My favorite iPhone 4S photo so far, which I took on Wednesday at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The Tower of Terror is my favorite ride, and the lobby is one of the most amazing things Disney's ever created.

Photo taken with Camera+ with the "Auto" filter.

Great snap! Reminds me of the entrance to the Harry Potter ride at Universal.

Siri doesn't like people outside the US that much. A large number of requests spit back "I can only search US directories or businesses and only in US English".

Knowing it analyses the text over the wire makes it less impressive, too. Just a slightly more complicated version of Shazam, I guess.

I've heard rumours it will link into Sensis (Telstra white/yellow pages etc) databases starting from early next year, so we should see a huge boost in local content then.

Do hope so. It's a bit ridiculous that asking a question like "Where am I?" spits back that response. In the very least, it should be able to work out where you are via the GPS co-ordinates.

I had this same problem.

Go into Settings -> Mail, Contact, Calendars -> Gmail account -> Mail Folder to Push and make sure that only the Inbox is set up. For some reason I had all of my folders set to push when I first set it up, so I was getting a push message for the Inbox and then the All Mail box, as well.

Thanks, this was the problem.

Just wanted to mention that I took in my front screen cracked 4S to the Apple store today and it was replaced with a new unit for free. Amazing service, I was fully expecting to pay.

Whoa, when/how did that happen?

First day with the 4s in an office environment. Siri is wholly unusable here. Like blowing into a DS on the subway.

network problems or noisy mic issues?

if it's mic stuff, does it get better if you hold it up to your head like you're talking on the phone?

Surprising. My office is silent, but Siri works fine for me in my car with the radio and fan on, so I figured that would bode well for use in a noisy environment.

Damn, do you work on an assembly line? Siri worked well enough for me on the sidewalk of a busy city street.

Edit: Ohhh, misunderstood. Well, yeah, haha.

Generally I work from home but I also share office space at a couple different locations (so I don't really have co-workers that I am friendly with per-say). I am pretty sure they would think I'm an even bigger asshole than they already do if I start telling my phone to do stuff.

I see this as being a very real issue for a large number of people.

That said, I am way more impressed with Siri than I thought I would be (hence my desire to actually use it day-to-day). The functionality with the headphones is awesome.

It worked while I was mowing the damn lawn yesterday (I have a fairly loud John Deere) so noise doesn't seem to much of an issue.

I still can't seem to figure out how to disable Google Voice for my voicemail. I used it on my Droid, but I want to bail on it completely for the iPhone and just use the regular voicemail. I just want to nuke my fucking Google Voice account from orbit. Seriously, I can't delete the forwarding phone or anything. Can someone who has dealt with this help me out?

edit: So i think I might have fixed it? Google Voice doesn't pick up but now Ive got another set of problems. When I hit the voicemail button on my phone it wants me to enter the 'mailbox number or press # to access my mailbox'. So I press #. It wants a mailbox number. I enter my 10 digit phone number. It says enter a valid mailbox number. I JUST WANT VOICEMAIL TO WORK!!!

6 days after launch. I handed it to a friend so she could look at my photos and she managed to drop it about 3ft onto concrete.

Ouch! Glad it all worked out for you in the end.

Yeah man, I couldn't be happier.
That person would not be my friend right about now. Lucky it worked out for you.

Finally was able to pick up my Verizon phone and leave AT&T behind. It's like a whole different world, to be honest. Reception in my apartment, imagine that!

Yikes. I'm glad the story had a happy ending. Did Apple staff mention AppleCare+ to you while offering to replace the phone for free?

Congrats! You've taken your first step into a larger network.

The pic is a bit noisy, but a black and white cat is ridiculously hard to take a decent picture of. I thought this was pretty decent out of all my efforts. The detail is nice.

So, let's say I want to be able to dictate into a text document (that I can then access at home), rather than an email, status update, or whatever. Is there some app or combination that'll let me do that? Dragon Dictation?

Anyone else getting random SIM Failure messages? This is the fourth time it's happened to me since I opened it (Friday afternoon). Very annoying.

i have to say the iphone 4s has a much MUCH MUCH better reception then my 3Gs, and internet is faster by a lot when measured at the same spot.

4S definitely gets more bars than my 4 in my apartment and in the bathroom stalls at work. ahem...

