I'll ask again...

If I get a new iPhone, will I no longer be able to use my original iPhone w/ the same account?

Don't know for sure, but it would seem so. You'll need to activate the new iPhone in store when you buy it, and if you're an existing customer for AT&T they'll want your account information so you can keep your number, etc. I'm sure the new phone will replace the old phone on your account. You may be able to do some SIM swapping I suppose, but it begs the question, why would you want to?

Also, how many carriers let you have multiple phones on one single user account?

I'm not even thinking about picking up an Iphone for awhile, but is it possible to get a 3G without a data plan (but with AT&T voice) and if so how much would it be? If I got an Edge Iphone (hopefully for cheap on ebay), without the data plan what would I be missing compared to the 3G Iphone?

the date is required. i was actually wondering what would happen if down the road you wanted to remove the data plan for your phone. Curious if they would let you do it, or make you cut the contract to get out of it (with early term fee).

You can get out of it. There were various reports of iPhone users calling up AT&T and asking to have the data plan removed. But really, not having the data plan with an iPhone is missing out on half the experience. Might as well buy a cheaper phone and get a Touch.

Can I sign up an Edge Iphone with AT&T without data? I thought this was doable.

AT&T makes it EXTREMELY difficult to get a data plan off an iPhone now. In fact, nobody that you talk to will believe its even possible because the computer tells them its not.

iTunes 7.7 to hit in "a few hours." (7.7 is required to update to the 2.0 software and browse the App Store on your PC/Mac.) Also, MobileMe is scheduled to go up live tonight. There will be a 6-hour window of downtime for .Mac users beginning at approximately 6 pm PST.

There's speculation that this means the 2.0 software might be available as early as tonight or tomorrow. In other words, before the 11th.

IMO, that might be a smart move to stagger some things before the 11th otherwise you're gonna have millions downloading iTunes 7.7, the 2.0 software, activating phones, all at the same time worldwide. Stagger that shizzle! (And let me play with the 2.0 software before I head to the store to pick up the 3G, darnit!)

Will Itunes 7.7 have new features>? i cant seem to find info on what it will include, just that its coming.

It's unlikely that it'll have specifically new features outside of iPhone 2.0 software update stuff (App Store access, MobileMe/Exchange as an option for e-mail account and syncing with those) or iPhone 3G activation/use. If you're gonna update to the 2.0 software or sync your iTunes with a 3G phone you'll need 7.7 first.

You're talking about the same people who had an almost 2 Gig developer SDK/OS update at WWDC and expected THOUSANDS of people to grab it over Wifi. From an IT perspective, Apple doesn't have its head on straight.

That is correct. 8.0 must be a massive change to the software and service because I can't imagine why they chose this version number unless they were expecting to release it a couple of days ago.

On the latest version of the 2.0 Beta, we've been seeing a new error when accessing the App Store for the past few weeks--"The App Store is not supported in this country." I expect when release is imminent, we'll know it by the store going up.

None of my so-called friends at an AT&T store will hold a phone for me in the morning. Supposedly, they're under strict termination policy that says they're not allowed to.

Fuck.

Yea we have them here now and we are not allowed to pre sell to staff/friends etc

Cant even open our demo one till midnite.

If my bluetooth would sync properly i would show u a picture of the boxes

So, if I plan on going to a mall kiosk AT&T store in suburban Chicago and getting there an hour before they open, will I be shit outta luck? That's all I can do on Friday, and I refuse to wait longer than an hour to spend close to $400.

Superblatt said:
The guy at the kiosk told me they'd have them last week. But, I don't see them listed on the site. Oh well, guess I'll be rolling the dice.

Most of the mall kiosk locations aren't actually AT&T corporate stores -- they're franchises owned by other companies. If they're not on the list, they're not going to have any. I would imagine just like last year, only corporately owned AT&T stores are getting the phones. So I'd find another option if I were you.

Yeah, that's been going about since WWDC.

Ok I got an issue with current iPhone...

Everytime I try to go to my visual voicemail it starts dialing voicemail. Also, when I look at the main screen on my phone up in the right top corner where the battery is, I see a new icon I never saw before. Its a phone with some buttons under it like a keypad. I assume that icon is somehow directly related to this visual voicemail issue..

If anyone knows what to do to get my vvm back I would appreciate it.

Thanks

For the icon thing: Settings -> Phone -> TTY (OFF) Dunno if this will fix your problem though.

