The only thing that really bugs me about iOS is the lack of a filesystem. I don't know the rationale for it, and it doesn't seem like one exists, because I don't think filesystems are really all the complicated for most end users these days.

I'm an advanced user and I hate file systems. I assure you most end users don't want anything to do with a file system.

That all just seems so crazy to me. I don't know. Its just one of those things that seems like all politics. I mean, there is no REAL reason I shouldn't be able to do that.

I also have a stupid question. Can I set the phone to automatically sync with itunes when its plugged in? I know it syncs with icloud but I notice that new additions to my mac's itunes library don't "magically" show up on my device.

It just seems needlessly complicated to have to send files between apps. Even a series of folders that front-end a filesystem so you can have some control about where your files are stored and downloaded.

Oh don't get me wrong, that workflow is batshit crazy. It's likely so users are encouraged to buy music through iTunes instead of allowing someone like Amazon to allow direct downloads of mp3s to iPhones.

Hard connect your phone to the computer and there is an option on the summary tab to "Sync over WiFi when connected to power" or something like that. Just check that box and you'll start syncing within a few seconds of plugging in when on the same network as that computer.

Your phone is automatically syncing but you need to make a playlist in itunes that includes the last songs you downloaded. (assuming you haven't set iTunes to sync all your music and playlists as you have the extra space)

I have a bunch of smart playlists of the last 100 songs that I've bought and that gets synced when I attach the phone to iTunes.

Yeah, I have that box checked. And new music doesn't show up unless I manually press the sync button. LC, so far I haven't filled my phone up yet so I just have it set to sync everything.

Oh are you using iTunes match? (you mention iCloud)

iTunes match turns off specific playlist syncing in iTunes. All your music just shows up on the iPhone but it's not downloaded to the device in the background. There's a cloud icon next to new stuff and you need to download the songs manually.

No. No itunes match.

I mentioned icloud because I think thats where my backups are going. I notice the little rotating arrows when I plug the phone in, but new music doesn't show up.

They are. I have worked with intelligent, otherwise competent people that are terrified of ever opening Explorer, so they never have.

Jobs was talking about killing file system access back in the '80s, because no one likes it and there are better ways to do it.

iOS isn't nailing it right now, but its his chance to make it reality.

So... You have iTunes set to sync all music to your iPhone. Your iPhone syncs other stuff to iTunes when plugged in. But new music in iTunes isn't getting copied over to the iPhone?

Did you check manually mange music by accident?

Cuz I have no idea. The syncing process is the basis of the entire iPod idea and I haven't had to fiddle with it ever for 6 years over multiple computers and iPods. Maybe someone else has an idea what's going on?

Can't entirely disagree with that, however anything that's more like a "file" that you need to use between apps I've been able to do without a problem.

Like downloading a zip file in Atomic, unzipping it in Filer and then viewing the unpacked video in Azul. Probably entirely like what you're getting at, but I find that I can create work flows that move items around my devices when it makes sense.

I hear ya, was just curious if there was some kind of workflow in Android that was really missing on the iOS side of things is all. I don't typically use Android devices for more than a few minutes here and there, so I'm nowhere near as versed in what they are truly able to do.
You're not so much moving them as making duplicates for each app to work with. It gets very frustrating if you have one file that you want to use back and forth across multiple apps while keeping the changes in sync. iCloud hasn't solved that either.

Well they should hurry the fuck up and implement one of those better ways then. Killing the file system and replacing it with this nonsense is not a solution.

These are what I have checked. I pretty much have never plugged my 4s into a computer since the day I got it. And music i add to my library doesn't transfer nightly when I plug the phone into the wall.

Seems Ok.

And the music tab in the iPhone page is checked to sync all music, too, as you mentioned.

Try a sync to the computer directly. Maybe this is some weird bug with the wifi sync?

And you're leaving iTunes open and they're on the same network right? Because if those three conditions are met it should automatically sync over wi-fi.

Yeah, my music page is set to entire library. Direct sync works fine. And wifi sync works fine when I manually trigger it. Its just that I want it to happen every time I plug the phone in, so I never have to worry about new music not being synced.

maybe i really should go see a genius. i blew off my last appt.

Yes, my computer is never turned off.

Can anyone remind me what is lost during a restore? Will my game saves be retained? I just noticed 4GB of "Other" and want to clear that up ASAP. It's been a while, and I don't remember what all is affected.