Yeah, VZW is the greatest, you're going to love their service (especially after using shitty AT&T). I get reception on top of mountains in Colorado when I go skiing while my friends with Sprint and AT&T don't get any. I get service in Bumfuck, Nowhere USA and even miles out on the ocean deep sea fishing. It's great.

Fake edit: Oh, and haven't had a dropped call in years!

Siri please take a note, and what you say goes in to te note app.

Damn, this phone is still hard to get. I ordered one through AT&T and it's backordered and it will take almost a month to ship. Tried the reserve at an Apple store and none of the stores around me have it.

Yeah, but I mean if I want to do something longer than a brief snippet.
I haven't tried it myself, but I'd imagine maybe Pages would work? It has iCloud support, is Apple made etc. but pricey.

I have Pages but not my 4S yet to try. :P

No idea if Siri can interact with non-"core" apps in any way tho.

Anytime the keyboard comes up, except when you're typing in a password, you can press the microphone button to enable text to speech.

You know they didn't actually. Now that you mention it though, that's a perfect time for the sell. Weird.

Just got my 4s today, waiting for my micro sim to be activated which is a bummer! I messed about with Siri for a bit though and I think I can actually get some mileage out of this, which surprised me, little tasks like reminders and setting alarms really work great and will be much more of an asset than I expected.

Dunno if I can bring myself to talk to it in public though lol

If you don't live in the US, there's no AppleCare+, so that could be one reason. I have no idea where you live :p

Whats this Nike + iPod section in settings? Do i need any other equipment to use it or do i just turn it on and bring my iphone along on a jog and it will record my progress and sync it to the website? There is a nike+ app in the store for $1.99 as well but im confused by all this. Do I need that orange shoe sensor too?

If you buy the app, you don't need the shoe sensor as it runs on GPS. If you use the in-phone app, you need the orange sensor as they sync to one another. The GPS app on the app store is better, it gives you a map of where you ran. It's also cheaper by about $15.

Ah! I'll have to try this and see how it works out.

Man, I'd love this, since the shoe sensor is kind of a pain. Not keen on taking my fancy schmancy phone out on runs, though. Do you use one of those arm holster things?

I still have a 3GS, and I just throw it in my back pocket and zip it up. When I get a 4s I'm not sure what I'll do, but it doesn't seem to get hurt in the pocket anyway.

Awesome so just ignore the built in settings nike + thing and get the app from the store is what you'd recommend? Sounds better than getting the orange sensor which i hear the batteries are non replaceable and dont last too long. This way all i need is my phone on me.

I really dont like the idea of bringing my 4S on a run at 5 am in the morning though. Wouldnt know how to secure it. Would have to look into a band of some sorts.

YMMV, but I've had mine for years and thousands of miles and it's still going fine.

My only complaint is having to use a little pouch thing to attach it to my shoes.

I use the app every day (ahem... ~ish), and it's fantastic. The route you took on your map is color coded to show where you sped up, slowed down etc, and you can log in on the Nike+ site to review your runs. There's FB integration (it posts when you start running, and if anyone likes it, you get a little cheer over your music). You can join your city's group and your miles will count toward an ongoing inter-city competition. You can play "tag" with your friends and whoever ran the shortest distance or last in the day, etc (however you want to do it) is "it" for the day. You can have it pipe in over your music to give you half mile intervals. It also tells you when you've broken your record on time, distance, whatever. You can use any, none, or all of the above functionality and more. it's really nice.

Good to know, Cyan. Ill still stick with just my iphone and the app. Doesnt make sense to get the orange sensor if it will cost me more moneh and be one extra piece of equipment i need.

Only thing i need to know before i buy a armband or iphone holder is if the jogging motion and jumping up and down affects the iphone negatively in any way? Any moving parts inside? Hard drive or anything i should be worried about?

Edit: ^^ holy crap duane that sounds awesome!! Buying app now :) hope to test it out soon.

How good is the GPS though? Obviously it depends on where you are (?), but I'd worry about accuracy since sometimes the map shows me in a pretty large circle, sometimes several blocks from where I actually am. Is it "smart" - i.e. does it sort of figure out a path if it drops signal temporarily?

I already have the little sensor and pouch for my shoe, which works OK once you've calibrated it. But it would be nice to have a map...

Ah, you're dead on then since I'm in the UK. Wonder if they plan on offering it here at some point.
