I use it a lot for reminders and alarms. As well as texting/calling. It's currently not being advertised as much more than that. So I'm not sure why anyone would expect more it's a personal assistant. So it does things like take notes, reminders events ect, as well as some basic information for you. I'm pretty happy with it thus far.

So I am having some strange issues with my 4s.

I just went to use it and the thing wouldn't turn on. When I looked closer, I could see a very dim spin wheel (like the one seen when you turn the device off). I couldn't turn it off or on, and it did nothing when I plugged it into the charger. I finally was able to turn it off by holding down the home button and the power button. When I turned it back on, the battery was at 40% even though the last time I used it it was around 90%. The thing was very warm to the touch as well. Anyone else have this happen to them?

Also, sometimes I randomly get the txt sound, but when I check, I have no new texts, or emails or anything. :/

You know, ever since iOS5 came out the thing's been buggy has hell. A month ago my iPhone started to have a hard time triangulating my position for any of the apps to work correctly. Other apps were running slow and, of course, there's still the considerable battery drain. I did a Restore yesterday. I've seen an improvement. But, for how long? For how long?

Gaf,

I'm looking to go purchase a 32gb 4S tonight after work. I currently utilize a Droid Charge. I have been really into romming, customization, etc in Android, but I'm really just getting burned out on it. Everything seems a bit clunky.

With that said, I'd like to know, aside from pulling my photos and vid's off the sd card, how can I save all my phone contacts that are synced with google and import them into the phone?

I utilize my phone for the corporate sector as well, and I can't afford to loose a contact. I also don't want to have to manually enter EVERYTHING into the phone when I got it.

One more question - I understand I can return the phone in 30 days to VZW and pay a restocking fee if I hate it, is this still true?

Thanks guys! Looking forward to give IOS a whirl. Looking forward to vocal reminders via SIRI.

Your contacts are synced with google already as you have an android. On the iphone you can add the gmail address as an exchange (or i think gmail now) and it'll grab your contacts.

Also if you want to use Siri, add yourself as a local contact rather than google. As Gmail/Exchange doesn't have the fields for sister/brother etc.

Get it at an apple store. At verizon its 14 days and a restocking fee. No fee and 30 days at apple.

Thank you sir. When I say "contacts" I mainly mean, phone numbers with names. Old school "address book" for dumb phones. Will this port these into my list as well?

Just want to make sure I don't need some 3rd party application to pull that data out.

Thanks again guys, I look forward to joining in on the gamecenter friends thread as well.

Apple store is 50 miles from me and no stock, I'll be able to decide in 14 days I think. That is good info to know though.

On a related note, if my vzw bought 4s takes a dive, does my device insurance cover it?

No you still have the 200$ deductable. Their insurance is only good for loss or theft.

Does anyone know of a good iphone 4s case? I found this case so far, but are there ones that offer better protection?

Got this one off Amazon:

Speck Pixel HD in Cobalt. I quite like the low profile of it. May order the gray one soon...

My deductible is much lower than that, but I was more referring to hardware problems within the warranty period. I didn't know if I could go through VZW or have to deal with apple.

At one point, I thought only applecare was supported.

Thanks!

Edit - I sounded like a D-Bag with the lower deductible. My apologies, not trying to be like that at all.

You'll need to make sure your droid charge is set to sync all its contacts with google. I think by default it would be but check in your settings. If its syncing then they'll all be on googles servers and ready to sync back with your iphone.

Done and done, I've switched about 4 or 5 times since the beginning of 2011, so I am familiar with that process. I just was not sure with how IOS would handle it.

Does any one know the best way to upload pictures from my 4s to Facebook? On my old htc hero all I had to do was select the photo from my album the one of the sharing options was Facebook. On my iPhone the only way I've been able to upload themis through the Facebook app..

I was hoping more for a way to do it without an app i guess.. Same with uploading to flicker.

What about backing up the pictures onto my computer? With my HTC I made a folder and just made a complete back up of my SD card to my computer. When I sync my phone to itunes what does it do with my photos? The only way I can see them is if I import them to iphoto from my phone. (on a mac)

Sorry me stupid..

I know you said you're on Mac, but this works on Windows. Just open up the iPhone (If you can) from your file explorer. The photos should be in a folder. If that doesn't work then try dropbox or emailing them all to yourself.

I just downloaded the iCloud Windows application and all my photos automatically appear on my PC now.

I have finally decided to spent some money on a Bluetooth headset for my iPhone, can you guys recommend a great one? Maybe one which shows the battery life of the headset as well? Any preferred brand?

This may apply to the iphone, but as I was always on an Android device, the rate was low - I've actually never had to use it in 5 years as a customer, but I have looked, time to time, just in case at the rate. I'll report back once I'm able to get my iphone.

On that note, I went to a Verizon retail store last night that said they had 4S stock when I called ahead. I waited 45 minutes only for them to tell me "Oh yeah, we have them, but I can't sell it to you. I can only sell these phones to new lines"....

