Vlah-deh Dee-vats.

Although I have a better name for him but that's not very appropriate.

Yes, that's why I told you to use the IMAP settings.

If you read/delete/write/whatever a message on Gmail, it will sync it to your phone 1-to-1. This is also true if you do that on your iPhone, as long as you are using IMAP.

Okay, thanks. So REALLY the only advantage to using the Exchange protocol is the added ability to sync Calendar and Contacts? Because if enabling the IMAP feature (which I have) is the exact same thing, I'll shut it off in the Exchange account and use that only for Contacts and Calendar syncing.

I haven't had any problems with them at all, but I'm on an iPhone 4. Don't know if that matters but Reminders has been startlingly accurate for me.

This was on an iPhone 4 too and it was something reasonably important. My wife was pretty annoyed that it failed to alert her and now I think she refuses to rely on it because it failed in her first experience.

Also, you could just create new contacts for places you frequent, and keep them in their own group so you don't have them cluttering up your main contacts list. Just make a group and call it "Address Book" but only sort your phone book by the iCloud/On This Phone setting.

I actually just set that up because of Reminders and it's a good tip. The only thing that sucks is how Apple doesn't let you manage or create groups on the phone itself.

It will sync your Calendars, too. It will ask you which to include: Mail, Calendars, Notes.

EDIT: Just tried it out. Added an event in my Gmail Calendar, it showed up on the phone. Then I deleted it from the phone, and it was gone on Gmail.

I can't find the thread that was created recently here on NeoGAF regarding ringtunes for messages etc.
Could somebody please link it?

I can't be sure, either, but I think it actually learns the more you use the address. When I first used it with my apartment, it reminded me as soon as I went in the front gate. Now it doesn't remind me until I'm actually climbing the stairs to my actual studio, in the back of the building. :O I don't know how it could know that but it's pretty cool.

Also I used it last night at my parent's house and it went off without a hitch as soon as I drove up their driveway.

Edit: The only thing I don't like is that is adds "house" to the end of the name. So when I use my apartment, it says "Remind me at My Apartment's House" which is stupid. I get why, because it'd normally be "Remind me at Sarah's House" or whatever, but I wish it knew when it's MY house. If you tell Siri "Remind me when I get home..." what does it say on the actual reminder?

I agree, that is incredibly obnoxious.

Maybe it works better and more precise locations which would be funny in a way. This was a hospital which of course is a much bigger building and plot of land. So maybe it triggers only when you're a lot closer to the location it thinks you're trying to use which would be easier on a house, but less so on a larger place like a store, school, or hospital. My wife and I discussed that possibility but then she thought it couldn't be true because if the idea is to remind you when you're nearby, like for a store, shouldn't it have a wider range in case you were in the area?

Strangely I can't think of any difficult to pronounce names right now, but for some names the phonetics are not easy to spell out.

Too bad I don't have a 4S or I would be trying to text all of my Indian and Korean friends and seeing how it handled it.

Drained my battery again last night and completely recharged it.

This time yesterday my battery was at 50%. Today, on the same usage, its 64%. I think it's improving over time for sure.

Do you want me to write up an intro to Metro UI so you can learn about the pivot and panorama controls and how they differ from the tab bar? Or perhaps you'd like a link to Palm's interface guidelines so you discover the app menu, gesture controls and dashboard widgets? I think you're just pulling my leg and you already know that iOS third party developers don't have the power to replace the preinstalled system apps, the notification system, Springboard, the multitasking bar and other fundamental parts of the user experience (unlike say in Android where developers have carte blanche and replacement launchers, for example, are very popular). If you really think the scope of possible changes for iOS is limited to themeing "Mail with red white and blue" then I'm wasting my time here. Carry-on.

If you think that panorama/pivot is fundamentally different than what iOS or Android do you are fooling yourself. Sure, it's a 'slick' transition if you like seeing parts of giant words, parts of off screen pages. It has a title that slides back and forth to show how deep you are - iOS has a title bar that sides to the left when you drill down, and when you hit the back button its swipes back to the right. Yes, it would be nice if Apple in addition to the title-bar back button would include a gesture to go back like on WP7. Can this work in all apps, no, but they have it working already in some, and it would be nice if more developers did it. WP7 also has a system that is similar to tabs, but instead of an area at the bottom that shows you which page/tab you are on it shows a centimeter of the next page on the right - they did this so that it is discoverable I think, personally I don't like having a portion of a page peak out from the right, but it makes sense. I believe the iOS method is more discoverable and functional, and that WP7's method is 'style over function' or really 'for the sake of being different'. You can like it, I don't mind, but I don't think it is as attractive, nor as easy as how Apple has it implemented on the iPhone. As for the WebOS menu - yeah I don't know much about it, it looks pretty much like a drop down menu to me, but I'd be willing to hear more about it.

