. I can't see how this is worse than streaming.

That said, as with all Apple automation, it's all well and good in theory, until the automatic-ness fails - like it doesn't delete something it should, or it deletes something it shouldn't. But, you know, complain about that when it happens.

Not saying it's a ridiculous desire.

It is what it is. Like with all Apple way of doing anything, you either take it in its current state, or leave it until it gets to where you want it, whether that comes or not is anyone's guess.

From these two posts, the apple solution seems perfect for you. Doesn't sound like you are going to have all your music locally anyway

Ah, so it's a cache. Got it, that makes more sense. I would rather have it stream only but I can see how it helps if you listen to a few tracks repetitively

I don't want to alarm you, but every single application on your phone caches downloaded content and wipes it when necessary for space. If you've ever run out of space and saw an app icon show "Cleaning...", that's what's happening. Keep breathing calmly.
