iOS Gaming April 2017 | Canceled due to backlog

Thanks for the Card Thief recommendation guys, this game is pretty neat. The sound effects and visuals are top notch, but yeah it seems pretty hard right now. I've made it through the first level 3 times and got out with chests.

I'm a little bit confused, do I need to replay this level until I get 15 chests in order to unlock the other places on the map? What is the gold used for that I'm stealing along the way?

Unrelated question: I've heard a lot of really good things about Device6 and Sorcery!, however I tried 80 days on Steam and didn't really care for it. Are they the same type of game?

You need to collect insignias which come in random amounts from the chests you steal. The higher the chest value, the greater the chance for more insignias. There will be plenty of times where you get chests filled with garbage. To open the chests, visit the Guild Master and open them under the Chests section.

The gold is your score for each run, nothing more.

So I found Her Story to be completely underwhelming. This is unfortunate because I felt like the "game", which was otherwise fairly well written and presented, suffered a lot from a real lack of structure. I'm not saying it would have been infinitely better with a bunch of handholding in place, but SOMETHING to give you a bit of guidance and a real sense of getting somewhere with your investigation would have went a long way, for me.

I realize that's probably not the point, but I really didn't like it. Because then it just ends, without a final thought on anything you've been doing with your time.

I feel like the game doesn't respect my time. Like, at all.

Edit: I'll go one step further with my opinion on it, now that I'm giving it more thought and it's irking me:

Her Story is needlessly abstract, hipster bullshit.

And it's painfully obvious she was suffering from split personality disorder.

This is exactly how I felt about it. I really did not enjoy it. I played it with my boyfriend one night and we found the true solution so quickly that we were just aghast at what had happened. We felt no reason to go back and do it again after this. I like the idea of the game, and found it compelling, but it's pretty flawed in its execution. I don't say this simply because I might feel cheated for stumbling across the solution so readily, but, like SolidChamp said, there is no feeling of progression and that's just obnoxious when you're playing a video game. I understand it is to replicate the manners of a true crime investigation, but it just did not jive with me.

I made it to Arena 7 in Clash Royale.

$10 for the special offer is ridiculous (I realize it's a good value relative to their already ridiculous IAP prices). For that money I could pick up Planescape Torment on iPad instead.

But I really want that 33,000 in gold, I only have about 500.

So what are some really good noir-styled detective mysteries for iOS? Could be interactive text adventure or sim or whatever. Outside of the Ace Attorney stuff, of course.

Now that I've gotten a really good feel for just how compelling text adventure games can be on my iPhone, I'm craving a variety of stuff.

These fit the bill:

Kathy Rain

Miss Fisher and the Deathly Maze

Pine Grove

Adventure games straying from noir:

Primordia Bleak Sci-Fi

Tormentum: Dark Sorrow Geiger-esque Dark Fantasy

Dropsy the Clown

Noir branching out:

Maybe try Fallen London?

Is Sunless Sea a noirish game? It kind of has that vibe in the screenshots. It just came out on iOS.

Elder Sign: Omens is an adaptation of the well-regarded co-op adventure board game. You can play it by yourself and it has a Lovecraft-Noir atmosphere.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective Classic game I'm sure you are aware of.

I don't know that it's really what you're looking for gameplay-wise but Framed is a great game, regardless.

If by noir detective story you mean something like the movie Casablanca, I loved Calvino Noir.

Just completed Lara Croft GO last DLC.
Little great expansion.

Hands down the best GO.

As a little reminder, Hitman, Lara Croft and Deus Ex GO are all 100% free on Amazon Underground if you have an Android device.

Some other gems in there, too, like Star Wars KOTOR, Monument Valley, Sorcery! 1 & 2, Badland. Knights of Pen & Paper +1 and Season 1 of The Pinball Arcade.

HotHamBoy I'm soooooo hating you right now. :p
In your recent recap you mentioned all titles I played (and still play) to death....but I've noticed one wasn't on my devices anymore....and I somehow forgot why....so I re downloaded it.

Dead Man Draw.

Now I remember, it's digital crack.
I wish it had async multiplayer (and no traits...I don't like them but I can play without them).

It's truly a hidden gem!

I'm glad someone else realizes how good it is. Not having async sucks but I've yet to find a better same-screen local-MP pick-up game on mobile. It's just really breezy and intense.

Speaking of digital crack, why can't I stop playing Dandy Dungeon??

Just did too! The only minor problem here was the framerate, which really tanked in most levels. Seems like it needs another pass of optimisation and polish.

Rally? I didn't notice it tbh, but I mostly played on a 6S.
Great game...I wish there was more of it already.

Thats not a good offer. Arena 8 gives 100k gold and 1,200 gems plus a magical. Take that offer instead when you arrive.

I am bordering arena 10 and cant wait to buy the offer (legendary chest, 1,200 gems and 100k gold)

This sounds like exactly what I'm looking for! A CCG but single-player, without collecting. I'll check it out, thanks!

Let me know if you like it.
I'm at the end of the third campaign, where multiple Planeswalkers are introduced, and I'm immensely loving it.

