i know, right? i'm hoping that the fact that there are 4 huge apple stores in manhattan will take some of the heat off. also, i'm convinced nobody wants to be in downtown brooklyn at 7am.

You live in New York bro there is no hope for you at all. Had you said 40 stores you might have had a chance.

Here's what I don't get about this -- how do they know? I sort of thought that tethering via Jailbreaking was just as simple as bridging the 3G radio into the WiFi radio, how would the carrier even know? Why would the iPhone tell the carrier about the status of the WiFi radio? Unless they're just detecting it by bandwidth usage, but wouldn't that have tons of false positives for Netflix users?

I googled it, and found a bunch of speculation that basically boiled down to every method either being inaccurate or relying on the device cooperating in some kind of way at narcing you out.

Activation question:

Right now I have a RAZR on AT&T and I'm getting a 4S. Yeah I know, big upgrade. So to activate do I have to put my old SIM card into my new phone? Because that card has got to be like 10 years old. Is it possible to activate another way and still keep the same phone number?

The phone will come with a micro-SIM already installed. AT&T will ensure the number is transferred over from one SIM to the other remotely, and (hopefully) within a few minutes of running through the iPhone's simple setup procedure.

omg that is perfect, thanks! So would I still be able to use my RAZR or will that automatically be deactivated?

I am trying to figure out whether I should get a 4 or a 4S. Is the main difference between these two phones just the processing speed??
Main differences are the speed and the camera and Siri.

bugs me that it requires signature upon delivery...

This is annoying but there is a workaround if you are on Verizon for sure and potentially other carriers besides AT&T. If it is shipping via UPS you can use the new UPS MyChoice feature to authorize delivery without signature before it goes out tomorrow. You have to sign up for it but it's free and can also give you things like email alerts when it is out for delivery and when delivery is confirmed.

Sadly AT&T has decided to disable the authorized release function for their shipments, but other carriers may be lucky. That is if you are willing to let your new phone sit there while at work.

The main difference is Siri.

Then the camera.

Then Nuance dictation throughout the OS.

Then games.

Then speed.

Later on there will be new iPhone features that will only be supported by the 4S phone and newer models. Soon having a 4 will be like its been for the 3G owners since OS4 came out.

Doubt it. It'll be more similar to the 3GS, which is still going quite strong to be honest.

The original and 3G iPhones were really on a whole different level.

Got a phone call from AU (the new CDMA carrier in Japan) saying that I could get my phone tomorrow beginning at 8AM. That's about 10.5 hours from now!

Well have fun with your max 3Mbps down and 1.8Mbps up speeds on AU.

Got the call from Softbank yesterday. I'll be picking up my 64GB black at the store in 10 hours or so. Now to see if I really get 14Mbps down on Softbank as they have said.

The 4 wasn't a huge leap in processing power from the 3GS, but the 4S is. This will allow for new features that weren't possible with the plain 4. That's why the 4 will end up like the 3G later on down the line. What you just said in your post is kind of backwards.

But aren't Siri and the voice command thing available on iPhone 4 when you download the update??
No one knows yet if Siri is hardware dependent on the 4S so it may never be available on the 4 from what I understand.

i'm debating between a lifeproof case and an iskin claro case.

does anyone have any experience with these two cases and could give a mini review?

I'm considering calling UPS tonight, having them hold my package at their facility so that I can go pick it up myself. I'd much rather drive 30 min out of my way than to have to wait 5 hours for the driver to make his rounds.
what do you have to bring in order to pick it up at ups? I want to pick mine up as well but I don't know how far away the place is or where its at. They usually deliver to me at 5 and that's pretty lame for me to always be the last one on route. The driver needs to do reverse order or something when delivering...

They want you to upgrade, so no, it's only a 4S feature. Don't anticipate it coming to any other device. That said, Apple is offering some very nice trade-in values for the iPhone4s, nearly pays for the price of the upgrade (if you are due for one).

Ok, this is awesome.

Thanks guys. I guess I misunderstood what the new update included. I guess it is time for a 4S.

What is the trade in value for a 3G phone?

Fuck you Rogers.

White 64GB queue: 13XX. Absolutely no info other than a stupid number.

I think i'm just gonna go to a rogers store and try to get one on friday... But I wonder if they'll still charge me $40 if I cancel my preorder if I get one locally?

It's simply the law of diminishing marginal utility. A 2X jump meant a lot on those pre-historic iPhone days. Today you can easily tell that it doesn't mean nearly as much. The new iOS runs ever so smooth on both 3GS and iPhone 4, for example.

There will always be exclusive features for new hardware, but it will never be as embarrassing for any of these phones to run their latest update as it was for 3G to run iOS 4.

Well, looks like mine is also on track for delivery tomorrow, end of day. Unfortunately I probably won't be home until around 5-6pm after work so chances are that I may miss it. I wonder if they don't leave it at my door/mailbox (indoor in apt building) if they'll try again the next day. Does UPS normally do a 2nd attempt on Saturdays? This is a 2nd Day Air shipment.

Mine was scanned at 9:05 AM in Louisville, looks like our phones are riding together :)

I wonder how many air freighters it takes to carry all of the pre-ordered iPhones into North America, if the freighters are laden with iPhones and nothing else. 1? Maybe 2?

My update:

Ordered at: 10:00AM PST (10 hours after launch)
Ordered from: ATTwireless.com
Status history: Backordered until Monday, then processing, now says Shipped, tracking number shows no FedEx info.

Status Update: Tracking from FedEx now shows info.. claims delivery should be on the 14th, the package was last scanned in Memphis, TN at 8 this morning.

edit: 32gb Black edition - Looks like this was the one to order ;)

woah, i called my shitty telus store that has always screwed up shit in the past and they said my reserved 64gb white can be picked up tomorrow! i totally expected them to be getting it late. now i'm totally stoked.

My update:

Ordered at: 3:30AM PST (30 minutes after launch)
Ordered from: ATTwireless.com
Status history: Backordered until JUST NOW. Hopefully the processing and shipping times have changed, or I won't be getting this until next week. Fingers crossed for Fed Ex overnight shipping sometime this afternoon. But hell, what is with ATT and the 64gb black edition? Lowest in stock for sure.

How are the 3GS boxes?

The 4 box was like half the volume of the 3G box which must have saved Apple a fair whack in shipment costs.

does anyone have any links to any of the main ios threads, like the gaming ones? a search just gave me individual game threads and the ios jailbreak thread.
