Regarding clock speed, Geekbench will always give you varied results. I get different figures on my iPad, ranging from 800 to 900 MHz because the OS is dynamically adjusting it. The 1 GHz figure is just the max it'll go.

When you're not doing anything intensive, it'll automatically reduce it to save battery.

This is what I thought it did, so I don't see why they can't have them in sync at their peak performance and then clock lower for better battery life when needed. Or restrict more often at the OS level and have it peak higher if needed within a game.

Also, how do we know the providers are paying the full cost for each of their phones? I have a hard time believing providers are shelling out $850 each when the buy hundreds of thousands of the devices at a time. Surely subsidize some of the cost for customers that sign new contracts, but are they really paying Apple the full price (the price customers who buy off contract pay) for each device?
Yes. This is the model that handset manufacturers operate under.

Initially, Apple had a deal with AT&T that included profit sharing from contracts. They rejiggered that deal to just pay for the phones a year or two afterwards.

Ya, but you seem to either ignore or under value the point of the price the actual customers see which affects how many they sell. The lower price is one of the main reasons you see so many preorders. If Apple sold them at $600 to $800 a pop, you can bet preorders would be smaller in number. Ignoring the price point the customer sees is ignoring one of the reasons that the number of preorders is so high.

How did you glean that I'm ignoring anything from my post? What did I say AT ALL about WHY they sold so many devices? Where are you getting your information from if not my post? My thoughts? Are you a mind reader Marty?

I made one point: That's a shit ton of revenue for Apple.. every other reply was pointlessly pointing out that cell phones are subsidized.. as if.. somehow.. I had missed that fact.

This is a stupid argument so I'm done after this, but you were talking about how it was amazing that Apple sold so many phones with a price tag of $600+ when in reality most people aren't seeing that cost upfront.

Well, that's what they do now. But if you're talking about max or default clock speed, I doubt the 4S can push 1 GHz (just like how the iPhone 4 was maxed at 850 MHz and the iPad 1 at 1 GHz). Heat dissipation and battery.

That's pretty impressive. It must be quite the love and hate relationship between the providers and the iPhone.

It's all 100% love.

The average plan attached to a smart phone is well over $100. Even low balling at $100 / month a 2 year contract represents a promise of $2,400 to the company.

For AT&T, that $2,400 x 200,000 pre-orders represents $480 million in revenue they can count on over the next 2 years.

The subsidy is $350 x 200k = $70 million.

Easily worth it and then some.

Ya, I'm talking about the max when comparing the iPad to the iPhone. You figure it'd be less fragmented to have them clocked the same. I can understand maybe limiting it at the OS level more or something like that, but I don't see the harm in keeping them on par for max performance. Most likely that would only happen with a game and it would be limited to when that specific app is focused and running. The heat aspect certainly makes more sense, but if you're playing an intensive game, the battery is going to be chewed up regardless, just not quite as fast.

Anyone else excited for Friday?

YES. I ordered a new phone on an impulse but I'm getting gadget fever. Using my busted iPod Touch on the train this morning really reminded me how badly I need something new. Can't wait!

I'm trying not to myself.. not entirely sure I'll get my phone that day since I pre-ordered at 10AM PST.

But it's been over a year since I bought myself a gadget.. used to buy every damn thing that came out.. divorce sucks.

Sure, but I bet the relationship with Samsung, LG, HTC, etc. and their Android phones is quite a bit more in favor of the providers. Then again, individual Android phones don't bring in nearly the same amount of interest as the iPhone. I imagine iPhone contracts are a bit more stable, too.

Very excited. First time I've ever upgraded my iPhone.

I've had dumbphones up until the release of the 3GS so this is the first time I've really cared about upgrading.

I'm not sure the handset side of things is all that different between Apple and the others, other than the original iPhone being "subsidized" through contract revenue sharing, something AT&T was keen to ditch.

You could be right, but I don't think the difference is all that large between the price the handset carriers charge. Either way, they are top dog, so can demand higher fees.

