Yeah, wanting to manage what is or isn't on my phone at any given moment is a ridiculous desire. I see your point now.

ok, here's the argument that I don't understand. Apple gives you quit a bit of management. So I still don't think you understand how it's working (not that is all your fault. Apple hasn't documented the options it gives customers very well for itunes match)

with the pure streaming service, you aren't managing storage and there's a cache that stores some of the most recently listened to songs.

I think I read you can "pin" tracks to always be on the device with google streaming? is that correct? i don;t remember reading about a lot of management options here

anyway, with the apple service, you tap a song and it plays. it gets saved to the storage but it may be deleted automatically if you download a lot of music or apps afterward , as if it were in a cache. if you tap the first song in an album, all the other songs download when they start playing. very simple

but the apple service also gives you the ability to manage the storage more than a streaming service by allowing you to manually download and manually delete individual songs, playlists albums, artists etc on a very granular level. so it's sort of giving you the control that you are asking for. more control than a streaming service.

but, it remains headache free because when you start putting more media and apps on the device and the storage fills up, it will remove songs automatically that you aren't listening to - so you don't need to manage storage to make room for other things. the management is all optional.

Well, since my Evo's screen was completely shattered, I got an iPhone 4 8GB in the interim to hold me over until I get the iPhone 5 this Fall day one. This was actually a great opportunity to see how iTunes Match would work. I was worried by some people who said that it didn't work well on iPhone 4's.

Luckily for me, it works beautifully. Out of my 9,000 song library iTunes matched 3,983 of them and as i type this up song number 4,391 of the remaining songs that couldn't be matched is being uploaded. I thank my FiOS internet speeds for the most part, but doing it all on my desktop PC on iTunes was pretty damn hassle-free itself. On my iPhone, it works great, no lagging in the music app, and even though the match hasn't even finished yet, I couldn't wait and just tried it out. It worked well. Of course, there's a few seconds of a delay when starting a song, but I attribute that to the data speeds (In my room I seem to only be able to get 3 bars of service on Sprint)...on the road I was getting 5 bars so it should be a bit speedier. On my WiFi network things were almost instant. And the fact that you can have your songs cached and individually download songs while queing up others is fucking awesome. Genius.

Looks like I can get a 16GB iPhone 5 instead of a 64GB afterall. And with 4G LTE by then, it'll be great.

Oh, my iPhone fortunately had 5.0.1 (my sister's had 5.1...but she doesn't care about that stuff) so I had an easy time getting a full untethered jailbreak. Lucky.

Random questions about Itunes digital media:

Are all songs DRM-free now? I remember purchasing some a couple years back and I re-downloaded them recently. When I view them in Windows explorer, It doesn't allow me to play them in another media player.

What about movies or other forms of their digital media?

All songs are DRM-free. If you purchased them back when they weren't, you can upgrade them to iTunes Plus (ie. DRM-free) versions in the iTunes Store.

Movies & TV Shows are not DRM-free unfortunately. Books also have DRM.

edit: nevermind. Thanks for the answer. Too bad movies aren't DRM free.

I use and enjoy the iTunes match service, but there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't be able to simply stream your music on an iPhone, at least over wifi. If it's doable on my PC, Mac and on my ATV3 than there is no excuse.

Homesharing? Or are you talking about streaming when away from home?

Ah, so it's a cache. Got it, that makes more sense. I would rather have it stream only but I can see how it helps if you listen to a few tracks repetitively

Yeah, Apple's way is better. Songs you listen to frequently only waste bandwidth the first play. With bandwidth caps it makes total sense.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to discuss jailbreak apps in this thread or not, but has any method been developed that would let me download an mp3 from a blog and integrate it into the iPhone's music library?

people bitch about iTunes match replacing their songs with the clean version but i'm having the exact opposite reaction...I rather like my songs clean I wish there was a way to fix it...

Streaming away from home. Ideally I'd like to be able to stream my music collection without having the actual files on any of my computers or devices, including the iPhone. I'd rather the space on my iPhone be used for apps and games instead of having to allot space for music. I don't have a bandwidth cap of any kind so not really concerned about using too much data anyway.

just copy the mp3 into itunes library and add it to the iphone through itunes

Is there anyway at all to knock the iPad 2's brightness down below the lowest setting on the slider? It is jailbroken if that makes any difference.

Cheers

Is there an app that will post Twitter messages to my lock screen? I mean all of them. Not just direct messages/mentions. The official one doesn't seem to do this.

