Cross-posting from the iOS5 thread since I didn't have much luck there:

I asked this question a few days ago and got a response but it was a quick post from my phone and not very detailed. I'm terrified of losing all my music, movies and game saves so I just want to ask again in a bit more detail.....

I add music and movies to my iPhone with my work laptop. This is the only computer I have regular access to at the moment and as it belongs to work I can't store all my music on it permanently. Therefore, I can't sync my phone to it on a regular basis so I just choose to manually manage my media

Last week I had a fault on my work laptop and ICT resolved it by setting up a new windows account/profile for me. Following this I can't drag and drop music onto my phone within iTunes any more as it says it's attached to another computer. The phone appears in iTunes but if I try and drop stuff onto it it just ignores me

What can I do to fix this without having to add all my music again? Someone said I need to authorise the computer with my iTunes account first? I've reset my activations so I have 5 available and that won't be a problem. Someone also said about transferring my purchases to the computer? I can do that but I don't see how it will fix this problem and one time I tried it a message popped up to the effect of "this phone is not paired with this computer. Do you want to erase all of your data and pair the phone?" - that put me off trying this whole thing back on Sunday when I originally asked about this

Any help would be appreciated as I have some new songs I'm dying to throw on there

Do you still have your original iTunes folder from before the wipe?

If not, you will have to set up your new copy of iTunes to manage your iPhone, which is basically a click away if I am not mistaken… but you will lose everything on your phone.

Did they actually wipe and reload or just create another account? You may still have access to the music folder of the old account through the C: drive.

Was all the music through iTunes? It will save your purchase history, but not stuff you imported yourself (unless you had iTunes match).

Ooooo, I may be in luck then! This is a shot showing all the profiles in windows explorer:

*Snip*

The "LeeHughes" folder is the one I'm currently using and the "LeeHughes00312" folder is the old profile. If I copy the "iTunes" folder from My Music across from the old profile to the new profile, is there a chance that this could fix everything?

a 99% chance actually.

So far, I'm loving this thing. HUUUUGE improvement over my old Galaxy S.

Yeah - I upgraded from a Droid X to a 32GB 4S last week and am MORE than happy with it. The X just seemed to deteriorate over time. It would get stuck in landscape/portrait view when rotating, the GPS would take 10 to 15 minutes to locate my position and it had a myriad of other minor bugs and issues that just got me fed up with it.

After having an iPad for the past couple of months, I knew I had to dump Android for good. Also, the battery life on this thing is godly.

What's the build quality on the iPhone compared to the iPod Touch? I tossed my 32gb iPod into my backpack while I was in school and apparently the drop into my bag made the iPod dent in the corner. Now the front plate (where the screen is) is popping out. It hasn't broken yet but it's probably going to happen soon at this rate considering I run with it everyday. It's only two months old and I'm kind of pissed.

I was going to pick up an iPhone for my next upgrade (my current provider only has Blackberries and iPhones) but I'm worried if it'll break just as soon. The phone's gonna have to last me 3 years (unless I buy an unlocked iPhone later on to toss onto the iPhone plan I'll be getting).

Another question: Is 1gb a month enough?

Been using a 32gb 4s this week as my daily driver, came from a Galaxy Nexus.

I've been using my phone less for two specific reasons. 1) No notification light means I don't have an OCD complex about looking at my phone, and 2) the screen is so small that doing much of anything is wildly uncomfortable/inconvenient.

However, the hardware is so much better than the gnex that I'll probably stick around for a while.

Question about people who have gotten exchanges for their iPhones. Do they just give you the phone, or the box and accessories as well? And how is this gonna work if I'm on Verizon? I know if it were GSM I could just pop in my sim card but since its CDMA what would I have to do?

I got a replacement iPhone and they just gave me the phone, so I think that's how it works. And they take care of the transferring for you.

They give you a refurb phone (Apple returns are like brand new phones). Apple will do everything for you except for transferring data. But they can activate phones at retail.

What's a normal recharge time from 0% to 100% plugged into the wall?

Mines has gotten to 70% after an hour so far.

I'm worried I may have messed the battery up after leaving it connected to the wall a lot.

Usually an hour or so to 80% and then it trickle charges to (or close enough to) 100% in another hour.