My point is iOS does not need to be made 'modern' because it already is. And while there are some aesthetic changes that could be done, it really is limited only to a few controls and the default Apple apps.

Yes it is true that you can't replace the preinstalled system apps, but you can install apps that do the similar things. There are countless calculator/contact/calendar/todo/video player/music/photo apps in the appstore. Maybe it is time for Apple to include a 'default' application system so you can select which one you want to use like the let you choose mail/browser on the Mac. As to replacing the notification/springboard/multitasking bar. I think you would be hard pressed to find real people (you know, the ones that actually do things on their phone instead of posting on internet forums about the deficiencies of their toys) that give a fuck. My sister doesn't care that the mail's title-bar is blue. My grandpa doesn't care that the 'multitasking' bar has a canvas background, and replacing the springboard is stupid because it is one of the brilliant features of iOS.

Hopefully Apple does live icons and widgets in the notification shade in 6. I'd rather them work on more useful and interesting things, but I don't know how much longer I can continue to hear people bitch and moan about such things.

That article is probably a couple of years old since it talks about iOS3.0. That used to be the case, but not anymore.

No, it doesn't do contacts but you can periodically sync those using iTunes.

Okay, cool. Thanks for all your help, guys. Last question, though: Does it support multiple Google calendars?

If you setup gmail on the phone using the gmail option, it'll be IMAP. If you s et it up using the instructions on your link it'll be exchange, which uses push instead of fetch. Exchange will sync contacts.

I thought IMAP was for Push. It seems to be, anyway, when I emailed myself from another account.

So, what I think I'm going to do is just use the Gmail IMAP option for Mail and Calendar, and use Exchange for Contacts.

iMessage seems to work well, but I find it weird that it's in a separate window from texts. Like, when I open messages, I see my friends name twice: Once further down when I was texting her on her non-iPhone, and the iMessage window that I am talking to her now on her iPod Touch. Just think it's a little odd. But in her situation it's helpful since her iPod Touch may not always be able to receive them.

Also, as far as the GMail thing goes: Can't you just set it up on Exchange, only make it so Contacts is on, and use IMAP for email and calender? That would make sense.

When she sends iMessages from her iPod they are sent linked to her email address. On an iPhone, they are linked to your phone number.

All you have to do is add her iMessage email address to your contact for her. Voila.

I don't know how people have gotten so confused over iMessage, really. It's very simple.

So the news is making a big deal over Siri being able to use a locked phone......I don't think think they mentioned that Siri itself is in beta lol.

I do believe I'm getting excited. Hopefully receiving it before the weekend.

Any Aussies know how long it takes from this status to receiving it?

Siri can be turned off on the lockscreen through settings.

Not really confused, but just pointing that out. Makes sense though, when I click her contact in the iMessage window, her email is highlighted (I already had her email), and when I click it in the SMS window, her phone number is highlighted.

I have her turned off on lockscreen because when you try to use Siri while locked, she will ask you to unlock the phone first anyways.

It's just not explained well. Most of my non-tech friends asked me where they find it since they thought it was a standalone app like BBM, but it's just something that happens on the back end if it can.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. the IMAP doesn't allow syncing of Contacts, unfortunately. The Exchange protocol DOES do all three, though, but I like this set up better. Makes me feel better, at least :p

I hate that pictures I set as profile pics turn out to be all wonky on Gmail, though. That's unfortunate :( . They seem fine when I upload them to Gmail first, though. Anyone know a solution?

Also, for Calendar syncing, I can only seem to sync ONE calendar (my main Calendar in Gcal). Does anyone know if there is a way to view all my calendars? I have four. (example: I have one called "Personal", which is my main one, and I have another one called "Work", another for school, and another one called important. This has been my setup for forever, so it's unfortunate if I'm only able to view one of these :(

Don't even get me started on if I can view other characters of people I'm sharing with :p . This is why a native Gcal app would be BALLER on iPhone. Do it, Google! (they never will, though :( )

I was driving home with my two friends from the mall, and I recieved a new text message. I told Siri to read it to me, and she did.