And Apple does more via their software to protect the interest of the carriers than anyone offering an Android based product.

Someone at work told me I should get otterbox. Is this a good case? I see there are different kinds. What a good one?
i have the otterbox defender series for my blackberry. i've found it to be extremely protective. they aren't the most stylish of cases, but i trust them the most. i've thrown my phone around a lot and it's in perfect condition. i ordered the white defender series for my iphone 4s so i hope it works out ha.

I love mine - have it for the 3GS. It's housed in a plastic shell which is then covered in a silicone jacket. It also has a built-in screen protector so you don't need a separate one. I've dropped my phone from like 3-4 feet off the ground and it's fine.

Downsides is that it's bulky and that the silicone will easily grip the fabric of your pockets.

I mostly love it for being able to use it in the rain/wet areas without caring. Favorite moment was standing in the World of Color wet zone and just recorded bits and pieces of the show without caring about getting wet.

Hehe as much as I am excited for mine I'm actually vicariously more psyched for all those people who will be upgrading from a 3GS or some other vastly inferior phone. Their worlds are gonna get rocked! Is that weird?

Very much so. My first iPhone - been using blackberries for the past several years. I have a 1st gen iPod touch, but that doesn't count. Happy to consolidate my mp3 player and phone into one.

On the other hand, I won't be home Friday until early in the evening after an outing with a coworker so I may either miss the delivery or it will be waiting for me at my mailbox (not the safest location). In a way I'm hoping it will get delivered Saturday, while I'm home.

My sister's coming from a 3G to a 4S whenever Best Buy starts carrying them. (Reliably, where she doesn't have to pre-order)

Friday 1AM, 16GB White

Well here's hoping... I got my orders in around 5-6 am EST, 1 16GB white and 1 16GB black. The black says processing, the white says backordered from ATT.com...

I just got an e-mail from Sprint that includes an "estimated delivery date" of 10/10/2011. I know that almost definitely won't happen, but I'd love to get it today.

My order through AT&T shipped. Here's hoping I get it Thursday.

Likely means AT&T has paid for shipping.. they probably won't actually send the first batch out until Wednesday.

Unless you have a tracking number that says something other than "Billing information received" or whatever.

I caved last night after adding and removing it from my Verizon cart for about five days. 16GB Black 4S, shipping on the 20th. Abandoning my Google overlords for the next two years.

Oh god, I'm about to do the same.....

Has anyone had any issues changing the address with sprint?

I called and they called UPS and UPS told them that they have a mandate from sprint to not change addresses.

Anyone?

The way I understand it, if you're a new Sprint customer, they'll only ship to the address listed as the billing address on your card.

I'm excited for Wednesday. Since I'm not eligible for an upgrade as least I'll have a new OS to fiddle with.

Same here. Im not eligible for a discounted upgrade until next year. Although I could just bite the bullet and pay full price $600 for the upgrade.

Actually, neither apple.com nor att.com let me ship to anything but my billing address.

I can't be here on Fri to sign for the thing. I wonder if I can get them to not require a signature.
If you've ordered through apple.com you can fill out a form at the website that will allow them to waive the signature requirement. Of course, if it gets stolen off your stoop, you're screwed.

Really? I managed to change my shipping address after I placed my order. It was supposed to ship to my house, but it's now shipping to my workplace in San Francisco.

I'm upgrading from the 3GS. I partly know what to expect because my better half couldn't resist buying the 4 and I told myself I would hold out till the following model. But man... my days of being jealous of his are almost over. :P

(And he couldn't stand the thought that I'd have the better model - so he's upgrading too. Tried to give me his 4 but I didn't wait just to have something I could have had a year ago. *chuckles*)

I'm looking forward to it immensely (White 32GB 3GS > White 64GB 4S). ^_^

Still curious as to whether I can sign up for an iCloud me.com address though and then change my main Apple ID to match it!