I've had this happen very recently and I ended up having AT&T reset my voicemail account altogether. The messages are still all there, but what happens is that the all show up as unread.

Who do I need to call and what do I need to tell them?

Did you have to re-record your voicemail greeting?

When someone actually gets their hands on an iPhone 3G, I will be curious to hear whether the "improved audio quality" refers to the actual audio circuitry for music as well as to the internal speakers and phone call quality.

Nope, didn't have to record anything - but it took FOREVER to get someone from AT&T to reset it. They kept wanting to troubleshoot and all sorts of other stuff that obviously wouldn't work. You may have some issues this evening since they are all moving into launch mode - but yeah, call AT&T tech support, they will bounce you to Apple, who will bounce you back to AT&T.

Fuck.

If one of my friends asked me to do something that would risk my job I'd tell them where to "install" their SIM chip too.

I just got off the phone with apple.

they told me to do a FULL restore, which I did and when everything was done... It still was calling voicemail...

I think the key word I was trying to focus on was "Supposedly", I've not heard or seen anything that says they can get term'ed for holding stock.

That's the standard policy at most places for product launches like this. Same goes for most console launches at stores like Best Buy. Employees are not allowed to reserve or hold any for family/friends/employees unless they'd like to not work there anymore. Personally, I think that's a great policy. Get in line like everyone else. Or wait a month when the fervor's over, then I'm sure they could hold one for ya. Customer first, not 'friends and family.'

I've had that happen to me before, but usually after a reload/restore. I would just enter in my pin for voicemail, and after that first time it wouldn't do that anymore. It's like the Visual Voicemail had to 'set' itself.

iPhone App Store: 500 Apps at Launch, 25% Free

MacRumors said:
Jobs reveals that 500 applications will be launching on Thursday and that it is "the biggest launch" of his career. Apps will be available from MySpace, Facebook, AOL, eBay, SEGA and many more companies. One called Pandora allows you to create custom internet radio stations:

Pandora is already available on other phones from AT&T and Sprint, for a monthly fee. On the iPhone, it is free. That makes it "a credible alternative to broadcast (radio)," in part because iPhones can be plugged into car stereos, founder Tim Westergren says.
According to Jobs, at launch, 25% (~125) of the apps will be free while 90% of the remaining applications will be $9.99 or less. Meanwhile, New York Times has a similar article and pinpoints that one third (~166) of the apps will be games. A new site called TouchArcade.com is specifically covering iPhone and iPod touch gaming and has already covered some interesting possibilities.

I'll take AIM, the Facebook app, Twitterific, Monkey Ball... and maybe Pandora. I'd never heard of Pandora before. Dayaaaaawm.

Pac, you seem to have lost your avatar in the switch.

Okay, now the question is...what color? (Okay, I have a feeling choice may not factor in, but...)

Yes, that's 'cuz all of .Mac is down right now. Soon as it's back up my avatar should be working again.

My preference for color is the black 16GB. But, if they run out of black and still have white I may just go for that. I think the white looks pretty good too.

Australian iPhone will be AMAZING with Telstra. Look at all that data they're going to give us, we'll be fucking inundated with DATA..DATA...DAAAAAATTTTTTAAAAAAA

While still unofficial, Telstra plans, scanned from a shop staff training pack, have shown up at the Australian Mac user site MacTalk. The news, it seems, isn't good. In fact, for most non-business, non-high end customers they are just plain bad.

Details are still incomplete, but according to the Telstra only higher end plans come with enough data to be considered reasonable. For instance, a monthly spend of $89 nets you 200MB of included data, but stepping down to a $59 plan reduces that down to 80MB.

I do wish they'd fix the speaker. Motherfucker is awful for every purpose, including phone calls. I use the wired headset approximately all of the time.

It's weird that no one ever seems to namedrop the speaker as a problem. Not only is it not anywhere near loud enough, but the quality is horrible. My two-year-old brother uses it for music (he can't figure out headphones and they'd be dangerous anyway) and it sounds like distorted death at even the lowest audible volume, a problem I don't think is really that significant in comparable high-end phones. If I remember correctly, even my LG Chocolate from a couple years ago had significantly louder, clearer calls, and borderline usable music playback.

I mean, in a public place, using the speaker for a phone call just ain't happening. And the speakerphone feature is totally useless. I don't think I could hear that shit clearly in a damn library. Is this Apple's way of encouraging headset use, gimping one feature to encourage another? That'd be dumb.