I don't follow many people but there are some tweets I'd like to keep on top of. I find twitter useless most of the time because I'm missing the majority of the tweets anyways. It would be nice to make it useful for tracking down things like early film screenings and free events in the city.

No one is going to fit the bill it would cost to make such an app a reality. I've heard push servers can get expensive quickly. Why not just check twitter once a day or so if you don't use it often?

Make a specific themed Twitter list with the users you want to see content from and check that regularly instead of your timeline. Less spam that way.

Boxcar can kind of do it.

You tell Boxcar who you want it to follow, and it'll send you a push notification for every tweet they send out. I don't know if there's a limit.

Some of the information I want is timely (advance movie screenings).

I don't have that many twitter users to begin with but I wouldn't mind playing around with lists to organize what type of feed it is. Thanks.

Do anyone here know why iTunes keep creating an iTunes folder locally on my Mac? I had changed the location to my NAS for all music and apps but it keeps changing it to a local folder. :/

can you check what you got listed in the itunes options window for the music library path?

if the path is your NAS, then it should stick all new music in there. if the path is something else, then you want to change it to the NAS.

keep the two options below the path window checked if you want to have itunes copy music files into the folder structure (it seems a lot of people on gaf do not want this so I bring it up if you happen to be one of them)

I already have it like that, but when I go to open iTunes again, it automatically creates an iTunes folder on my Mac Mini. =/ And if I erase that local folder beforehand, then I can't see any of my content in iTunes.

i think iTunes is reading a different iTunes library database file that is expecting music to be on the local drive. this is the *.itl file in your music folder. it knows where the actual music files are stored and keeps track of metadata/ playlists.

do you have more than one of those itl files?

try opening iTunes while pressing the option key and pick one of the other libraries (if you have more than one) or select a new library and choose all the songs on the NAS drive.

Is there anyway to see in iTunes which apps are synced with which device?

There are a few I'm pretty sure I can delete, but that'd be the best way to be sure :s

Click your device(s) in the iTunes sidebar and then click on the Apps tab. Any apps that are synced to that device should have the checkboxes marked.

This is perfect, thank you so much!

Thank you, but this will only work if I have all of my devices connected at once, and even then I'd have to cross reference them all, if that makes sense? That's the sucky part about having thousands of apps and 3 devices :(

Does your NAS mount at startup?

Anyone know of a way to actually delete email messages via the phone in one step when using GMail on Exchange? There isn't a button to turn off archiving when using it that way. I didn't realize this but when using GMail on Exchange it just archives (strips the 'Inbox' label) messages even though it says 'delete', it doesn't actually delete anything and "deleted" messages are still visible in the 'All Mails' area. One can delete mails from there to actually put them in the Trash but that's not convenient.

It's an option at m.google.com/sync

I'll try this out today.

I don't know. I'm actually really new at NAS'.

I have the music app, Pandora and Instacast, only three. I'd feel most people would have more.

I want my phone to be smart enough to remember the last 'app' I played from and I want to be able to select which music app to play from the lock screen. That would make things 100x easier.

Hmm, I'm trying this right now, and there seems to be one locally only. I don't seem to have an .itl file on my NAS.
When I create a new one, I can't see my NAS under devices.

=/

Why do I have duplicate songs from iTunes purchases on my iPhone but not on my Mac?

Is one the iCloud version and the other the downloaded version? How do I get rid of the duplicates?

Been searching on the Internet for a while for a solution to this now. Is there a way to remove duplicates in iTunes without doing them manually one by one.

It's an option at m.google.com/sync

holy crap. I can kiss you on the mouth right now. this setting alone has been my main frustration with Gmail Exchange on my iOS devices for years! thank you!

now I need to find a way to delete old & lost devices on the list.

Guys, not sure if it's been mentioned already but I permanently have a (1) icon on my messages badge, although I have 0 messages unread

Even when I go into messages app, it doesn't say Messages (1), it just says Messages..

I've closed and reopened the app, closed my iMessage on my MBP and no joy. just wondering whats up

Fake message badges on the app icon on mac, in my experience are related to the dock icon being wrong.

Like you get a message it increments but you read it before it updates the icon or a hiccup happens before it changes the icon back.

My remedy is usually to restart the dock.

If I recall, it's something lik go to terminal, and type:
killall Dock

If you meant on your iDevice, try rebooting. Otherwise try turning OFF I message in system preferences and back on again on one or all devices to kickstart it. Or a combination, like turn it off, then reboot and turn it back on. I think it happened for my iPad once.

I meant to say on my iPhone is where the (1) is being displayed