*Enter gamestop "did you pre-order it?" rage with a stack of games behind the register*

Edit: I was also in this insurance plan since I was an Alltel customer.

So I just checked /r/jailbreak on reddit (sorry for no links, on phone), and it's looking like the A5 jailbreak is like, hours away. On Monday pod2g posted a picture of the 4S untethered and jailbroken, and things have been really moving since then. I'm excited.

I just got a 4s and I'm trying to figure out how to organize and manage my mail, calendar, notes, contacts, and reminders with my windows 7 laptop.

Whats the best way to go about this?

I think I've decided to pick up the Pixelskin HD for the Iphone 4S and maybe have my girlfriend knit me a pouch for it. Besides that, does anyone have a good recommendation for a microfiber cloth to keep the screen clean?

Use the Image Capture application if you just want to import/backup your photos/videos. It should be in your Applications.

Remember to untick "delete after import". :)

Also, doing things via apps rather than to apps is how iOS generally works. Some exceptions apply.

4S-GAF wtf is going on here, I thought this iOS software was untouchable..

My mom's iPhone (US, Verizon) has been recently getting a sim failure error on her phone randomly and she told me she's been restarting the phone as a temp fix. It's been going on for three days now. I searched on Google and saw others experiencing the same thing. Has there been a fix for this or does she have to take it back to the Apple Store? (we got this like a month ago)

Thanks

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
Getting a 4S tomorrow (Early birthday present to myself haha)

What are some must-have apps? I already have a bunch of stuff from when I had an iPod touch like Amazon, Netflix, etc. And I know of stuff like Reeder and Tweetbot. More looking for apps that are great/useful, but might "slip through the cracks" as it were.

So tonight I was at outback steak house with some friends and my iphone was on the table when the waiter accidentally spilt a water which got a little on my arm and the majority that landed on the table puddled around my phone :(

So everything was working fine but now I'm noticing that its not making unlocking sounds, keyboard clicks, or anything other than playing my ringtone when I get a call. It will work on speaker phone, but music, videos, anything else I can't control the volume. Its silent and there just isn't a bar to change the volume. The volume buttons don't do anything either.

He said that if I had a problem with it that all I had to do was call the restaurant but I really don't want to have to replace it. I'm going to try to restore it through itunes but if that doesn't work any other options?

Also now it seems to randomly work for a minute at a time sometimes :/

I don't really have any solutions, I just wanna say that situations like yours are exactly the reason I'm hoping Apple, and other OEMs, incorporate that awesome water-proof coating stuff they showed at CES.

Thats pretty cool. It wasn't even that much water. Like a small puddle underneath it and some on top.. Is there a little pink thing like other phones have to tell if it has water damage? I figured this phone could take a bit of abuse. My other phone and my 2nd gen ipod touch took all kinds of shit. Like when my ipod bounced about 3 feet off the side walk and bounced multiple times after that and the only real damage was a nice dent in the corner.

Why would you assume water damage is less damaging than dropping it?

And how is electronics less damaged by water?

because if you turn it off and then let it dry for 24 hours its entirely possible that the electronics won't be damaged.

I had a fully electric RC car(the real ones that you build not the cheap radio shack shit) and i lost control of it and it went fully submerged into a puddle, i immediately unplugged everything and let it dry and it was fine.

Related story, my coworkers wife dropped her iphone in water, they put it in a bag with rice over night and it did the same thing where it wouldnt make ringtone sounds for a little while but then it started doing it a few hours later.

I did the same with an RC car years ago. Electronics nowadays that can't take a drop or two or a splash of water shouldn't exist. Especially something that you carry around in your pocket everyday. Like say, a cell phone..

Although last night I said screw it to doing the restore thing because I was tired so I just went to sleep and so far its only not worked maybe 4 times today. I didn't turn it off or anything I just plugged it in to charge and left it over night.

Also sorry Tunesmith, I just saw that I'll try that :)

SiriToggles Lets You Toggle Settings and Launch Apps Using Siri
SiriToggles is a new tweak for the iPhone that lets you toggle settings and launch apps using Siri.

SiriToggles adds a load of new features to Siri on the iPhone 4S (it also works on older devices using something like spire to get Siri). SiriToggles allows you to tell Siri to enable/disable certain settings, get info on battery level, change your screen brightness and even launch apps.

Usage:
For toggling - You can say either "enable/disable" or "turn on/turn off" then one of the following things: wifi, bluetooth, airplane mode, cellular data

To get the battery level - say anything like "how much battery do I have left" or "what is my remaining battery percentage"

To change the brightness - say "set/change backlight/brightness to x%"

To launch an app - say "launch app" then the name. For example, to open safari say "launch app safari"

You can download SiriToggles free from the BigBoss Cydia Repository.

Thats fucking sweet. So are these features that were "dormant" in iOS5 or are they full on hacks/tweaks?
IIRC, when you ask Siri to launch an app it says "I can't do that, yet."
