i would join in the 2.0 goodness but i have to wait until tomorrow since i gave my gf my iphone while i use superior 3g 16gb white hotness :D

It seems like a bad design. I allowed AOL radio to use my location and it only asked 2 times. However when i say no to any App, they keep asking me if i want to use it. Twitterific does it every time i start it and Evernote does it every time i take a picture.

I just want to say always no to both those Apps but i can't.

New firmware is great. The ability to delete multiple e-mail messages is very welcome for me now. App Store is nice so far, although I've only played with it a bit. Downloaded the Net News Wire Client. Seems about the same as the web front end. Maybe a bit faster. Good stuff so far.

The Yellow Pages app doesn't seem to want to search for "Current Location" stuff. The "search" button just won't work. Lame. Kinda makes it...less useful.

The Facebook app still doesn't work.

The Urbanspoon app is a nice idea...but I dunno that it would work in practice. (It's kind of a crapshoot. You tell it where you are and what kind of food you want, then you "shake" the phone and it turns up a slot machine that'll give you a result. One result.)

Me.com push email doesn't appear to be working for me. And I dunno why, except that maybe I have to get it set up through iTunes. But it's definitely not doing it for me.

EDIT: Well after my phone crashed and restarted, push *is* working. Twasn't before.

Over Edge it was significantly slower for me than the web site is. Not to mention now I can't even get it to load (crashes on startup). Whoa, just had my whole phone crash and restart when I clicked on Twitterific.

SuperPac are there any free apps that are tricks and require you to become a paid member of a service?

Would be nice to see a recommended list from you also when there is multiple apps that do the same thing.

Also guys I'm swapping ot a 3G from a n95 tomorrow.

For prep I have itunes running with my Podcasts and Apps already downloaded.
My old phone has been synced and all my outlook contacts are updated to from my phone.

Will my iPhone on connection automatically pull my numbers over from Outlook on connection (nothing I can find in itunes)?

I have about 30Gb of music & video and 10Gb of photos do I need to keep my itunes library clear so they done all try and sync up to the iPhone on connection or can I add them all to my library tonight and just manually transfer them tomorrow with no risk of any mess?

(Also what do I do for photos just use the hard drive mode?)

Downloading the 2.0 firmware...

Saw this on the MacRumors forum:

You can take a screenshot of any screen on the iPhone by briefly holding the top button and the home button. The screen "blinks" for a second and then the image shows up in your camera roll.

Nice for documenting how to setup something!

Awesome if true.

When you have the iPhone docked and iTunes running, there will be set of configuration tabs for the iPhone synching that appear in iTunes. You can specify whether synching is manual or automatic when you dock, specify what you synch contacts with (Outlook is an option on PC iTunes) and specify what from your music/video library gets synched based on playlists/folders.

Thanks, last time I synced a new iPod I got into a right pickle with it trying to auto sync everything, nice to know I get the now on connection.

Right guess im in for a night of moving all my stuff over to iTunes again.

Anyone with an iPod Touch been able to get the new firmware?

Not yet apparently. The iPod Touch firmware has to be paid for unlike the iPhone firmware. My guess is that they'll put the Touch firmware up later today.

So, I have 188 megs of "other" sitting on my once-jailbroken iphone. Is there any way to get rid of it? Or is this normal for all iphones?

I have the same amount right now on my iPod touch. I guess that is normal.

Almost 4 hours wasted now still trying to figure this shit out. Ughhhh

Apple Mobile Device Support won't fucking reinstall so I guess my only choice is a system recovery.

so why the fuck did itunes just let me pay £20 for several apps when I can't do anythign with them? It knows I have an ipod touch paired with this computer.

fucking arse shit bollocks.

and I haven't seen anything about having to pay for new firmware. if they want me to pay so I can run software I've already paid for once, they can fuck off. Don't see why they'd charge when it opens them up to the app store which is a revenue stream.

Their excuse is accounting related, although I don't know why they have to charge that much. Regardless, their rationale is that iPhone users are paying monthly, so they get free updates, while touch users aren't paying all the time, so they get paid updates.