I just did a restore a couple of days ago, yes game data and other app data is backed up. Pretty much everything is backed up as far as I've noticed.

Yes, my computer is never turned off.
Do you have auto sync disabled in prefs -> devices?

Can anyone recommend a good hip case? I have the bumper on it now, and most of the cases I've tried are either too big or too tight once the phone is in.

So, this draining battery problem is now at a completely unacceptable level for me. It's been less than two hours since I took it off the charger and the battery is at 60% despite only using the phone for about 30 minutes.

I have location services off, wifi off, mail is on fetch mode not push. I think I'm just going to take it to the Apple store because frankly this is bullshit.

So a friend and I were trying to kill some time and thought we'd watch some Netflix. I plugged in his Apple VGA adapter into my 4s and my iPhone desktop popped up and mirrored everything I was doing. He was like "WTF?!?", plugged the same adapter into his iPhone 4 and nothing appeared.

I thought mirror mode was only possible on high end Android phones? That's a pretty badass feature that I never knew the 4s supported, much better than the lousy Siri app.

EDIT: Also tried out GTA3 using his adapter which looked great on his LCD and was more fun to play.

I have a question that involves the iPhone 4.

When I sync it to iTunes, it tells me I have 5.3 gbleft, but when I look in the settings>general>about it says I have 3.2 gb. I have an iPhone 4, 16 GB, AT&T. I'm asking cause I'm running out of space. :( I'm definitely getting 32 next update.

On a Dutch website I saw there's now some kind of customization kit available, which can make the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone light up when the screen is turned on. I think it looks very awesome, and makes me wonder why Apple didn't choose to make this a standard in the first place. Looks very cool IMO. Ofcourse it drains the battery I'm sure, but like Macbooks, it just looks nice.

It doesn't drain the battery according to the creator. Besides I think they stopped selling them yesterday. I almost ordered one but I want it with the "Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011" text as well.

Solved my battery issue:

Location Services --> System Services --> OFF*

* Turned off all features in this category.

The services in this category are used primarily for outgoing data collection to Apple and has little-to-zero effect on your phone's functionality. Time zones are still set, GPS works as intended, compass still calibrates, etc.

I'm only losing about 1-2% per hour now. Hope this helps others.

This is amazing. I had everything except the first 2 turned off in that screen figuring I needed them.

I turned everything off last night to test. I'd typically been getting about 6.5 to 7 hrs of heavy use but I'm at 38% left after 5 hrs and 18 mins!

You know what would be a really intelligent addition to the next iPhone?
A speaker on the right side of the iPhone.

If they want to sell it as a multimedia device and gaming handheld, it's more than annoying that you cover the speaker in most games (that want you to hold the iPhone horizontally) with your hand.

I don't understand this design decision..

Just got a call from my telco offering me a free upgrade to the 4S 32GB so I accepted. I wasn't in a rush to upgrade from my iPhone 4 but now I'm really looking forward to the new camera and mucking around with Siri.

A friend is going ape shit to get a 16g 4S after playing with mine yesterday at Downtown Disney, and is having a ridiculously hard time finding one in the wild on AT&T (he gets huge discounts on his service)

Even on Apple's reservation system for the three stores locally, no luck.

What's his best bet right now to get one before Christmas? Apple Store reservation? Best Buy? AT&T store?

Help him GAF. =)

Yep, this kogadget company was selling them. I posted about this last page and nobody said anything about it. They may still be available on their facebook, but they originally said they would only be selling them for 2 days to avoid Apple suits. I bought one.

Turn the phone around. There you go, the speaker is now on the right side.

Am I crazy for wanting to buy a $199 case?

http://i.imgur.com/O2mHv.jpg[IMG] [IMG]http://i.imgur.com/4bhju.jpg[IMG]
I want to say yes...so I'll say "yes".

That being said, that sounds like something crazy I'd do myself...so far be it for me to hold another man down!

Looks pretty boss, but you could get those bamboo ones for a lot less if wood is your look.

So if I renew my contract on ATT with a 4S, will I be able to unlock it so I can use it when I travel abroad to Europe for vacation? Or is the only way still to buy it unlocked off-contract from Apple? I understand that if you buy it from Verizon/Sprint it already comes unlocked.
