iOS Gaming January 2016 | Should old applications be forgot?

I'm trying really hard to find a game to treat myself right now but is coming up short. How's Collidatron?
Haven't played that one, but honestly if you want a fast-paced circular evasion-heavy arcadey game, go with Circa Infinity. It's my favorite game this week, and I really wish I hadn't ignored it on PC.

Nah, it looks confusing, and wasn't it said to be more of a platformer earlier in this thread?

I'm really considering Captain Cowboy, Wayward Souls or Crashlands though.

Awesome. Mind if I ask how single player is?
It's great, 9 missions in so far and haven't lost yet but they are definitely getting progressively harder. Love how envy mission has introduced a new unit and the landscape is slowly getting more complicated.

I never played any of the Advanced Wars games so I can't really comment on the similarities but from the videos I've seen Warbits does seem take after it. And honestly that's fine by me cause I just found a genre that I never knew I liked! :)

Hmmmm.
Just read that Darkest Dungeon iOS port is 'Not in our current plans but we do like the idea of DD on touch devices' state.
I hoped/was under the impression the effort was a bit higher on their todo list.
PS4/Vita port is scheduled for Spring.

I asked them about iOS a month or two ago, and got the response of "no plans for iOS" which was quite disappointing, and seems a bit daft. Would be very well suited to an iPad, and is the main reason I haven't played it too much.... would rather on the couch then in front of the mac I've been coding on all day already.

The graphics looks great but the night time tracks lower the visibility too much.

I struggled a bit on the night time tracks... figured it was just because I'm old :(

What's with all those devs fucking up the controller support?
Just tried some games and the support was horrible.

First I tried that Gameloft Sniper game and the shoot button was already misplaced. The game looked like some Gameloft F2P crap anyway so I didn't even continue much further. Then I tried Dead Effect 2, which had a lot of weird mapping choices for the controller. On the plus side, the options allowed for a lot of customization, something I wish every game would have. Unfortunately the game was boring and it wanted me to sign in to continue playing.

Also tried some Epoch 2 and didn't know it was some shitty swipe game.

You don't have Crashlands yet! Get it!!!!

...and Wayward Souls is great too. Haven't played Captain Cowboy.

Well, I jumped in for three more games Circa Infinity, Twofold and Lost Journey. All are excellent.

Since there's been posts about the first two, you already have an idea of what those are about.

So Lost Journey is a perspective shift puzzle platformer. The levels flip/invert and you have to figure out how to navigate to all of the shards on each level using that mechanic. It's clever and while not hard it's also not easy (for me at least -- I might be a little slow in getting used to figuring out where I'll be with each flip). Artwork reminds me of Lost Winds. And a steal at $.99.

Ahaha, obviously I understand but it's a very one sided pun since it only has to do with one game relevant to discussion, but even that game came out in January not February.
There have been a few thread titles that reference the recent popular game (Lara Croft GO, Threes, etc.), so there's precedent :p

Does Circa Infinity have controller support? I would assume so, but I didn't see a mention of it on the App Store description.

So to those of you who have had an Apple TV for a while now, where are you at with the purchase? Improved media functionality aside, is it something you're using as a gaming device?

Twofold Inc. is legit, swiping those tiles is a great puzzling mechanic and the music and art just bring it home. Only the introduction could be better as you can easily miss the tutorial text when you try to play.

My thoughts on the device are complicated. I don't game in it much, and when I do the Siri remote is basically unusable for all but single button games. Most of the more complex games don't run in native resolution, some are less than 720p, and a lot of the games are still unsure how to handle the TV/remote input. The device still seems have stability issues, every time I come home from work when my girlfriend has been home all day she complains about a new bug or crash that stopped her from using Netflix. The remote is poorly designed, I still fumble with it and have to guess what swipe will go where.

I just wish it was better. It has some things that I does well. The general interface for films and the UI is as good as it gets. Browsing films on the TV has never been better. HDMI CEC makes the device kinda take over your TV and it feels really slick, love that feature. But I can't recommend it now. Maybe tvOS 10 or Apple TV 5.

EDIT: More positive stories though.

I had a party and eventually a group started playing Crossy Road, passing around the remote. That was fantastic and a lot of fun. Nobody felt like touching the PS4, but they wanted to goof around with the bite sized Apple TV games. It actually got a few of my gamer friends interested in playing games on their phones.

I also played some Geometry Wars 3 and Transistor on the Apple TV. GW3 looks and runs amazing; it's my go-to game on the device. Transistor doesn't look as good as the PS4 version, it's lower resolution and uses 2D assets instead of 3D, but it's a playable, meaty game. Both games really need the Steelseries Nimbus controller, which is fantastic but expensive.

I haven't looked at the App Store recently because I rarely turn on my TV unless I'm intending to watch or play something. It's possible I'm missing out.

Yeah, it's a great game, but some of the tutorial is borderline nonsensical to a point.

For instance, they hoist these bonus tiles on the bottom of the screen and while I've used them with no issue' I still don't understand or know the mechanics of how I accrue them or what the dots above them mean.

Otherwise, it's pretty dang great.

I do use it as a gaming device, but I don't have any other consoles and play on iOS anyway. It's nice to have universal games that sync with icloud; i can play on iPad on the train to work and pick it up on the Apple TV at home.

The game situation has picked up since release, there's a handful of games out every week. I think for gaming it's a nice bonus if you have bought stuff on ios.

Also, the Siri remote sucks for games, pick up a decent MFi controller. There's a good range now and they're much more affordable. Hopefully Apple drops the requirement for the Siri remote for games this year.

That is actually amazing... Thinking about picking it up, since it reviewes that phenomenal scores. But I have no internet access home right now so downloads should be small and offline playable.

Another question: is there any way to save the license of a currently free game, though you have no space for the game in the phone and no internet at home to get it via iTunes? Speaking about star horizon here...

Twofold is just great. It has that level of polish and simplicity that I look for in puzzle games. The recipe mechanic makes it feel like progress in each run, and each of the additional mechanics (rotating, square substitution) give you just enough options to feel like you could have saved a run.

I should have know I would love it. Rymdkapsel was great, but this is even better.

Rotating? I feel like I missed something

Damn, didn't know you could use those blocks. Thanks, you just changed up my whole game, lol.

I guess he means moving the tiles on the board.

Have to say I still prefer rymdkapsel. The idea felt more novel than what we got with twofold inc.

Pretty sure that the extra tiles on the bottom are filled up when you clear a chain that has a higher value than the amount needed for the recipe

Yes, but I never knew you could us them to replace other tiles, which definitely changes things a lot. Seems like you have to use as many as are there though. If you drag when there are three, you have to use all three I think.

Still have to sing praises for Lost in Harmony. No, it's not perfect. There could be better transitions between the music tapping sections and the more runner obstacle based sections, but I still adore this game. The music alone is worth it. Add in some gorgeous artwork and a heart tugging story and it's a fantastic experience, even with its flaws.

I think Shaun Musgrave's review of it was pretty spot on, although I still find the gameplay itself to be quite enjoyable and have only had a few stages that gave me a bit of trouble. Really, it's not overly difficult to pass stages. But would be incredibly difficult to get perfect scores.

And I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that I'll be playing them over and over because I enjoy them and the soundtrack.

Thanks for the extended impressions. Sort of inline with what I'm hearing from coworkers; potential is there but not really being realized yet and Apple is getting in the way of itself.

not very gaming though?

Thanks, maybe so. FWIW I thought the Her Story one was better.