We then spent the rest of the car ride sending my phone text messages and having Siri read them, and laughing our asses off. You know, because we're like, 8.

You can sync all your calendars if you have it set up through Exchange. Go to m.google.com/sync on your iPhone (I think that's the site) and check what you want to sync.

There's a text-to-speech in iOS that isn't just for Siri? Oh god, my life is complete (when my 4S arrives). Next up: Sirioke. Go into the first karaoke bar I see, armed with my 4S. Hilarity will follow.

True. Why is this?
Because its the boring standard. Why else? I'm not really sure how anyone is able to form an opinion of Apple either positive or negative. They just exist, man.

If you're a fan you're unimagitive and unable exhibit free thinking, if you're a hater you're just ignorant. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

It's not actually that simple, unless I've missed something. My dad has an iPhone and an iPad. When he iMessages me from his iPad, on my iPhone it creates a new text stream for messages sent via his email adress as apposed to his iPhone. However, his email address and phone number are both on the same contact.

If I were to delete his phone number, and just text to his email, then they would all go in the same stream, and my iMessages to him would go to both his iPhone and his iPad.

It's the same if you know a person with two cellphone numbers. Just because they're listed under the same contact as "iPhone" and "Work" doesn't mean anything, you'll still have two conversation streams with the same name.

As a result of this annoyance, my cousin Matt has three different contacts in my fucking phone [Matt, Matt GV, and Matt 911] so I can tell what number he's texting me from.

OK, I'm really disappointed in the battery life on the 4s. Am I doing something wrong? I'm simply using its features as expected and I'm getting much worse results than I did with my 1.5 year old 4. I can barely reach the end of the day before it's empty even with moderate use. :\

Turned off bluetooth? Any push email accounts you don't want? Notifications or Location aware in any apps you don't want (I had, for example, an ESPN app that was sending me stuff for sports/teams I had accidentally turned on and forgot about)? Brightness/auto brightness setting?

I don't have a 4S, but my 4 was draining a little fast after the update and those are the things off the top of my head I can think to check. Might want to drain it, then charge it fully, then see what you Usage stats are after another drain.

I heard on Tested that the 4S's battery life is significantly worse than the 4. That will definitely suck for those who have become spoiled or used to the battery life on the 4.

Did you do a battery reset? My 4 was a little shitty after the update and it went back to almost where it was before after a reset.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I also had an iPhone 4 and it runs rings around the 4. I used to use my 4 heavily and it would last me through the day no problem. At my old job we had no access to gmail and facebook was blocked. So I used both on my phone all day. I dont even work there anymore and don't have these restrictions and I still cannot make it through the day.

I would also add that I ran all the iOS5 betas and still didnt have such horrible battery life.

edit - add comments about the 4

I feel like Apple is looking into changing UIs. The homescreen on a stock iPhone already has more than one home screen. They have to be thinking about something.

However: It works well and is dead simple. It is iconic. Apple doesn't do overhauls without redoing the whole thing. They just continue to improve steadily.

Hey, anyone ever notice? Most of the iOS updates are things tucked away. If you ignored the icons, you probably couldn't tell iOS5 from iOS1 without tinkering a bit.

Also, LOL at people who used to say "Apple doesn't do Betas" (LKBAP).

Was actually just thinking about this yesterday. It was the first time I got to play around with a 4S.

Almost a week in. Sprint's 3G is super slowwwww....but otherwise this has been a revelation coming from a old, mostly-broken Android 2.1 device. I just wish the 3G was faster; it's nice that it's unlimited but like Gary Whitta said, it doesn't matter if you can't use it. I had a few good reviews on Sprint before I got it, and now this. Hopefully it gets better.

I'm sad that Sprint's service is so slow, it's embarassing because I've used and loved Sprint before and recommended it to a bunch of friends who are switching from AT&T. I saw on Sprint's twitter that they're improving their 3G and obviously this is a big adjustment for them so I hope they do get this fixed soon. Sprint was never the fastest 3G but everyones saying it's comparable to edge. -_-

Anyone else having their 4S randomly losing wifi? It'll sometimes stop loading mid-page but show that it's connected to the network. I'll disable wifi then enable it again and I won't connect back to the network.

My 3GS connects perfectly and has never had this problem.