Bonus if you like it, next week another expansion campaign will be added, Amunkhet, just realeased for the real life card game.

Is that one $10 too?

I just know it's gonna be slow going to get to Arena 8, I'm pretty sure I'm going to drop back to Arena 6 with my current W/L ratio.

I just want gold, god damn it! But yeah, not buying the current offer.

So, I have $9 iTunes Credit.

Should I buy Planescape (never played it or any classic PC WRPG but I feel like I'm supposed to play this at some point), Sunless Sea, Death Road To Canada, Desktop Dungeons or Ember?

Death Road To Canada looks really fun but I really don't like touchscreen virtual controls and action buttons. They just added MFI suupirt but I don't have a controller.

Also considering just holding out for Stern Pinball Arcade's upcoming release of the new Ghostbusters table.

Depends on what you like.
Ember is real time cRPG designed with mobile in mind,
Desktop Dungeons is an roguelike with a more puzzle game feel, a bit of numbers game in how you movie around the map and when you attack.
Death Road is also roguelike lite, with a hybrid of on-foot fighting against massive hordes and the traveling/management side with random events and stats
Sunless Sea is inspired by Planescape, so if you like weird worlds and a lot of well-written text to read, combined with RPG and roguelike elements
Planescape is very much talking and text focused, with a lot of reading and a lot less combat than your usual cRPG

Clash Royale is bullshit.

I just reached Crown Level 8, I'm about to be knocked out of Arena 7. I keep getting matched with Crown LV 9 players. All their troops are higher levels. What's more obnoxious is how many have 1, sometimes 2 Legendaries in their deck and I still have zero.

I just went up against a guy with a Princess and Electro Wizard AND a Bandit who was using Mirror. Granted, that was in today's Tournament but come on. And fuck that Executioner.

I've been in Arena 7 for several days and the only new cards I've gotten are Elite Barbarians. I haven't even gotten any of the other Common, Royal Giant, let alone an Arena 7 Rare or Epic.

Shit sucks.

The problem is that I like all of those things a lot.

I think it's between Planescape and Sunless Sea but I can't decide.

Thats mostly because there is the clan chest going on and players without any skill drop several arenas to farm crowns easier. There is a norm: if your opponent has overleveled cards it means you are a better player. When the clan chest is over it will be back to normal.

The deck you posted in the Clash Royale thread wasn't great. You should swap balloon for Inferno Tower or Cannon, and consider swapping out Minion Horde for Minions.

As for the problem with Executioner, every deck has a weakness or a counter. Executioner is going to be problematic for the deck you have with large numbers of low health troops. The key to defeating Executioner is placement. Make sure you drop your Valkyrie or Musketeer in a place that draws the axe away from your other troops or tower.

And if you are constantly being matched against higher level players with better cards, that means you are punching above your weight.

Thanks guys, good to know. Makes me feel better!

I'll tinker with the setup.

I have rediscovered what I don't like about ascension. The single player is super lame and easy.

I like the deck building aspect, I like not having to be connected to the internet, but there's just like no challenge with the AI.

Really excited for Full Throttle Remastered on iOS when it releases. Will be the third version I get after reviewing on PC and buying on PSN for PS4/PSV.

Star Realms has some good AI and an actual campaign.

I think Warbits might be in sale for 1 buck soon. It dropped over night but raised quickly again.

In other regards, I finally picked up Solutairica during the sale. My card game collection is coming up very nicely!

Solitairica is so fucking good.

Warbits is good too, it's a great Advance Wars clone!

HeroCraft's new game, Tempest: Pirate Action RPG, is out for $7.99 and looks impressive. On the fence though since I've been spending a lot lately.

Looks like a modern take on Sid Meier's Pirates! with naval combat closer to Black Flag's.

Gameplay video:

Edit:

Looks like this game isn't "new" at all. Rather it's a port of a 2015 PC game that currently has a 60 on Metacritic:

Thought you had abondoned us over here. Good to see you!

Haha! Haven't gotten rid of me yet! :p

Been going nuts over Card Thief, Kingdom New Lands, Ticket to Earth, and Beglitched. Such amazing games!

Love Full of Stars too... but the gameplay is so unimaginative. AMAZING concept though. Also just recently realized it's made by the makers of Puzzle Craft

Just oh so eagerly waiting for the release of the new Foursaken Media game now!

In celebration of the a big content update und the first anniversary, Warbits is on sale for 99 cents but will go up to a higher than original price afterwards (4.99 instead 3.99). Whoever was on the fence with this one, now is the time to pick it up!

This month was the little residual wave that follows a tidal wave. Everyone's either got their hands full with last month's games, Switch, or letting their backlog subside

Been playing a lot more PS4/PC this month myself

Hopefully just an iap for full unlock. Hopefully no micro transactions.....

If it's an unlock, I'd be happy with that. I know this is well reviewed but I'm still not a big fan of build/management sims so at least this would give me a chance to see if I'd even like it.

It's an unlock. 14.99 and you get the first campaign for free plus sandbox (limited to the first seven days)
