iPhone 4S |OT|

So it looks like Sprint isn't offering insurance on the iPhone 4, so I doubt that they will offer it for the iPhone 4S. Anyone know a good 3rd party company that will insure my phone?

AT&T didn't either when I signed up for my 3GS. I believe it's common practice. When I get the 4S, I'll be dropping an extra hundred on an apple care plan (just because I've done stupid damage to my 3GS over two years). I was also told by the rep at AT&T when I signed up years ago that you can have it tied into your homeowners/renters insurance. I'm not sure about that, though, because I never actually looked into it.

How satisfied are you with Sprint? I think I'm going to leave AT&T in two weeks.

Applecare?

This is the spiel from their site:

Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and 90 days of telephone technical support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your hardware repair and telephone technical support coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone1 and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage from handling coverage,2 each subject to a $49 service fee.

If you are upgrading and already have our Total Equipment Protection service add-on, we'll remove it when you activate your phone. AppleCare+ is not available for customers in Guam, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.

$99.00

^ Sprint wins again. That is a huge savings over time, even more so with a family plan. Not sure why they picked only 2GB of data though. Highly manipulative. The VZW and ATT numbers should really be higher.

Looks like I'm eligible for an upgrade from my Droid X somehow, so I might be joining you guys. Mind trying to persuade me? I tried looking at the gaming |OT| for the Apple App Store, but was surprised to see their wasn't a recommended list in the OP.

Only thing that sucks is that my main desktop is a PC and my mac, a Mac Mini 2011, is used as an HTPC. I figure using the iPhone on the mac would be better because iTunes doesn't fail as hard as it does on the PC.

What happens when you try and administer iTunes with two idevices?

Just ask for some recommendations as a first time iPhone owner and you will get lots of great suggestions. Also:

Chances are you could get a monthly discount with sprint. I think we got either 15 or 20% off

How so?

Also I always wondered what was up with the 10 dollar extra "Premium data charge" when you've already picked a 69.99 a month everything data plan?

if you can't decide. choose one based on how good it will look with your phone case's colour (if you're getting a case).

Currently got a black iPhone 4 with black bumper (free case from Apple), think I'm going to go causeless this time.

Seriously considering getting the 4S. It would be my first cell phone. Two questions..

1. I've decided I'm going with Sprint for that $79.99 plan. A friend just told me that that plan ends on Oct. 30, 2011 and I see the same thing on their site. Can anyone confirm?

2. How long does it usually take for the second batch of new Iphones to show up? Don't have the money ready to buy on day 1 and I wanna save myself a headache of having to search everywhere for a phone.

Wait, was that a typo?

Is it really $10 a month for UNLIMITED DATA on Sprint for the iPhone?

Their smartphone plan ($69.99+$10 "premium data") covers any smartphone.
Previously the $69.99 plan had unlimited data/text built in.

Basically you got unlimited texts for free, when compared to other carriers. They recently added the $10 extra when the EVO 4G came out.

Just called Verizon. They told me I have to pre-order the new phone and sign up for an account online all at once. This could prove difficult, especially since my goal is to port over an old number. The guy on the other line was funny. He was like "Pshhh, 4S? Why would you want one of those? We have a refurbished iPhone 4 for $100 less!". He wouldn't let it go. I had to hang up!

What does 30$ for Mobile Hotspot mean on Sprint?

And how do the speeds with Sprint compare to At&t?
If you want to share the data from your Sprint phone with other devices you have to pay an additional $30 a month, and that shared data is capped at 5GB if I'm not mistaken.

Speedwise the networks are AT&T > Verizon = Sprint as far as the iPhone is concerned.

Do iOS applications allow trials similar to how Microsoft does trials for the Xbox and WP7 or do developers have to create separate applications for finals and trials?

Someone's tested the speed for Spring with the iPhone already? Or are you just saying the general speed of the networks?

Something not said enough here.

Sprint allows free Google Voice integration with your cell number without porting hurdles and headaches.

Some developers offer lite, free, demo, trials that are separate. Most have an option to buy the full app which will bring you to the App Store for purchase.

I am sorry if this question has been posted but does the iPhone 4S case exactly the same as iPhone 4 case?
The white looks amazing, I'm going that way for sure. Think I've decided on the red Sena Corsa case (with a white offset stripe) to complement it.