K, thanks.

I'm at 80% now, so I'll see if it trickles to 100% in another hour.

Edit:

Alright:
0 to 80%: 1 hour
80% to 98%: 30 minutes
98% to 100%: 18 minutes

0 to 80% could have been an extra 10.

iOS cycle charges between 90-100% repeatedly as to not overcharge the battery when left plugged in for long durations. It takes about 80 minutes for a full charge but then it discharges and re-charges in cycles. Not sure if it's the case on iPhones as well as iPads but on the latter Apple intentionally made the battery % not fluctuate as much when +95% as to not constantly go up/down and worry consumers that theirs was faulty when it was infact normal behaviour. Just keep that in mind. :)

Anyone encounter an issue with metadata not being updated on your phone for music? Like I corrected a spelling mistake (iTunes uses a $ for one of the artists and I changed it to a standard S) but this change isn't reflected on my iPhone, I'm not using iTunes Match or anything. I've deleted the two songs off my iPhone and put them back on but the old metadata still remains. Very annoying.

Did you change Album Artist? Could be that showing since its set to group by those by default.

I don,t know about that, but recently, i'v even having an issue where my iPhone won't properly sync, which I assume to be a library file not syncing or something. Like, I delete certain podcasts and load new ones in iTunes, then sync myiphone. The files transfer and delete correctly, but when I open the iPod app on myiphone, the list is the older one with the deleted ones still there. If I select them, it can't find the file and just bounces back. It take a couple syncs to get it right.

As a google-heavy user, should I avoid the iPhone? I've noticed that Gmail notifications don't work, and there doesn't seem to be a free Talk replacement (with notifications).

I'm pretty much only on Android still because I use the fuck out of Gmail and Talk all day long.

Android might be a better choice. I find that exchange accounts sometimes won't update the changes that I make using my iphone. For example, let's say that I have a contact named tom, when try to update the tom contact with by adding another home phone, sometimes exchange won't update my cloud data. One day when I purge my phone data, the home phone for Tom will not exist.

When I charge I just charge until I see its 100% does these hours and minute counting show the health of the battery?

I usually charge the phone during the night when I am sleeping...leaving it during the entire 8 hours of sleep I get...

are there noticable differences between the 4S and the 4, other than Siri? Considering getting one for my wife and I'm thinking she'd be fine with a used 4

Damnit. I have a yellow screen.

I also dropped it and it got a little dent. Hopefully they won't notice when I want to return it, hehe.

1- How much is the used 4?

2- What is her current plan?

I think there is worth in a sub 300$ iPhone 4 with a small plan. But if she has a data plan, I would maybe advise to invest in a 4S.

I will generalise, forgive me if this isn't true. Women generally want quick internet access and a great camera. The 4 camera is plenty surfficient, but if she wants to keep this phone for at least 2 years, just take a 4S on a contract. (if she has the data plan)

Keep in mind the Next iPhone will probably be out within the next 6 months.

How well do you think the 4S is going to sell on the secondary market just prior to the supposed new iPhone release?

I'm getting a bit worried that Apple having their supply and demand in order these days and there seems to be an increasing number of ways to get unlocked phones...I'm thinking the 4S isn't going to net me my usual amount this time around.

Always worth it to me to upgrade every year, but it feels like I'll need to pony up more money this year due to not being able to sell my 4S for as much as I want.

Also jumping to Verizon this year under the assumption that the next phone is LTE...and selling THAT phone is going to be even worse due to Verizon. It'll just make sense since my wife is on Verizon (as is everyone I know that isn't on an iPhone) and their shared family data plans will be amazing for me.

So I've just bought a new iPhone 4S and I can't get Siri to work. Everything I try just results in "I'm sorry, I can't do that at the moment". UK version btw

The listed price for a used iPhone 4S 16GB is currently ~$450. Assuming an initial value of $650 that means it's dropped to 70% of its initial value after about 6 months. That's a much faster drop than previous years going by that controversial chart:

That $650 quote would only apply to unlocked phones though, wouldn't it?

If you got your phone on contract, you technically only paid $200. A one day old locked 4S definitely wouldn't fetch something near its MSRP because it's locked. Only unlocked buyers are really paying the $650 retail at launch.
