Wait, I use T-Mobile and my phone is currently jailbroken and unlocked.
Will upgrading now lock my phone again, obviously it wouldn't be jailbroken either but that's fine.

No. Just make sure the "Back up my data" or whatever checkbox is checked and sync your device before you perform the upgrade. iTunes will tell you when the last backup was successful on the status screen.

Then when the sync for the first time after installing the new firmware, it will ask if you want to restore your backup. Do this and all your settings/messages/sms/etc. will be restored.
Thanks much man!

One thing that Apple probably doesn't realize (or maybe they do) is that firmware 2.0 and the app store will keep most 1G iPhone users entirely satisfied with their iPhones for a while to come. The average user can probably live with the current data speed and no GPS for another year when the next revision of the iPhone is released.

Anyone with the Itunes remote know where you are supposed to enter the passcode displayed on my phone? It's plugged in, and it states to select my phone from the devices list. But that's it - I don't see where I can enter this 4-digit number.

This happens to me too. Apparently some box is supposed to pop up where you enter the PIN, but it doesn't work for me. The guy earlier said to check firewall or wireless router since it uses wifi, but I don't really know what I would check.

Describes me. Sure, Edge isn't blazing fast, but I'm not paying another $200 + $10/month extra for faster speeds and gimped GPS. The App Store is what matters, and we 1G iPhone users get it. I'll wait for iPhone 2.0 instead of iPhone 1.5.

That's my stance. I like to skip at least one generation when refreshing any of my tech, and with the 2.0 update I'm sure I'll be happy with my 1G phone (and the cheaper data plan) for quite a while.

I'm sure they're aware of it as a lot of the moves w/the 3G seem aimed at expanding the base among new users (businesses, price sensitive customers, etc) rather than drawing in existing iPhone users. I suspect the 3rd generation iPhone (3G?) will be aimed at luring in existing customers outside of the base.

Ok, do the following:

1. Startup iTunes on the machine you want to control remotely
2. On the iPhone, start the Remote app.
3. In the Remote app, select Add Library. The app will scan your wifi for computers with iTunes open. Select the desired library and the 4-digit code will appear on the phone.
4. On the computer, Look in the Library/Store/Shared/Playlist/etc. column on the left side of iTunes. You should see your iPhone's name with the Remote app to the left of it. Click on it and 4 blank spaces will appear in the main iTunes window. Enter the 4 digits and click Continue/OK. You should get a message indicating your phone can now remotely operate iTunes.

Nope, I get a four digit code but my iPhone and the remote app doesn't show up in iTunes.

Is your phone plugged into the computer? If so, try unplugging it first. When I connected mine to both libraries I have, my phone wasn't plugged in.

Not plugged in.

edit: Ah, I suppose it's because I disabled sharing my library. After I enabled sharing, it worked.

Anyone figured out what the dot replacing the "E" in the edge icon is supposed to be about?

dot.jpg

Since there is more then one person that has the Apple Remote problem.

First thing. State how you have your network setup.

I had mine as:

windows computer
internet-Router-{
wireless router--- iPhone

Because i set up my wireless router with DHCP it couldn't see the computer hooked up to the Router. In other words i had a network within a network that couldn't talk to each other.

So i just disable DHCP on the wireless and let the router handle all network stuff.

Another thing you can try is to make sure that the firewall set to allow both incoming and out going traffic for iTunes. You can turn off the firewall if you want.

I still have the 'E' icon, updated to 2.0 this morning. I'm in the office and not connected to any sort of WiFi.

Why wouldn't the realize it? By the same token, it's also a great way to build existing 1G iPhone owners desire for a fatter pipe. The more data hungry apps they have access to on the iPhone, the more likely they'll want the fastest service possible to support it all and they more likely they'll be able to justify the expense for it.

2.0 won't install on my iPhone and I had to restore twice just to get it working again I think some people should wait until apple has the update up later. Running Vista by the way

Hmm, you're the second vista user I know who can't get it to install.

So what apps is everybody downloading so far?

I got most of the free ones so far: (AIM, Box office, Evernote, Google, Jott, NY Times, Pandora, Remote, Weather Bug, Where, and Yelp)

Hey, it's a relatively beefy portable computer. Significantly more horsepower than the DS. I'm unsure how it compares to a PSP, though.

...Man, I downloaded a bunch of free apps from iTunes, but now I have to wait till tomorrow before I can pick up the phone and try everything out.

I gotta try Enigmo and Monkey Ball

MobileMe remains dead in the water for the moment. I was thinking that it is possible that perhaps they are fixing that Exchange sync data overwrite bug before they push this out into the wild and piss off a lot of people.

More powerful than the DS. People porting DS apps over shouldn't have many issues. The PSP, however, just has an overall architectural advantage over the deferred rendering architecture of the PowerVR lite - so don't expect things that are as visually complex from a 3D perspective.

Yeah MobileMe is up/down today. At first, it wasn't pushing anything to my device. Then, it started. Then stopped. Now I dunno what's going on. I can't check it over webmail to see and I'm not at home so I can't check via Mail.app.

Also it appears my employer has not done the steps necessary for me to get Exchange email over the iPhone. I put in all the correct info and it fails verification. Who knows when/if they'll get around to actually doing it. I'll shoot an email off to the IT dept but I have a feeling they may respond with something like "we don't want company email on a device we don't support." BUT I CAN CHECK WEBMAIL...!

Posted this in gaming, but it should probably be here too-

This is a screenshot I took with the 2.0 update, of me playing Super Monkey Ball, uploaded using the Mobile Flickr app.

2.0 am god, confirmed. We're all fucked when Peggle comes out.

That's exactly how I feel. Now that I've gotten to play around with 2.0 and the apps, all desire for the 3G phone has completely gone out the window. I want 3G speed, but I can definitely wait until they work out the bugs.