Thanks for the answer.

I'm still debating what my next phone will be, so I'm weighing in on my options. I still have not committed to a major platform for my smartphone use.

I'm going to get the white 32GB or 64 GB most likely. I might get one of those bamboo cases.

I once saw a girl when I was doing my laundry drop her phone not even very far and the screen shattered completely, so I'm a little worried whether I need more protection or not.

Fails to mention Sprint gives you better hours for nights and weekends and all mobile phone calls, no matter the network/carrier, aren't counted against your minutes (essentially only land line calls go against your minutes). I've got a 450 minute plan and have yet to even burn through half of that allotment. Also it's pretty easy to get a 25% monthly discount with Sprint from what I hear. I get it through my company, but apparently all you have to do is tell Spring what discount you want to claim and they don't do any research into whether or not you're actually with said company/entitled to the discount. I don't think I had to submit any proof myself now that I think about it.

Just referring to the thereoretical speeds.

HSDPA from AT&T vs. EVOD Rev-A from Verizon/Sprint

You know the whole Sprint is cheaper with unlimited data is a good argument in theory but don't you have to ask yourself a few questions like:

1) Who has the best coverage in my area and areas I'll likely be?

2) What is the speed comparison between the 3 providers on the 4S in my area and areas I'll likely travel? Follow up, do I care that the speed increase on the 4S for data is only even theoretically possible on At&T.

3) Based on my current usage of data, does it matter whether its actually unlimited or not?

And then based on the answer to those questions decide whether or not a savings of $100-$200 is worth it over the next 2 years?

Personally, I was going to switch to Spring from At&t - but based on the speed tests I have seen and the fact that Sprints network can't even theoretically take advantage of the HPSA upgrades - and the 4S doesn't have any LTE or 4G capability (and I will be stuck with the phone for at least another 16 months) it doesn't seem to justify the savings of about $5 a month.

Applecare?
AppleCare is more or less an extended warranty. It's not insurance. I want something to cover Loss and Theft.

I may wait out the initial wave and see what ATT and Verizon do with their pricing... I like sprint's plan but don't feel like switching if either of the other groups match.

It's worth mentioning that if this was the mentality you took when iPhone came to Verizon you would have ended up sitting around waiting for a long while, only to have AT&T refuse to match Verizon's unlimited. And then Verizon killed their unlimited plan.

I suspect Sprint killing their unlimited data plan is more likely than the other two reducing prices. Shit, AT&T just jacked up their texting rates and they probably knew this was coming.

Have the HTC Evo and my plan is up Aug 12', it will cost $550 for it. They just removed my premium and charge me $120 a year for 4g I cant use.

Thank you Sprint! Any ways to get it cheaper?

Question: Will Sprint work like Verizon where you can't talk and use 3G for data at the same time? Other than that possible limitation, Sprint sounds awfully compelling.

I'm also going with Sprint over Verizon almost definitely. I've been a long time Verizon customer, but not having any kind of Family Data Plan really hurts.... especially when I'm trying to enroll 4 smartphones under my plan.

Difference between Verizon and Sprint (in terms of price) at 4 smart phones - it's over 50 dollars, and I can't really justify 600 dollars per year differences, especially with 2gb cap....

This will be the case, unfortunately.

Is there something wrong with people's "t" key? Two people in a row have called Sprint "Spring" lol.

It says for Verizon, Mobile Hotspot is included with 4/7/12GB plans? I am a grandfathered unlimited, so technically it's all of those. Does that mean I get iPhone 4S Mobile Hotspot for free?

iCloud kinda throws this up into the air though, don't you think?

I suppose (I am grandfathered in with At&t so it doesn't matter too much for me) but I am pretty heavy internet surfer/work email with large attachments smart phone user and my data usage rate over the past year has stayed within .9 GB to 1.1 GB. Do you think iCloud will push more than a 1gb a month? If so, then At&t and others are going to be hurting big time.

Anyway, maybe it differs for others, but the slightly lower costs doesn't justify the switch for me when taking all the factors into consideration. I was pretty disappointed d in the speed reports on Sprint.

I explored a family plan with GF on verizon and our costs would actually go up! Fuck that

There's one way around the talk and surf by connecting to a wireless network and talk.

Yeah, it's the same limitation.
