iPhone is out ages ago...

What?

I downloaded some version of 2.0 from a link earlier in this thread... but it asks for some password when I try to open the .dmg file. I don't really know what I am doing. Could someone please quickly explain what I need to do to update my iPhone?

Are you using safari by any chance?

Yeah.

And Soze... that link is dead.
I had the same problem when downloading the file using Safari. What happens is that Safari automatically unzips the firmware file and creates a folder. What you need to do is look in your trash and look for a file called iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw.zip. Now just move it out the trash and change the extension so its just .ipsw. After that just connect your phone and hold the option key and click update to find the new file.

Hrm. How does the iTunes integration work...is it tied into the phone operation or could I possibly switch or access multiple iTunes accounts? It would be great if my american account would work...

I click update in iTunes and it says 1.1.4 is the latest version.

The update for the iPhone can be downloaded manually and installed manually. It'll likely hit iTunes, along with an iPod Touch version tomorrow.

The latter is probably the cleaner, easier way to do it. But I know suggesting such things is kind of heresy around here. :)

HOLzy FUCKING SHIT FUCKING REMOTE IS THE BEST FUCKING THING I HAVE EVR WITHNESS IN THE HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY.

I AMGOING TRO GET WASTED AND LISTEN TO MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!!

Well since I won't be able to upgrade to an iPhone, I'm buying an iPhone 1.0 from a co-worker. I've got a couple of questions:

- Is it easy to put in my SIM card? Will it recognize my SIM account or is every unit's activated account the only one recognized?

- Do I need the iPhone to be unlocked to be able to switch SIMs? Do I even need to unlock with Firmware 2.0 coming out?

If you're already on AT&T you're half way there.

GuitarToolkit is fucking awesome. It's a chromatic tuner using the microphone! It has pre-selections for the standard tuning and several alternate tunings, or if you prefer you can just strum a note and the display will show you which half-step you're closest too (and how many cents you're sharp or flat) with an analog needle display. It also has a built-in chord chart showing the most common fingerings for something like 260 chords. AND it has a metronome!

Monkey ball is cool, works great on the iPhone's tilt functionality. The download was 35MB but after installation it bloated up to some 100MB.

This seriously made me so happy to own an iphone even though I was already fucking happy with it. The Remote alone is just amazing in my circumstance. Now my friends and I can totally get baked/drunk while chilling out by the fire pit and I won't have to fucking move to change the music... decrease the volume (incase cops come)... or turn off music if I am about to pass out.

The fact that it loads everything so fast and works so flawlessly just makes me want to be an apple whore for life. Thank you steve jobs and whoever created this gem of an application.

Can I walk into an Apple store tomorrow at 1:00 PM and buy this thing? Is it going to be something that sells out or takes hours of waiting in line?

Yes remote is awesome

It's really awesome with appletv because now I can search for a artist instead of scrolling through a massive list.

@Jazzy: 99.9% sure it will be pushed out tomorrow in iTunes.

@Talka: Most likely if you're in the states. it should be in plentiful supply. no promises, though. :)

For some of us it technically is tomorrow. :) Just sayin', that's all. The computer I normally use for syncing is otherwise tied up anyway, so it's no huge deal.

oh yeah. well, i guess it's "tomorrow" for me as well, technically.

Anyway, Apple is not going to update the 2.0 firmware file between now and tomorrow. Downloading the file from Apple's servers and installing it manually should be A-OK for anyone waiting for iTunes.

My fucking iPhone broke so I went down first thing to get a 3G one, the store opening was delayed 25 mins due to "system problems" and then it turned out they had no 16gbs, all sold online to new customers.

O2 completely ruined the UK launch. I won't have a phone for like a month now..

nice job O2. I suppose they were at least smart enough for one of their large London stores to have lots of stock for press photos/news reports?

16gb iPhone get.

Went to the smallest most out of the way o2 shop in the area, there was a que and only 11 iPhones with 3 16gbs' Got the last one. Epic system probs in shop so manager just did it all on paper.

:D syncing now :D :D :D

I drove by the local AT&T store. At 3:35am local time there were 5 people in line. I don't want to know what the Apple store in Houston looks like.

How does remote work? I want to use it to adjust my itunes settings on my PC. When I hit "Add Library" I see a 4 digit random number. The screen says "To control iTunes, open iTunes and select iPhone from the Devices list, but it's not there. What am I supposed to do with the passcode number?

Hehe, 8Gb iPhone get! The store had a line 50 deep, me and my friend were numbers 10 and 11 (we got there about 6:30am.) so we got split up as they only let 10 in at a time. Then the computers went down so they had to do everything manually. By the time I joined my friend in the store the lady announced they'd sold all 16Gb ones, and a girl in front of us made a big fuss and stormed out in an inconceivable rage!
We just shrugged and figured we'd just saved £60! Besides, there'll be a 32Gb by Christmas.
Anyway, it's nice and glossy and charging up as I type. It should be ready to go by this afternoon providing the people at the store can get onto their system.

hey, on att, if you change from one family plan to a lower minute family plan do your rollover minutes get taken away too?

i have 14,000 rollover minutes :lol

Now syncing :)

But damn, normally my town never lines up for anything (at least not consoles), but arriving 30 minutes before the store opened and being 22nd in line (of about 50 total) I already had to settle for a white one...

Edit: Is mobileMe not yet working? I was offered a 60-day trial through iTunes which redirected me to the mobileMe website, but said trial is nowhere to be found.

Hey, how hard is it to port your number off a family plan from a different carrier? My contract is up with US Cellular, and I'm going for my iPhone.

If people so badly want the touch update, then why not get it from one of the many download links that are popping up?

You could always buy something else of the store afterwards if you feel so bad about not giving Apple your $10

because those are only for the iphone?

also reading the macrumors thread it seems to have bricked several peoples iphones and left them unable to restore

No, one has been made available for the Touch for the past 6 hours on torrents, rapidshare and some blogs

It's impossible for it to be the reason the Touch / iphone bricked as the download is excalty the same as the one Apple will be putting up in a few hours

From what I've read it's only bricking the occasional jailbroken iPhone.

Also, there's a lot of confusion over whether any of the links floating around are for the iPod Touch as well, and to be honest I'll eat the $10. It's a small price to pay to not have to deal with torrents.

how will the iphone work with my existing non iphone family plan?

"FamilyTalk Nation 1400 Rollover & Unlimited Night/Weekend & Unlimited Mobile-To-Mobile Minutes MONTHLY COST: $80.00 "

oh i didnt know the touch one had been found

i would expect they probably are the ones being released but i wouldnt want to risk it with a $500 phone..