Not condoning it btw, just what I've come to understand.

You also should've already known this, being a touch owner. The last firmware released was a pay firmware as well.

I did the same, I downloaded apps before I actually had installed the firmware on the phone. But I hadn't downloaded any that were pay. That's, uh, your fault. :)

If you're a Touch owner, you will have to pay, yes. I believe that was stated at WWDC.

I know the first update was paid for, and I didn't mind that, as I got mail and other stuff that was worth it. What is this update bringing, apart from the ability for me to pay apple money for apps?

The same reason you've had to pay for all the other firmware updates for the iPod Touch - the GAAP requires them to account for that and regulatory procedures make them charge you for it.

Kotaku have put up a great run down of some of the iPhone games here:

Are there any demos available for the iPhone games?

Above with the YouTube videos and previews are the best so far. No demos from what I can see but some apps have basic free & trial versions and then paid full versions shown seperatly you would think demos wouldn't be a problem, unless Apple are discouraging them for to save bandwidth cost or to not avoid cluttering the App Store?

Any indication which twitter app is better yet?

Installed Twittelator. I like it. It seems to cache the images so it's not having the problem that Twitterific did. The interface is simple, there's no ad and the app is free. I'll have to toy around more with Twitterific later but Twittelator is a good, free alternative. Also, you can add a map of your current location to your posts. Which I did on my Twitter a few mins ago -- you can see it here.

BTW, I started the morning with a full battery. All the downloading of apps and using them I've been doing has whittled my battery down to 1/3rd left. Ow.

The AP news application is very good and has strong ties to the video and pictures that people have come to expect from AP.

Sadly one of the games I would absolutely recommend (Song Summoner by Square Enix) is currently not available for the iPhone. The game is genius and innovative.

I bought this when it hit on Tuesday and I have to agree. It's especially interesting since it's targeted at the older iPods, but plays great anyway. Hopefully it opens the doors to more games of this nature.

I've been hearing great things about this game and have been considering picking it up for my iPod. Sounds really nice.

Finally, I can browse the app store!

Man it's a bit overwhelming that there's so much to look through and no idea what most things are or if they're any good. What blows my mind is what some apps are charging though. Like I saw one for BART which is a transit system in the bay area and they wanted $15 for it. The first thought that came to mind is, why wouldn't I just go to their website instead through the iPhone? I'm not sure what they're thinking unless they're aiming at just iTouch users. But for an iPhone user it boggles the mind.

$15?? WTF. Especially since Transit 511 is supposed to be working on a mobile app in the next year.

I haven't used the App Store at all but does it have any rating functionality? That'd be one of the first things they should add if it doesn't, ala the user ratings of items on the ITMS.

Okay here are my Super Monkey Ball impressions:

It's great! The graphics are very impressive. The 3D is silky smooth and the textures are very high quality. The sounds and music are directly on par with the console versions.

The controls take about 10 minutes to get used to. What you realize is that there is a proper way to hold the iPhone in order to play well. Once your hands and mind adjust to this position, you'll find yourself moving from frustration to satisfaction as you get the hang of it. By this point, muscle memory kicks in and you get better and better.

I beat the first world without having to continue. I did die, quite a bit, however the game dolls out one ups like crazy so you never feel like you're getting cheated.

I highly recommend the game as long as you have the patience to let your hands learn the proper motions. Once you do, the game is great fun.

Will upgrading to 2.0 really erase all my contacts/messages/settings?
No. Just make sure the "Back up my data" or whatever checkbox is checked and sync your device before you perform the upgrade. iTunes will tell you when the last backup was successful on the status screen.

Then when the sync for the first time after installing the new firmware, it will ask if you want to restore your backup. Do this and all your settings/messages/sms/etc. will be restored.

Holy crap at Alarm Free app :lol "Alarm is a self-defense/emergency alarm with a freefall detector"

I must download this now.

Yes it does. Ratings and review information are displayed on the product page.
